Just got back from the world premiere. It's a lot of fun and thoroughly entertaining. Classic Marvel humor and tone, amazing visuals, Benedict Cucumber is stellar, but there are a few story flaws and the MCU is really starting to feel formulaic (I'm probably just suffering from franchise burnout).
People are already giving low rates..I think this movie looks great.
typical marvel origin story for doctor stranges first solo outing, but an enjoyable one nonetheless. the special effects are by far the best thing about the whole movie, and marvel are to be commended for the outstanding work they did.
Cumberbatch is excellent as Strange, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Marvel made an excellent choice when they picked him to play the part, and Tilda Swinton is also good as the Ancient One, despite the fact they changed genders for the role.
the only let down for me, was Mads Mikkelsen's villain character, who suffers from the same thing that a lot of marvel studios villains seem to suffer from, namely being boring and one dimensional. Dormammu is built up the entire movie as a major world destroying threat, but gets maybe 10 mins screen time at best, and is defeated far too easily.
overall, a good movie which you should see as soon as you can, but don't make the same mistake that a lot of people did at the screening i went to and walk out as soon as the credits start to roll. you will miss the mid and end credits scenes which most Marvel movies have now.
Gets better every watch which is the opposite of most Marvel movies, the ancient one sees right through me
Unlike most Marvel movies, the interactions between characters were actually memorable. When Strange scoffs at the ancient one's chakra "nonsense" she kicks him out of his body. It's an awesome "welcome to the Matrix"-style intro to a mystical world. This movie is The Matrix plus Inception + the Marvel universe in the best possible way. This introduction to the multiverse sets the tone of the movie, and it carries through to the very end.
The special effects were phenomenal. The CGI sequences were more interesting in a visual sense and more artistic than most recent Marvel CGI scenes. It's nice to see something besides exploding buildings/spaceships/robots. The introduction to the multiverse was the most striking sequence. The universe made out of hands and his transition through a portal formed from his own retina were merely highlights of this delightful montage. Fight scenes were well choreographed, especially when focused around the folding world.
The hero characters were all interesting. The ancient one is dealing with the devil to try to help the human race. The baron feels conflicted about the means used to protect the planet. The likeable Dr. Strange goes through a pretty major transition from narcissist to hero. On the opposing side, the enemies were generic. Mads & co were from the common "we want power from the evil thing that destroys everything it touches, but it won't hurt us!" variety.
My favorite character was the cape! It had so much personality, and its scenes were a nice mixture of comedy and practicality.
I hope the Thor+Strange crossover feels more like this than any of the Thor movies.
Overall, this was quite entertaining and solid addition to the Marvel universe.
I love that Marvel has created an expectation across all ages and types of movie lovers that even after and during the credits there is more to be seen. No one moved a muscle until it was all said and done, neither should you either if you haven't seen this film.
Doctor Strange brings perfect casting (even to those characters many doubted fit), mind bending visuals that leave you stunned, but sadly with another good villain but without the punch to make it a great, but who did serve his purpose of bringing us the Doctor Strange. One of my favorite introduction films in the MCU and i can't wait for a second viewing.
I want a POP! dedicated to the Cloak of Levitation.
Yes, it's formulaic. But I loved every other aspect of this movie. I may be a little biased as Doctor Strange has been my favourite superhero since I was a kid, but I absolutely loved this movie. I think Benedict Cumberbatch was a perfect casting choice, along with these being some of the best visuals I've ever seen in a movie (especially in the MCU). Loved it!
Nothing more that a good movie overall. The villain was weak and I would have liked this to be a Marvel movie that isn't all about delivering one-liners. All of the Marvel characters have to be funny and snarky. It's gotten old.
The alternate dimension scenes that Doctor Strange travels through courtesy of the "Ancient One" are absolutely breathtaking and also very odd. I would have loved to see more of those visuals in this movie. Also, the confrontation between Doctor Strange and super villain Dormammu was brilliant.
A good movie with great visuals that I wish Marvel could allow to stand on it's own without everyone being a stand-up comedian.
Wonder if Sapkowski borrow The Witcher spells from Doctor Strange… they looked similar. ;)
Much like everyone else I found the visuals to be outstanding but beyond that the story didn't do too much for me. I struggled with Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and found his portrayal of the character to be completely unlikable. On a positive note I felt Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton were both great in their roles.
Well, the effects are certainly nice. And Chitwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Wong steal the film. But that's not very hard to do. Cumberbatch is the same role he's always played with the added wrinkles of Dr. House and, of course, Tony Stark, repeating that formula to a T. But for better or worse, RDJ embodied that formula and codified it. Cumberbatch is never comfortable with it, his comedic timing stilted and lifeless, and so he exposes the vapidness of the quips. His dramatic acting is hardly better;the American accent is probably taking too much out of him. And Tilda Swinton, my god. The movie takes so much pride in the woke swerve of 'Ha ha! Strange thought the Ancient One was an Asian man! Isn't it Girlboss how we whitewashed this role? It's not stereotypical if it's a white girl spouting the same old mystical cliches! Don't worry about the appropriation of aesthetics!'
And the moral of this movie is. Something. Strange can't go back to being a nuerosurgeon with the lessons he's learned and focus on helping people instead of glory. No, that would be selfish. There are other, bigger, better ways of helping people. Meaning being a Marvel hero, crushing radicals and ensuring the status quo stays intact. He has a crisis of conscience about killing someone because he swore the Hippocratic Oath, and another character calls him a spineless coward for it. But not to worry; he sentences people to an eternity of torment instead, as if this is some sort of compromise. Yes, the Dormammu climax is a fun subversion of the usual big boss fight at the end of these movies, but that hardly matters when the rest of it reinforces the tropes so heavily.
And even the effects... yes, they are impressive. But there's a sort of pretension to them. They are thrown at you with no meaning or thought beyond trying to impress. They quickly become repetitive, thinking more physical layers means more creativity. Much of it is derivative, from the flashing lights of 2001: A Space Odyessy to the environmental warping of Satoshi Kon's Paprika. And the only ones displayed with any meaning are, pardon the pun, heavy-handed. Strange misses his hands... so let's have him swarmed by hands... and have his finger become hands...
There's potential here, but it's like that potential is searched out by and purposely snuffed by the formulaic trappings these films demand. Here's hoping Sam Rami can make something truly inspired of this.
I'm going to be brief and dismissive because it's Marvel trash, and particularly forgettable Marvel trash, yet one they keep milking due to the lead actor's ability to take the character comically seriously while having a deep voice.
The character is cringe, the film is self-indulgent, and they did a double white-wash of two main characters, and the Asian guy is a silly comic sidekick. This, just a couple of years before they go full-on super woke pander mode. The emperor has no clothes, Di$$$ney is a joke, as is every single one of its trash adapted properties.
The worst of the Marvel movies.
The word Strange is in the title.
Doctor Strange has a remarkably safe plot given the source materiel, although that can all be forgiven given how amazing the visual effects are. This is a very entertaining film mainly for the creative and ingenious uses of special effects. This film can drag a bit but it is worth it to see something that gives the end of 2001 a run for its money.
Marvel has really run off the rails lately. This is awful.
Doctor Strange pretty much follows the standard model for introducing Marvel superheroes - our central hero is a bit of a prick and self-centred who undergoes a physical crisis leading to his eventual rebirth as a gifted hero who is prepared to sacrifice himself for the good of humanity. Cue montage shots of training and valuable lessons for the central characters on what it takes to be a “hero” as well as an introduction to the audience on the “rules” of the world and the powers presented that are both inherently ridiculous but just about work within the story due to strong casting. End with an effect-heavy finale that forces our hero to take on the villain whose qualities and motivation are often a reminder to the hero of a path best avoided. If that sounds a bit cynical, it probably is and yet the regardless of the paint-by-numbers plotting and character development, it is largely entertaining and doesn’t outstay its welcome. Perhaps future instalments will provide more interesting developments.
Prime example of a movie that should be seen on the big screen in a cinema. The visuals are breathtakingly stunning.
I wasn't too optimistic about seeing this since I'm not really a fan of him, but ol' Bendysticks Cabbagepatch did alright.
As with most Marvel movies these days, I struggled to give much of a fuck. Doctor Strange is well made and looks great, but there is little depth past what you see right in front of you. With more engaging writing, this could have been brilliant.
Mister Doctor. Best dialogue of the film.
Of course Doctor Strange is a Beyoncé fan. LOL He's awesome.
I enjoy this movie. Loved to see Thor (Even if it is just a minute)
Mordo... you were such nice guy.
best marvel solo movie ever ♥¤♡
THE WACPINE OF 'DOCTOR STRANGE'

CHARACTERS: 8

The Good:
Right when the MCU started feeling formulaic and predictable, Marvel Studios dropped Doctor Strange; a film introducing mystical and magical elements to the MCU and offering a trippy and inventive superhero flick, once again reinvigorating the genre.
Benedict Cumberbatch is such a great choice to play the arrogant doctor Stephen Strange that no one else could do it as well as he does. And while Tilda Swinton's Ancient One might not be completely comic accurate, I like her take on the character. She brings much-needed diversity to the cast.
The rest of the cast is great as well. Mad Mikkelsen always plays a villain well, while Benedict Wong has surprisingly sharp comedic timing.
The single greatest thing about this film is the visuals. They're trippy, colourful and multi-dimensional, like the best LSD trip ever. Some of the visual trickery, done with a combination of cinematography, editing and visual effects, is truly wonderful.
The visual style also allows for some genuinely inventive and original action sequences. Despite the heavy use of CGI to create this fantastical fight scenes, they don't come across as artificial.
Strange's cloak is the best supporting character ever. I want a spin-off animated series featuring the Cloak and the Flying Carpet from Aladdin. Greatest love story ever.
The Bad:
Despite all the multi-dimensional and mysterious elements, the script mostly flows like a typical superhero origin story, at least throughout its first half, before turning into a stretched out LSD trip for its second hour.
The Ugly:
Keep your eyes on the road, kids!
WACPINE RATING: 7.15 / 10: 3,5 stars
A strangely great movie
Somehow I just can’t get enough of this movie, although it is similar to Inception, a movie which I did not fully understand. But, as I said, Doctor Strange got many things that make it great and many things that are not very smoothly integrated or just feel strange. (haha, did you spot the joke?)
This movie is something you should be familiar with if you went into the cinema lately or watched any Sci-Fi-movie during the last 8 years. After killing a librarian and the vandalism of books, it went fully Inception in like 5 minutes runtime.
After that mind-blowing introduction of what we will see in (not even) 2 hours of runtime, the movie introduces Doctor Stephen Strange, a brilliant neurosurgeon who apparently got invisible speakers in his operation room where he plays old jazz classics, but I cannot see any of these speakers when I pause the movie. Also he is so good at was he does, he is more concentrated on the music than on the patient he performs open-brain-surgery on. Please note that I don’t want to be a patient of Doctor Strange.
He is also so good that fellow doctors come to him to seek advice. Or let him check the x-ray-picture where the bullet in a patient’s neck (?) was clearly visible on the monitor. Maybe Strange is not that good but everyone around him should tear their medical degree immediately. So, his colleague, Christine Palmer, asks him to safe her patient (with the obvious bullet on the x-ray) and assists him in surgery. Funnily enough, during the operation Strange is distracted by a clock, but was not distracted by the Swing he listened to 10 minutes ago in another surgery…
The classical journey
Like Count Dooku in Star Wars always said: “Twice the pride, double the fall.” That describes Stephen Strange. A brilliant doctor, but twice as arrogant. I mean what did you expect from a guy who owns a cupboard full of watches that is able to turn them? On his way to a dinner, where he speaks at, and which seems to be not in New York but in a mountain region (which is not in New York!), he is answering a phone call, looking at x-rays on an iPad while driving about 120 km/h and, how convenient, crashes in a phenomenal looking crash, in which his Lamborghini is reduced to the size of a soup can. So, Kids take notes: Do not look at your iPad while driving! Somehow though, he is found and taken to the New York Hospital he works for, where the doctors try to repair the damage done to his nerves. A quote worth mentioning is: “I could have done better”, right after he wakes up from surgery. Well, apparently you couldn’t because you were too busy driving your Lamborghini into a river, so no, you could not.
Desperate times call for desperate measures
After his crash, he desperately tries to repair his damage but ultimately fails. He fails not only in healing himself but also in life. His injuries destroy his life and he becomes so bitter that all his loved ones leave him, which leads to more self-pity. A vicious circle, he desperately tries to escape. One day, his physician sends him the files of Jonathan Pangborn who was completely paralyzed but somehow is able to walk and even play basketball now. Strange visits him and seeks advice, which Pangborn gives him. He sends Strange to a place called “Kamar-Taj” where he learned how to heal the body through the spirit. Strange apparently believes him and makes his way to Thailand to find the place Pangborn spoke of. Walking around a temple he is heard and followed by Mordo, a sorcerer. He takes him to Kamar-Taj, where the Doctor meets the Ancient One, the sorceress supreme, who shows Strange how he can heal through the astral-dimension, which he not believes, although Pangborn told him EXACTLY that earlier in the movie.
So after showing him the secrets of the sorcerers, the Ancient One casts him out, but with the help of Mordo (is it wrong to think of The Lord of the Rings every time I see him?) she accepts him and he starts to master the arts of magic.
Mistake
So now comes something that bothers me: As the Ancient One and Doctor (!) Strange introduce themselves to each other, she calls him “Mister Strange”, to which he replies with “Uh, Doctor, actually.” The Ancient One follows with “Well, no, not any more, surely”. So now I don’t want to correct someone who is that ancient and wise as The Ancient One, but just because his hands doesn’t work the way he needs them for his job, he still is a doctor by degree. I mean he studied, so that knowledge is still there, right?
Shamballa
Not a mantra, a wifi-password. And a mystical kingdom in Hindu traditions. These little things make you love the movie even more and they are so well placed. The quote in the back of his watch he got from Christine, the wifi-password and other details. Also these things bring some funny moments to the table, who prevent the plot from getting too serious. The bromance with Wong, the little jokes Strange makes, all these things add some comical elements to the movie.
Movie elements: Music and Screenplay
It sounds hard, but the movie isn’t worthy of that Soundtrack. Michael Giacchino wrote a wonderful score for this movie which gets completely lost in this visually stunning movie. So my thesis is this: You can either concentrate on creative visuals or a soundtrack that is not describing the picture. Because in every Marvel movie you have a soundtrack that is completely generic and predictable.
Scott Derrickson, the director of the movie stated: “[Giacchino] is doing what good scorers do, which is he is not just creating music that supports the images, he’s adding a third thing to the movie.[…]”, which is not true. Michael Giacchino made a beautiful soundtrack, I agree. But it is too much of a support for the picture and not an own element. I talked with another Marvel fan about the music and I even played a few parts of the soundtrack and the only one she recognised was the slow, emotional piano score from Stranges` recovery called “The Hands Dealt”. I think the reason why it is working in this scene is that there are no monumental crashes or epic space-time continuum thingies that lure you away from the music. It is still predictable but out of context a beautiful thing to listen to. Give it a try!
Visually stunning is a sentence that would describe that movie. It continues to throw picture at you, you probably haven’t seen since Inception. Besides that it possesses a visual element like no other. A street in Thailand that is full of people who are actual people and not supernumeraries is just one example of how this movie set itself apart from others.
Summary
Benedict Cumberbatch proves once more that he is one of the greatest actors of the 21st century. He deliveres performance that is outstanding, but limited by the script. The effects are not limited by this weak spot. In fact they are by far the greatest thing about this movie. If you need proof, just look at the four awards Doctor Strange achieved just because of the effects. Tilda Swinton won a Saturn Award as best supporting actress and it is deserved. She fills the mentor role completely and fits perfectly in the setting.
All in all you can say Doctor Strange is a great comic-to-movie-adaption and has a great soundtrack. But it limits itself with dumb jokes and stupid moments. Finally, I can give it a rating of 65, just because I have seen movies with more depth. I think it is a really great movie, but jacks a certain charm to make it even more appealing than it already is.
Rating: 65/100
Pros:
Soundtrack is really good
VISUAL EFFECTS
A great set of actors
Compelling to watch
Cons:
Soundtrack perishes under the visuals
Jokes feel dumb and crude.
Dr. Strange was one of the Marvel characters I didn´t knew the first thing about. Maybe that wasn´t such a bad thing. I could enjoy this without prejudice and enyoing it was. The visuals are amazing and even the plot was good which isn´t a given in Marvel movies lately.
Already watched it again and still think it´s one of the best Marvel movies.
Almost entirely utter dreck. Pretty visuals don't make up for having to watch BC for 2 hours now and in future MCU outings, let alone egregious whitewashing, appropriation, and my pet hate - stupid medicine.
I profoundly regret not having gone to watch this movie at the cinema when it aired, the movie is excelent and the music/sound effects are even better, Marvel Studios is getting better and better by the movie.
There was too much magic for me. It was like more than im Harry Potter. The final battle scene was kind of meh... I guess they followed the comics and I am not a big comic book fan. Especially not a Marvel fan. But the movie was good overall. The plot was nice. Top notch visuals effects and a great play by Mr. Benedict.
Stunning visuals, great benchmark for your new flat screen TV, apart from that, not quite sure why would you watch it
Marvel has set a new standard with Doctor Strange, surpassed all previous expectations and put Doctor Strange on the map. Benedict Cumberbatch was the only person fit for this role, and made Doctor Strange his own character.
The movie was an epic story of the making of Doctor Strange and taking a different path then previous Marvel Action Movie formulas, and this one got it right. I can't wait to see the next Doctor Strange, and this makes me even more excited to see more from the Marvel Universe and specifically the upcoming Black Panther Movie.
This decade's version of Hugh Grant, is now a star in the Marvel universe. Jude Law wants his roles back. First act is interesting enough, act two devolves into a poor man's Last Samurai, actually had me wishing this was a Cruise movie, then Act 3 is a CGI Transformers mess without the hot actress running around in heels. Yeesh. Cumberbatch is so over exposed these days I guarantee he'll be Rey's dad in Star Wars. Hugh had his romantic comedies, Jude had everything else. Cumberbatch has unfortunately plagued us with genre film and show performances. He even has McAdams from the Notebook! Maybe he will take over Hugh's spot eventually. Uninspired dreck.
The visual is amazing. Impressive fight scene at the start of the film. Cumberbatch is fabulous as always.
But, as many Marvel films have shown, Doctor Strange also suffer from a rather one-dimensional villain. The director gives a chance for Kaecillus (Mads Mikkelsen) to be more interesting by laying out a little hint about his motivation and ordeal, only to take that out and swept him as just-another-ambitious-yet-disposable-villain. Doctor Strange also has the same problem with Marvel films which try to pose threats bigger than life: it fails miserably. We were shown bombastic attempts to reduce all life-forms to non-existence, yet the threat is managed with little impact, both physically or mentally. As if nothing really big happened that day.
I think Marvel films work best when it deals more with the heroes' personal conflicts and goals which accidentally is intertwined with events larger than them. Like in the first two Capt America films and Iron Man 1. When Marvel attempts to do something too large to contain, it just resolves itself comically, like in Civil War and Avengers (both films).
Cumberbatch is always perfect in his role!
I didn't know much about this going in, I'm not too familiar with Doctor Strange as a character, but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I thought it looked fantastic, I laughed out loud several times, and Benedict does do arrogance so well.
it is fun movie, amazing CGI overshadow simple storyline, Benedict acting was awesome, meh villian, while sorcerer fighting scene and ending too lame
I'm so hyped to see this movie.
Honestly one of the best movies marvel ever made.
Idk why, but this really did something for me.
Benedict Cumberbatch did an amazing job playing his role (he IS Dr. Strange).
I have to admit, I got a sweet spot for superhero origin movies, but even then, I think this is better than most of them.
The villain is ok for marvel standarts, one of the more interesting ones even.
Solid soundtrack, cool costume design, Insane visuals sometimes, I love it.
9/10 If you want to watch a marvel movie, this is the one.
I actually hate Stephen Strange so damn much he’s a prick that no one really likes but they all have to get along with him because he’s the “best neurosurgeon” or whatever. Even as a wizard he’s got a huge attitude problem and I’m glad Wong is sorcerer supreme because damn Stephen’s ego would be too far gone afterwards.
However, ask me my favourite Marvel character/super hero and favourite Marvel movie is and I will never hesitate to say Doctor Strange. The movie is absolutely stunning visually and the comedy felt mixed in well. The side characters had so much personality and I adored it. Despite Stephen being absolutely unbearable at a lot of points in time, he starts to realise how he should have more sense about himself after being knocked off his high horse. He is so damn far from perfect, but hey, maybe that’s what I secretly love about him
It's very slow but really mesmerising. That's the best way I can put it.
Poor Pangborn.Refers one of the greatest surgeons on Earth that wouldn't operate on him to the place that taught him how to use mysticism to live again, only for that same Mr. Doctor's actions to lead to another kind of zealotry that would rip those powers out of him
All that said, no matter how many times I rewatch this, Swinton sells the "it's worth the rewatch" idea as she lays bare The Ancient One's hypocrisies in that "stretching out one moment" speech.
"Doctor Strange" is the 14th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it introduces the character of Doctor Strange, a neurosurgeon who becomes a master of magic. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Stephen Strange, who after a car accident that destroys the use of his hands, seeks out a mystical place in Kathmandu to heal himself. Along the way he meets Mordo (Ejiofor) and the Ancient One (Swinton), and faces off against former student and villain Kaecilius (Mikkelsen). The film follows a familiar origin story trope, but it is elevated by the strong performances, particularly from Cumberbatch and the supporting cast. The visual effects are stunning and the score by Michael Giacchino is also noteworthy. However, the villain Kaecilius is underused and the story itself is not particularly original. The post-credit scenes hint at a greater role for Doctor Strange in the MCU and potential for a sequel.
Marvel delves into the mystical with Doctor Strange, an exciting action-packed adventure that further expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story follows a prestigious surgeon named Dr. Stephen Strange who gets into a car accident and goes to the Far East in search of a miracle cure to fix his injuries, but instead he discovers a world of magic. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Tilda Swinton, the film has an especially good cast that delivers some strong performances. But the writing’s a little weak, resulting in a lot of murkiness about how the mystical world works and what the bad guys are trying to do. However, the special effects are incredibly imaginative and visually stunning. While Doctor Strange tries to be different than the average Marvel film, it more or less follows formula, delivering a fun, lighthearted superhero adventure.
It suffers from the old MCU formula, and relying on comedy too much. It should be more metaphysical and feature more horror elements, but aside from that it does a solid job of bringing this character to the big screen.
The funny thing i have watched the second part before this hahah, I really liked it and it was very interesting
Oh my God why do so many films still not pass the Bechdel test how hard can it be
69 | Stephen Strange was an arrogant doctor. He did anything for fame, for himself. In Doctor Strange, we would understand his journey from a prick doctor to a wise master. This film could be said success in developing Stephen Strange's character. His character in the first act is different than his character in the third act. Through this 2-hour film, we understand his old motivation and goal in life. Then he should learn from The Ancient One he can be more than that.
This film could be longer, so there would be more of The Ancient One story and the antagonist's point of view. Even though this film succeeds to do its job, it could be better. Doctor Strange and The Ancient One are the complicated characters in the Marvel universe. Their power could bring great impact to the universe, or even the multiverse. We could learn all of that when Stephen slowly learn in Kamar Taj. But that's the dilemma, not many people want to watch a film for more than 2 hours. Probably, this is a good decision in marketing-wise.
Something could go wrong easily when people learn to become a sorcerer. They not only need power and strong will, but also a wise heart. This example could be found in The Ancient One's three students, which are Kaecilius, Mordo, and Stephen Stange. They have different characters that made them have a different perspective on their powers.
Kaecilius only seek power and immortality for his sake without thinking about the consequences. Consumed by greed instead of asking The Ancient One about dark magic, he has his conclusion and betrayed The Ancient One right away.
Mordo has a good heart. He does anything for the world and people in general. But his way of thinking made him do anything by textbook and it is not wise if he wants to protect the universe from unpredictable dark magic.
Stephen Strange has his past as a surgeon that made him flexible in solving problems. That's why he is fit for the job. His weakness is arrogancy but by his training and learning in Kamar-Taj, he can control it. That is why he is the right successor for The Ancient One.

For ME, a typical Marvel flick: nice especial effects and witty lines cannot disguise a weak plot that has been told a thousand times.
Boring start, but come the second half, it gets really really good.
Imagine if BTILC fucked Inception and then dropped the resulting spawn repeatedly on its head.
"Doctor Strange" could have been Marvel's perfect occasion to add a different flavor to their cinematic universe, but unfortunately, it doesn't offer much to enjoy other than some mystical locations and spectacular "Inception"-like special effects. This kind of half-baked origin story might have been enough for phase one, but you would expect the formula to get refined after a dozen tries.
Cumberbatch did a good job on the character, even though the writing is not exactly on his side. Strange has become a charismatic figure thanks to his subsequent appearances in other MCU movies, but here he still struggles to become something more than a variation on the Tony Stark model. Still, he somewhat managed to be the only charismatic character in the whole movie. Marvel never liked the villains to steal the spotlight away from the heroes, but this time it all just boils down to lazy writing and bland direction.
Plot and writing not the greatest, but GOD those visuals. Astounding.
One of my least favourites so far in the MCU. Still a good film, no doubt.
'Doctor Strange' features a lot of intrigue and lore, which is certainly interesting to see unfold. I just felt a few pacing issues, nothing that frustrated me but it just felt a little slow moving in moments. I still enjoyed it, the story is a pleasant one and all the effects look splendid.
Benedict Cumberbatch is great in the lead role, I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton are good in this as well, especially the latter. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams are likeable in their respective roles, also.
Not one I love, but it is one I like.
beautiful effects for a superhero's solo film. i've got feelings about some of the casting choices and they're not good ones but second time around i'm still fairly impressed with bibidipop huhuhatch's performance. he's definitely a great actor considering i'm still not totally convinced he isn't half lizard.
SO EARTH HAS WIZARD'S NOW
IT MAY NOT BE MY FAVOURITE ENTRY INTO THE MCU BUT THE MORE I WATCH IT THE MORE RESPECT AND ENJOYMENT AND UNDERSTANDING I HAVE FOR IT. I SEE NOW WHY STEVEN AND ANTHONY CLASH AND BUTT HEAD'S SO MUCH NOW IN AVENGERS INFINITY WAR,
THERE BOTH SUCH
ALPH MALES, AND THERE BOTH ALWAYS THE SMARTEST GUY IN THE ROOM, NO WONDER IT'S MEASURING STICK TIME WHEN THERE
TOGETHER AT THE BEGINNING.
WITH THAT BEING SAID MARVEL ONCE AGAIN
HAS NAILED IT AND MADE ME
GET INVESTED AND CARE ABOUT A CHARACTER
I HAD NO CLUE ABOUT AT THE TIME.
THERE MASTERS AT DOING THAT AND
I LOVE THEM 3000
FOR BEING ABLE TO MAKE ME CARE ABOUT
THINGS I THOUGHT I WOULDN'T.
THIS MOVIE WAS AWESOME
A LITTLE SAFE BUT IT WAS AN OG STORY..SO.
THE SPECIAL EFFECTS WERE ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC AND MIND BLOWING. LOVED THE TWISTS AT THE END STRANGE PULLED AND HEY....ANOTHER INFINITY STONE POPS UP.
O OOoo SOMEBODY'S LOOKING FOR THEM.
THE HUMOUR WAS FUNNY AND HELPED ME LIKE AND INVEST INTO THE STORY MORE. THE BAD GUY'S WERE COOL TO GIVE STRANGE A WAY FROM BEING GOOD TO BEING GREAT AND SOME DAY HE'S GOING TO MAKE A LOVEY ADDITION TO THE AVENGERS

next up GOTG VOL2
one of my favorite movies of all time
Interestingly, I loved this film so much more with my most recent viewing. At first, I thought this film was a lot of style over substance, but honestly, this is a great origin story and the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) is perfect and actually a very accurate depiction of the character. The film also does have a really great story, though not original it does bring some amazing visuals and acting to make this story feel fresh.
The one negative I have is Mads Mikkelsen (Kaecilius), he is an awesome actor and he is awesome in the film, but he is a little bit too underused in this film and he actually makes a very good villain in this movie. Other than that, this film is so awesome and I find after every viewing I like it even more.
Despite it's firework-like effects, knock out performance from Tilda Swinton with a decent one from Benedict, the rest I couldn't get behind. Doctor Strange is sadly another copy and paste origin story with nothing new added to the mix. I found myself getting pretty bored at times and didn't find any enjoyment. Before I was really looking forward to this, but I'm a bit disappointed.
Even Mads Mikkelsen couldn't break the Marvel curse in terms of villain problem.
Was good for a new super-hero marvel
An egotistical, world-renowned surgeon loses feeling in his hands and must search for meaning in what's left of his life. Seems like a fairly easy, if overdone, template for the next chapter in Marvel's sprawling cinematic universe.
Yet, strangely (har har), there's very little character progression and the doctor's personal arc falls thoroughly flat. Following a brief stumble through his rolodex of former colleagues and a very short humbling at the hands of spiritual masters, Strange makes no personal advancement. He merely shifts from being the world's greatest surgeon to its resident sorcerer supreme. No penance, no spiritual enlightening, just a short rocky patch in his perfect life and then a nearly-immediate gratification. Shallow character development among the supporting cast, particularly in Mads Mikkelsen's villainous foil (underdeveloped rivals being a dirty habit in the MCU), doesn't provide the crutch that might have smoothed things over somewhat.
The effects work is dazzling and creative, providing much more than we saw in the trailers, but that's really the only draw here. Jaw-dropping battle scenes and fabulous twists on reality are its bread and butter, and worth seeing for the spectacle alone, but the lack of a deeper context is disappointing.
I'll give this credit for trying to have a bit more pathos than the standard Marvel smash-athon.
For a sub-2 hour film in this anthology, it does contain a lot of filler. I liked the Inception style graphics for the first 10 minutes of their use but after an hour of it, I was done.
I cannot stand Benedict Cumberbatch normally but he was palatable here due to his many high quality costars.
The in-credits cameo was fun albeit completely out of context. The post credits speak to a follow up that is yet to land - though planned I'm sure.
7/10
Keep up the good work and I'm a huge fan of the app
very beautiful film that marks the spirits and touches the field of spirituality!!
This one was refreshingly different. Pretty cool actually!
This was the most difficult of the Marvel Universe, for me, in which to suspend belief. When you take away a base line of reality, the whole universe has no stability or consequences, thus no dread, thus no failure. It's like with Doctor Who, if the sonic screwdriver can diagnose and remedy any problem, there is no adventure. This movie lies too close to that edge. I also felt the horizon shifting contortions were too abstract to imply real danger so the action became hollow for me. Although I give it points for CGI concepts and executions. There were excellent performances, Benedict Cumberbatch (with a flawless North American accent, no less) and Tilda Swinton are excellent performers and Rachel MacAdams can ring romance out of a dish cloth. Even upon rewatching, I give this film only a 7 (good) out of 10. [Sorcering Superheroes Action Adventure]
No thinkJust got back from the world premiere. It's a lot of fun and thoroughly entertaining. Classic Marvel humor and tone
Only things I disliked are :
- Stan lee's appearance in the middle of a fight scene saying a line only the scriptwriter thought was funny.
- Strange's quick transformation from a mediocre sorcerer to fighting a Master and winning.
- Extremely and unhealthy fictional story, you have to shut your brain really off to enjoy the story. Especially the logical thinking area.
Things I liked :
- Amazing Visual Effects.
- Nice Intro story, some twists in there too.
- Made me giggle sometimes.
- Many WOW effects throughout the movie.
Doctor Strange is a great standalone movie and a surprisingly good addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, considering how out of this world this character is...this time not literally, though, he only travels outside of this world.
Let's start off with what the film does best: the outstanding visual effects. It seems very hard to praise them enough. They are unique in many ways, they fit in perfectly, rarely do you have that moment of "oh, that specific thing was clearly CGI" (of course not taking the unrealistic stuff into account where it has to be computer generated) and they are just stunning. The same also holds true for the "magic" they introduced in this movie. The orange sparks, as well the opposite crystal like weapons don't just look great, but also add a certain weight to the fight scenes, since especially the sparks have some mechanical feel to it. I don't think much needs to be said about the inter-dimensional scenes, they are simply mindbogglingly beautiful.
Furthermore, the actors are outstanding and do their part. A special shout out should go to Benedict Cumberbatch, who truly is the essence of what makes Dr. Strange come so convincingly to life, and Tilda Swinton, who plays the Ancient One. The score is nothing too remarkable and outstanding, but at certain key moments it can be able to overwhelm you and add to the epicness, like when Strange levitates for the very first time. Now, the humor is not always perfect, but - especially for a Marvel movie - it is most of the time actually quite decent and had me laugh out loud a couple of times without really taking away the seriousness of the movie. Much of that is probably also carried by dearest Cumberbatch. Onto the next thing they get quite right, the cinematography. Admittedly, there aren't all too many scenes where it does stand out a lot, if it's not nearly pure CGI that is, but some do. Next to the death scene of the Ancient One, with just an amazing scenery and great shots after shots, there is the scene where the camera slowly zooms into the villain's teary eyes, as he is trying to convince Cumberbatch ... I mean Strange ... and explain why he is doing what he does. This coincidentally leads me to another great thing about this film:
The villain is actually complex and has good arguments! All the horrible acts they commit appear tiny compared to what they are trying to achieve, at least in their eyes. They aim to finally defeat the crushing forces of time and live eternally, but not just for them - for everyone on Earth. Anyone, who has ever lived through even a short period of existential crises, quite understands how scary fading time can be and is. Their motivation is understandable and the viewer does get to think about his points and actions in a moment, where he poses no threat and where the "good guys" are legitimately called into question (also supported by the cinematography ^). And this not only holds true for our villain, but for most characters. Everyone has clear motivations that are truly understandable. Now, onto the main character. The introduction is daring, but amazing. He is arrogant, rich, talented, but also quite charismatic and quirky. I do understand that this has turned into a common trope with the likes of Tony Stark, but it works. At the beginning you can just revel in his skills, in his extravagant life-style and sheer coolness and then, he gets into a car accident and loses the ability to use his hands properly and here is where they truly dare to stretch our ability to sympathize with him thin, yet we still always do. No matter how much of an asshole he is, how many good-meaning people he insults and scares away and all, we can see that this is his whole life crumbling before him. He plainly states that he finds no meaning in life without what made him successful and famous and, as he stumbles through the streets of Kathmandu, he does seem absolutely helpless. This is what makes his character arc have such a pay off, as it ends with the ultimate self-sacrifice. He offers to spend eternity dying to save everyone he knows. You can really empathize with him.
And that payoff also has another positive aspect to it. The final boss fight is different. No massive beam of light shooting into the sky, no hordes of faceless goons, no big end battle, he simply and cleverly uses time, the thing that ultimately destroys us all, to protect "us", creating an infinite time loop, in which he is being killed over and over again, until he can convince our space villain that if he doesn't leave Earth, he will be trapped as a prisoner alongside with him. This was also nicely foreshadowed when he first tried out the time altering.
I'd also like to quickly mention how much I love the symbolism of his broken watch, not only reminding him of love, but symbolizing or warning him not to break time too much. They also really nicely set up the "villain" for the next movie, with him trying to preserve the natural laws, as he thinks breaking them will have unforeseeable consequences and it in fact is more than hinted at that messing with time can have dire ones. Also, I think this is our first Marvel hero that actually is appalled by the first time he has killed someone, even if in self-defense. It fits with him being a quirky doctor and genius, but not a killer, and his brief but interrupted pondering on whether to leave it all behind or kill for the greater good is more than justified.
A few criticisms I have heard are the aforementioned Tony Stark - cliche, heavy use of exposition and rushed training sequences. Those are all justified in their own right, but they don't take much away from the actual movie.
i didn't expect to much about this movie but i was supreended with the visual effects and the great story
Great visual effects! Didn’ even knew doctor’s Strange history! Excelent movie. Very entertaining.
Amazing! I don’t know this hero. Good filme, One of the best of marvel.
The visuals and effects were absolutely amazing. While the story is nothing to boast about, it's a great movie for introducing Doctor Strange into the MCU, and for leaving plotholes for future movies to fill. A recommended watch for anyone looking for a movie which will absolutely pleasure your eyeballs.
So I plunged into the world of the Marvelverse again. Don’t get me wrong it’s okay but I find it like a slightly warm bath, I can enjoy it and it works but it is not as nice as a piping hot bath that I can luxuriate in for hours.
This particular ‘Marvel-bath’ has more than a few things going for it though, a stellar and strong cast with Benedict Cumberbatch fleshing out Stephen Strange and his journey perfectly and Tilda Swinton (a ‘woman’ the universal cry goes up) a perfect counterpoint as ‘The Ancient One’. Throw in the underrated Rachel McAdams, charismatic Mads Mikkelson and Chiwetel Ejiofor plus a strong supporting cast and you have a fun and well turned out film.
In fact, for a Marvel film there is less po-faced seriousness on display which for me made better viewing. The story is nothing new despite being dressed in the Emperor’s Clothes of Marvel. An arrogant, unlikeable protagonist gets his deserved comeuppance and then learns through tough lessons and revelations humility and kindness and with these he becomes stronger than he ever was…or something.
The film builds to the usual super-hero climax with battles, near-defeats and then victories all courtesy of the mystical powers of Dr Strange with nothing beating his pun-power ability. The special effects are up there with the best and the CGI character of the cloak was a favourite of mine.
The one thing that nearly all super-hero films annoy me with and it is the super-hero part of the stories, which I realise makes me sound very odd. In Doctor Strange, for instance, his powers are nearly limitless, so apart from equally as mystical enemies, just by seeing what Dr.Strange can do, you know that he is basically invincible. Call him up with your world-threatening problems and ‘zoooop’ all done, sorted. Obviously, there are checks and balances built into the stories and worlds to prevent this but they appear to be scripted conveniences that have no real logic about them, even within the Marvel Universe.
Having said that I found the film well-acted, fun and entertaining. Coming from me saying that about a superhero film is basically awarding them a gold medal. As with all of these films we end up with the explosive finale and the annoying post-credits ‘another film is coming’ sequence but this is the way of these films and most viewers would know that nowadays.
All-in-all Doctor Strange was okay and a fun way to pass a few hours.
This is a decent superhero origin story. It accomplishes the tough task of explaining magic and time travel in this universe. Cumberbatch is pretty good at playing the cocky doctor but he kind of annoyed me. At least he changes in the second half. Madds Mikkelsen is wasted on a throwaway villain and so is Michael Stuhlbarg on some other doctor. The visuals are the best part of this movie and they look great. I look forward to seeing how Dr. Strange plays into the rest of the MCU.
Doctor Strange is indeed strange. But in all the right places.
A must see, turned out way better than i thought it would. Great movie
Nice movie but not the best of the MCU films. Tilda Swinton though is always amazing to watch!
I enjoyed this a little more the second time around.
For womeone who's being introduced to the story of Doctor Strange for the first time, I really enjoyed this movie. Having no expectations based on any precedents I think this movie was great. I liked the characters and even if the story seemed kinda watered down, I still enjoyed it. We were dropped into this whole new perspective of the world along with the character, but unlike the character, we didn't get as much context; that's the only thing that bugged me a bit. I loved the concept and I can't wait to learn more about it. I hope that in future films they give us a lot more information and context. Visually, this movie is a trip (I can't find any other way to put it), so it was very fun to watch!
I started off this movie hating the main character, and finished it feeling slightly closer to neutral. To be honest, the only character that interested me at all is the cgi villain and there got to be something wrong with that.
What kept me watching this movie (other than needed backstory for future mcu films) were the CGI and costume design, but the kill la kill coat was pretty great too!
cool effects in this movie
Despite it's firework-like effects, knock out performance from Tilda Swinton with a decent one from Benedict, the rest I couldn't get behind. Doctor Strange is sadly another copy and paste origin story with nothing new added to the mix. I found myself getting pretty bored at times and didn't find any enjoyment. Before I was really looking forward to this, but I'm a bit disappointed.
Even Mads Mikkelsen couldn't break the Marvel curse in terms of villain problem
It's good entertaining movie. Not much of acting from Benedict. He is must great actor what he is in this movie. One time watch and you won't get bored.
in my opinion it is the best movie i’ve ever seen
The last time I saw Doctor Strange I ended up saying I was a bit tired of the whole formula of the MCU movies. That it had become sort of stale. Well...now, watching all of them back to back, I don't know. I enjoy the "formula" more these days it seems.
Doctor Strange IS a good movie. That has never been in doubt, but I think I enjoyed it more this time around. You somehow see the whole thing Marvel was trying to spin when you see all the parts one after the other.
This movie is visually stunning, sounds amazing, and the acting is rather good. There is one thing that makes me hold back a little on the rating though...
Doctor Strange is...strange. You really have to pay attention to get everything that is going on. It can be a bit tiresome when all you ever wanted was a laid back action movie to spend the evening with. Minor gripe...I know...but it still irked me somewhat.
Anyway...
Good Movie!!!
Well worth investing the time to watch it again.
Doctor Strange is bloody gorgeous but left a little to be desired.
Don't get me wrong...the movie is entertaining, and except for the feeling of seeing it all before, it kinda works...
But it is that feeling...the template all Marvel movies follow. Hero origin story, a villain that threatens the whole world, struggles to defeat that villain, then at the end...more struggles on the way. We've seen it before...soo many times before, and...it's getting kind of old. Oh yes...the movies are all visually stunning. the action fantastic and the stories are passable, but there's some staleness creeping in.
I've no doubt Marvel will continue to follow this template as the movies continue to rake in the cash at the box office, with strong sales on various formats, but sooner, rather than later, people will get tired of it. Let's just hope they are ready for that...
As for Doctor Strange?!? If you can stand another movie following the Marvel "blueprint"...this one is quite good.
exciting film....not one of my favorite marvel films but still exciting
Benedict Cumberbatch sounds like what my hillbilly neighbor gets drunk and calls people
Surprisingly entertaining. Cumberbatch helps the movie. A. Lot
Good and entertaining marvel movie, enhanced by Benedict C
Really let down by this film, worst Marvel Studio film in my mind. Story made no sense and everyone's pulling out new superpowers out there butts. The only good part about this movie was that it was visually stunning.
Great effects, casting, and storyline. Best part for a superhero movie? You finally get to enjoy a movie with only one main superhero for a change! Rare these days, enjoy it before they throw him to the wolves in a movie with 50 others.
It is actually quite some time since I watched Doctor Strange but somehow the movie must have slipped between the cracks since I appear to have forgotten to review it. So I am about to remedy that now. To put it in simple terms: This is an excellent movie. It is a wonderful display of magical fireworks with a decent enough story to keep it together.
I have to confess that I have not really read many of the comics containing Doctor Strange so it is a bit difficult for me to comment on the aspect of the film versus the comics. From the little that I have read I got the impression that the comic book version of Doctor Strange was a wee bit more dark, serious and mature. This movie starts from the beginning of his career though so I guess there is some justification for the less mature Doctor Strange in the movie.
Doctor Strange is a skilled neurosurgeon but a bit of an asshole. Actually more than “a bit”. He gets involved in a accident, that he pretty much causes himself due to his arrogance. Fast forward to the interesting chapter were we get to see Doctor Strange being, reluctantly, admitted into a scruffy looking monastery on the other side of the planet. That is when the fun starts. Doctor Strange is in for a ride. Slowly Doctor Strange gets knocked into him that magic exists and he is expected to practice it.
The time at the monastery, or perhaps we should call it a school, leads to a few funny episodes and I do like the head monk’s bantering with Strange and the way she does things. Talk about getting thrown into the deep end of the swimmingpool first. Strange’s continued arrogance and immaturity is a bit annoying from time to time though. That has to be said.
What is the use of super heroes if there are no bad guys around. So after Strange having trained for a while, and mostly failed miserably, the bad guys starts to crash the party. So no more pretty living room magic for Strange. It is time to go head to head with some serious competition. Unfortunately, for a good chunk of the first fights Strange mostly falls on his arse. They are still cool and beautiful to watch though.
Slowly Strange starts to get to grip with this whole magic thing and he also starts to shed some of that arrogance of his and take some responsibility. About time since the despicable bad guy are, of course, working towards freeing the real BIG bad guy, father of all evil and mother of everything else bad you can think of. Time for a showdown.
As the fighting escalates so does the user of special effects and personally I though the special effects were both beautiful and spectacular. I really liked them.
I am not sure Cumberbatch would have been my first choice for Doctor Strange though. To me he do not really project the image of the wise and skilled Wizard I expected. He is not bad though. The only other person that stood out for me was the chief monk and The Ancient One which I also quite liked. The rest of the characters, well to me they mostly lived in the shadows of these two, even though they were in general likable and sometimes fun.
There were a few rather hilarious parts where Strange has to reveal the truth about what he stepped in to his former girlfriend. I have a soft spot for the surprise moments in both movies and books.
I rather not get started on time travel since I generally hate it as a story element since it almost always leads to paradoxes or is simply so poorly done that it is blatantly obvious that someone tried to cover up for a lazy and shoddy story. However I guess I have to mention that screwing around with time is an important part of the plot in this movie. Luckily it is done in such a way that it do not, in my opinion, negatively impact the movie. Actually, to my surprise, it is used in a rather cool way.
So, bottom line, a movie I liked quite a lot. 5 out 5 stars kind worth of liking.
Only scratches the surface of the character, but it did a pretty damn good job of telling his origin story.
i think the movie was too fast, from arrogant to god Level
Wow! It's like Inception x 10 without the mind fuck. Just ridiculously mind-blowing visual effects. I had a little difficulty with the main character going from arrogant asshole yet very skilled surgeon to casually glib superhero. The whole thing was so urgent and life or death that when the comic relief came it felt a little out of place or maybe it just caught me off guard a bit. Overall it is a highly entertaining movie as long as you just accept it as it was intended.
The 14th installment in MCU brings to the big screen the character of Stephen Strange.
After a car accident, the egocentric neurosurgeon travel to Nepal and goes in a journey to heal his hands and comes across "The Ancient One" and a world full of mysticism.
Marvel took a risk with "Doctor Strange", making a movie unlike anything they ever done. The big positives are the performances, mainly Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton. Mads Mikkelsen also does a good job, although his character could had a little more background and development.
Last but not least, the visuals are some of the best i've hever seen in cinema. Worth watching in 3D.
Dude wtf is this film. Totally waste time.

The Marvel Universe becomes transcendental. It doesn't veer far from the Marvel formula but it is hugely entertaining and Cumberbatch is terrific, as usual.
Strangely, there are echoes of some of the lesser superhero movies within. Green Lantern, Elektra and 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer share similarities. Obviously, Doctor Strange is better than all of them and takes the superhero genre into a new, fantastical realm.
