Exorcist II: The Heretic 1977

I've rarely seen such a glaring drop in quality from a film to a direct sequel as in "Exorcist II". In this misguided sequel to William Friedkin's masterpiece, everything is worse: the effects are lousy, the actors bad, the music super annoying, and the script thin. Furthermore, Friedkin is also clearly missing from the director's chair, as his successor, John Boorman, can't even begin to hold a candle to him. I also feel sorry for Linda Blair, who was fantastic in the first part but is just as awful here as the rest of the cast. Annoying sound effects and a plot that is a real snoozefest do the rest to make "Exorcist II: The Heretic" a truly exhausting movie experience.

I've actually owned a DVD copy of this for decades but had never watched it based on its poor reputation...until now. Turns out, I should have left it on the shelf. This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I'm just not going to talk about it.

Very very bad. Acting of many is horrible and atmosphere is completely gone from previous one. And there are so many things wrong with this. - 2/10

This is tragically bad. It is a mystery how a top, classic horror film that most of older fans cut our teeth on (The Exorcist) could have spawned a sequel this awful. It isn't even scary just a weird plot combined with terrible special effects.

Skip this in your rewatch and go straight to The Exorcist III from The Exorcist.

I was so happy to find out that they decided to act like this movie doesn't exist and make The Exorcist III as a direct sequel.

Every time it almost does something good it takes two steps backwards into bullshit. I hate this fucking movie and I hate the fact that I hate it.

If there ever was a sequel that didn’t understand the original, its Exorcist II: The Heretic. When a priest is assigned to investigate the death of Father Merrin, who died during an exorcism, he visits the girl who was possessed and enters her subconscious where he’s confronted by the demon Pazuzu and learns of a holy man that can defeat the demon. Linda Blair and Max von Sydow return and are joined by Louise Fletcher and James Earl Jones. But the script is garbage and makes no damned sense. And the sets look incredibly cheap. Yet the film’s greatest sin is that there’s nothing even remotely scary about it. Exorcist II: The Heretic is a poorly made film that’s nothing like the original.

According to some people on the internet, there seems to be a rather exotic category (somewhat improbable too) known as "so bad it's good". Well, this is a "so bad it's horrible" one. Not one hundredth of the power of the Friedkin film is to be found here. It's boring and lame for the most part. What's really amazing is that they got Richard Burton, Max Von Sydow and James Earl Jones in the cast only to make a huge pile of crap out of it, and with no less than John Boorman at the helm!

One more for the hall of infamy of the worst films ever made, certainly a very strong contender for one of the most deplorable sequels ever. It's so bad it'll be banned from Tavaresflix.

It maintains some virtues of the first part.
