Do the Right Thing 1989

It has been well, well directed and interpreted. Racism or imposing your point of view?

Always wanted this to be the first Spike Lee I would watch, never expected it to hit so hard. Truly an amazing film. Never failed to entertain me for 120 minutes, at the end left me speechless.

If you haven't seen this one yet, watch it! It's one of those films that everyone with a little bit of love for cinema should watch. Maybe its even one of those films everyone needs to be shown in school.

I still don't know what to write about this film at the moment. Still have to let it all sink in and rewatch it next year.

Still a masterpiece all these years later. One of the greatest "slice of life" film ever. It's shocking Spike Lee didn't win the Oscar for best director. Even if you didn't care about the story, you have to admit his directing was very inventive and never boring.

Good movie. Important movie. It may be 33 years old but it's still relevant. You can feel the 100 degrees and the tension. It reminds me of La Haine, but I like this movie better for its more intriguing motley NY multicultural microcosm. It's of course not a very enjoyable movie. It's not meant to be. Virtually everybody is racist, everybody is yelling and - as a cold North European - I can't really relate to all those true or histrionic emotions that eventually lead to doom. Some of the characters seem to be a bit too cartoon-ish, even stereotype. But that's clearly a deliberate choice. This movie is full of brilliant characters, Which all represent certain sections of the American society. I like the fact, that almost nobody in this movie is exclusively good or bad. It were easy to depict the black community as innocent victims of brutal cops but the movie is much more complex. Needless to say, but it has a great score.

Wow, this movie is absolutely a masterpiece. No way to improve it, and with the George Floyd situation, I'm sure anyone who would have rated it less than a 9 or 10 in the past, would reconsider... as the script perfectly mirrors reality, even though reality had not even happened at the time.

The recent events solidify this script as a perfectly solid script. The movie touts excellent humor, diverse characters, drama, love, buildup, fluidity, emotion, simplicity, reality, deep messages, exposure, a now proven brilliant cast, culture, beautiful visuals & camera work, steamy scenes, and more!

Amazing film! Excellent especially for those who haven't seen it until now! Its truly a film that has clearly gotten better with age like a fine wine!

I'm sure I'll get a lot of hate for this. But I was disappointed with this film, I wanted to like it a lot more than I did but I had a few problems with it. The story is pretty good and the acting is pretty good, but some of the dialogue wasn't very good and some parts of the film were very over the top in acting and writing. I give it a 7 because it is a good film and still has some relevant messages for today audiences, but I expected so much more from Spike Lee after watching Inside Man and BlacKkKlansman, the reason I was disappointed was that this is often described as his magnum opus and in my opinion, it really isn't.

Once again, please note that I do think it is a good film and definitely worth a watch. But if you are like me and are watching if for the first time then maybe go in with lower expectations and you might enjoy it a little more.

Perfect atmosphere (you can almost feel the hot), realistic dialogue (the italians are hilarious) and above all great message. Spike Lee's masterpiece.

A hangout movie that turns into something much more meaningful and still very relevant today. The cinematography really stood out to me. There were a lot of cool and interesting shoots.

Only mister Spike Lee could've done this movie to be this great. The way you're attached to every single characters in this movie is something else, it blows your mind how it starts so slow and yet at the end of the movie you're feeling like you've lived in this neighborhood and you understand each person's point of view and feelings at the right time.

Spike Lee, you're the man.

While I can't remember why or when I this movie on my watchlist I'm happy I did so. Starting out as a fun (and we'll filmed!) comedy DTRT subtly transforms into a drama about love and hate and problems that unfortunately are as present as they were 40 years ago. It's also interesting to see Sam Jackson, Giancarlo Esposito, Martin Lawrence and John Turturro in their early days. Highly recommend!

After all these years, the "Fight the Power" dance by Rosie Perez is still THE shit. No other can match it, or her. A perfect opening for the movie, too.

And the rest of the movie? Still the best and the most intense film dealing with these themes, without going overboard or downplaying anything. So easy to recommend.

Pure racial violence in this movie.

With his third film, Spike Lee made what I consider to be a masterpiece.
It’s something that’s both emotionally gripping and intellectual, and it feels so far ahead of its time, especially when you compare it to the Oscar winning Driving Miss Daisy that came out in the same year and tackled similar themes.
I also can’t get over how good it still looks, and the Criterion remaster probably helps in this regard, but the visual choices of the film are so good. I love the sunburned look, which I’m pretty sure is meant to represent the rising tension in the neighborhood metaphorically.
What else is to be said? It feels like a movie that’s written by an anthropologist after years of research (this thing predicted gentrification), it has such a thorough understanding of its subject matter, it’s both funny and subtle, it has Public Enemy needle drops, it has great performances, it has everything I’m looking for in a movie.

9.5/10

Had seen a bunch of Spike Lee films 20 years ago. She’s Gotta Have It, Clockers etc. but not this one.

In general i regard Spike Lee as a bitter, resentful prick. So i was surprised that this film mostly loved up to it’s reputation.

There’s a little too much tell not show for my liking with lots of points made directly through characters’ dialogue but it switches tone very well multiple times. The cinematography and editing is dynamic and keeps things moving along nicely.

Not a masterpiece but very good.

Racism amidst experiencing racism themselves.

Nice idea, nice cinematography but the plot is lacking. This is noticable because in the end the movie is too long.
