The camerawork makes you feel like you're on patrol with the main characters. Great mix of drama and realistic action.
A movie version of Southland! (the tv show).
A realistic good movie with exceptional directing which was succesfull by the end and heartbreaking last 20 minutes..Also great chemistry between Jake and Michael they were great both!
This film is intense, beautiful camera work, schocking, rough when needed... it's just one of the best movies I've seen in years!
great movie. Intense & funny filled with action!
Yay 4 Trakt! That last comment completely ruined the movie for me and it's no point even seeing it now. The staff really need to do something about the broken spoiler-function. It's the third time this shit happens for me!
Great movie, good ending. Sad!
Thankfully this is just a movie and these types of events that take place are very rare.
enjoyed everybit of it,and that end though wouf. EXCELLENT!
Finally got the damn thing on blu ray, still one of the best films I've ever seen
@war59312 what i wanted to say is this: at first it looks like they are both dead. that would be a great ending. but letting one survive felt very unlikely to me and didn't fit the rest of the movie because it aims to portray the protagonists as human as possible.
@xandy He did not die. Was that a typo? Since a second later you mention only hurting his hand.
Have to use your imagination I guess. The funeral would be weeks later so he would be out of the hospital by then.
Or the funeral would have been delayed of course if not. After all they are not just partners but best friends.
This is a really great movie, with some disturbing imagery. David Ayer wanted to capture the everyday life of police officers in one of the most criminal districts: South Central Los Angeles, in a way that hadn't been done before; of course there are many movies that play in South Central Los Angeles, such as Colors, Boyz N the Hood, South Central, or Training Day, and especially compared to Colors you can find a number of similarities. Still, Ayer makes good on his promise: Similar to Colors we get a movie that in the first half seems totally random, we follow two around two cops, experiencing a lot of ugly stuff and soon some of these events lead to bigger events that unfold dramatically.
Different to Colors, however, Ayer focuses on the two cops. These are both young and in the beginning of their careers, and as two young guys their heads are full of shit, while their hearts are still in the right place. Even though being highly trained and professional when it comes to the job, they fool around a lot, and often just push their damn luck. They seem different at the beginning, yet they call each other brothers and you soon get to know why: Being in a car with each other nearly 8hrs a day makes for a really special friendship. In the Interviews Peña says that a third of the movie plays in the car, and I don't feel like that's an over-exaggeration. What's also interesting about this movie is, that for probably half of the movie "found footage" like shots where used. Gyllenhaals character "Brian Taylor" is filming his everyday for a class project, and both carries a camcorder with him as well as having his partner and himself wearing body cams on their shirts. Besides we often also get "ego perspective", especially when they move in somewhere with weapons drawn. Other great "found footage" like shots include cameras mounted on long weapons filming towards the actors, dashbord cams, etc.
These are however mixed with real camera work, and different to most found footage horror movies they are not used as long single shots, but all these different approaches are edited together to form great scenes. The pacing switches from slow scenes that are mostly driven by dialogue or off-duty scenes that seem mundane (e.g. the day that Brian has off with his girlfriend and has a special date planned from which we only get to see the drive with both of them singing to music playing on the radio), but that in their very special ways convey so much emotions, that makes you really love all of these characters, with all their quirks and idiosyncrasies. In contrast we get these highly thrilling on-duty scenes that are either packed with suspense or with fast pace action. Acting-wise we get a number of high ranking actors such as Anna Kendrick, Maurice Compte, Frank Grillo or David Harbour who just play small supporting roles with minimal screen time. The main focus lies on Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña, and both are so good and excellent in their roles that you cannot imagine this movie with any other actor in their place.
So all in all this is a shocking movie with a - to me - really unexpected ending that shocked me. However, I found it could have had an even deeper impact if the ending was slightly different, and I would have loved it if it wasn't for the last scene.
it's a great movie I didn't expect me to like it ,
but the ending not so much,,, I really wanted them to die together
It's amazing what liberties they had to take, and lies they had to tell, in order to make a bunch of mutt cops appear to be human. They don't give a fuck about anyone except for themselves, and they are more dangerous than any gangbanger on any street anywhere in the world.
Crank ahh camera movement type
8 years since I last saw this whaaaat.
It was a little bit better in my memory but I think it's a very good movie. Jake Gyllenhaal is amazing, I like the documentary style of it and it has fun, tense and emotional moments.
So whilst I wasn't as captivated as 8 years ago, I still think this is a fun movie and I hope next time around I can bump this back to 4,5 stars.
"Comfortable footwear. Policing is all about comfortable footwear."
This is my favorite Ayer movie by far. It is dirty, raw and feels real. What elevates the story despite how people feel about cops are the performances by Jake and Michael. I want to be their friends. I first watched this in theaters alone and I had to quietly wipe away a few tears.
Dude, I was not crying, I was just dicing some onions while watching this movie, that's all.
Complete garbage. I just don't see how everybody finds this entertaining.
Let me be honest, I went into this film wanting to hate it due to everything that is happening with the police in America at the moment with the current situations with the BLM protests but also in general. But lemme tell you now if you are like me and are not a big fan of the police, do not write this film off as this is one of the best films I have ever seen in regards to the police and I will be recommending it to anyone.
Every single cast member acts amazingly in this film with both Michael Pena (Mike Zavala) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Brian Taylor) giving some of their career-best performances as their portrayal of these two young cops with young families felt super realistic and though you only get to see a little bit of their personal life it is enough to make you care about these characters, it also doesn't portray the police as angels or even heroes as it does show that they have got a good side and bad side throughout the film with me in the first few moments of the film wanting to turn it off because of how unlikable they came off but please keep watching as these two actors perfectly build these characters. Also, really need to give a shoutout to both Frank Grillo (Sarge) who really need to be in better films because he is an awesome actor and he is great in this, but also David Harbour (Van Hauser) who portrays the cop that you can tell probably started off like the main characters but has had so much s**t happen to him in the LAPD that he is just done with everything and it felt believable.
As for the action, it really is top-notch as you feel the intensity throughout each if those scenes and I'd say its unique filming style is the reason I found the action so unique. David Ayer is a director who can be really hit or miss with Fury being a giant hit and The Tax Collector being one of the worst films I have seen, but this definitely shows me that this guy is a great director and a great writer who just needs a good subject to be involved with as I will say that anyone who likes Training Day (written by David Ayer) will love this film and dare I say it this film has a lot more emotion than that but not as good.
Definitely recommend this one to everyone as it is a future classic and I understand the topic of Police at the moment is a very sensitive (rightfully so) subject, but this is one of the most realistic depictions of Police I have ever seen in a film.
This is just pure nonsense cop-a-ganda. It's the Pearl Harbor of cop movies. It's a long Pena and Gyllenhaal bromance, where they constantly espouse their love for one another in hushed tones. It's a long line of giant busts for 2 patrol cops that could be movies of their own (crackheads with babies taped up on the closet, rich cartel cowboy pull overs, cartel mass graveyards, and on and on and on with the heroes easily dispensing of the villains and moving on to the next huge bust that comes from "checking out that scene again" or "a random welfare check". Not to mention the cartoonish Mexican gangster arch villains who stab people in the eye with kitchen knives (the victim talked his way through this entire thing by the way, with a knife in his head) that mostly just scream that they have no fear and have names like "Big Evil". This is some of the most sanctimonious trite ever put to screen. Completely shocking that this is by the same person who made a film as good and real and raw as Training Day.
EDIT: I forgot the fore-shadowing. At Gyllenhaal's wedding, there's a guy who looks like an old version of him, talking about how his partner took a bullet that was meant for him even though his buddy was great and he was just a piece of sh*t. This, after spending whole movie calling Pena great and "aw shucks" calling Gyllenhaal a piece of sh*t, even as soon as the next scene. Boy, I wonder how the movie is going to end...
A compelling and well-crafted crime thriller, End of Watch is an entertaining and powerful film. The story follows two LAPD officers as they patrol the streets of South Central Los Angeles and run afoul of a Mexican cartel. The directing style is rather unusual, and integrates various found footage sources. At times this becomes a bit contrived, but overall it does an excellent job at engaging the audience. Additionally, the cast is really good, and includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, and Anna Kendrick; who all give strong performances. There are some pacing and storytelling issues, yet despite a few weaknesses End of Watch is an impressive character drama about those who make up the thin blue line.
One of the few movies that have brought tears to my eyes. Very well done.
I am not a Jake Gyllenhaal fan but I loved this movie. It’s very realistic, funny, gritty , heartbreaking. It’s full of action and violence you will be on the edge of your seat the whole time.
A pseudo cop documentary, seen mostly from the body cams and handheld cam of the officers.
Hard to watch. Not because of the camera, but because of the content.
I really liked End of Watch. Gyllenhaal and Pena both fit the roles very well, and made for a crime drama/thriller that was easy to connect to without having ever been in law enforcement.
The pacing of the movie, and the story arc were excellent. I felt myself tensing up throughout, and never felt like the movie was dragging.
Would definitely recommend checking this out, but don't expect a happy go lucky movie.
End of Watch doesn't have much of a concept but to depict the credible lives of these hero cops. While the lead stars shine on their beautiful down-to-earth bromance, there's a grim reality about to affect their lives thus makes this an indeed so compelling film. Still, it could have been a Crank like film than a found-footage. The crazy cam is a great effect, but not the characters holding the camera. Aside from that, it's a top notch thriller that is easy enough to enjoy. Worth a ride and recommended.
full of surprise till end
Just let me explain one thing, before someone is getting pissed:
I WILL NOT SPOIL THE ENDING. I just say, that there is an alternate ending. If you want to know it, here is a Link to an Interview with Screenwriter David Ayer.

In the end a great Movie, 7/10
İ like this movie.
While the movie itself is enjoyable, it took me a good 30 minutes to "get into it". The dialogue is a bit too bro heavy and their camera POV didn't really work for me. Both them and the gangsters use the camera in moments where it didn't make much sense so it was more an excuse for some diffrent angles than anything else. The scene in the hospital was maybe the most annoying thing in this regard - took me completely out of it. The movie suffers from major plot armor aswell. If you're looking for some no-brainer entertainment sure go with it, it's certainly nothing more..
Just as you thought lost footage type of movies had run out of steam, here comes a high budget, highly polished production. A buddy cop movie with some excellent dialogue and intense scenes. Recommended.
one of the best movies of 2012
If you seen movies like "Training Day" and the 80's film "Colors" then "End Of Watch" is definately a movie you have to check out. The film takes a very simple storyline that has been done over and over from TV-Shows to short films, and turns it into a funny and dramatic film that really gains the respect of any movie fanatic. The great chemistry between Jake Gyllenhal and Michael Pena makes "End Of Watch" a realistic and personal story that really drags the viewer into the characters. The camera work and documentary style that makes this film original might turn off some people from the very beginning..but if you can get past those details "End Of Watch" can actually be an entertaining and enjoyable film that I can definately recommend if you got nothing to see.
spoiler alert:
both dead. great ending. but wait, he only hurt his hand. wtf? the ending totally ruined the movie for me.
however i love the camera work and storytelling
someone really needs to edit @tivos comment, as if you post that you fuckwit! glad I watched it first before reading that.
anyway good film, well worth a watch for fans of training day and similar.
thug life. interesting street-police drama.
This was the best movie that I have seen in a long time! The flow and ebb of the story was beautiful. I would love to see a sequel to this although that might be touch being that Michael Pena's character was killed in the ambush! I am so glad that those loser cartel gang members got theirs soon there after!

Excellent movie, my one complaint though is, their watch should have ended together
