Eve's Bayou 1997

Catching up before it's leaving Shudder. This film is incredible and I am so glad I finally watched it. Eve's Bayou a really solid gothic drama that isn't too annoyingly melodramatic. Just in the right amount combined with some silly voodoo actions. It dives into the scariness of human nature through the eyes of a child. It also tackles childhood trauma and I'm impressed by the storytelling techniques, how the story is told delicately in a beautiful location, examining the conflict of familial relationships with some striking collection of imagery and great dynamics between the characters. I love every second of it and the mystery aspect is very intriguing. This film has some of the best child performances I’ve ever seen. Jurnee Smollett really elevates the story. The bond between two sisters is really wonderful. Can't recommend it enough!
