Disobedience 2018

Both Rachel's did an amazing job portraying their characters and their romance is simply beautiful, however I was expecting a bit more. After reading the book, I was a bit disappointing with the fact that it was mostly focused on the religion rather than their relationship. Even though the movie focused a lot more in the relationship, I was really unsatisfied that they kept the endings very similar. In the book Dovid, offers Esti her freedom without her asking for it, however she decides to stay with him because of their unborn child. Ronit goes back to New York and ends up with a man. In the movie, Esti asks for her freedom, which she gets, but still ends up staying back in England rather than going with Ronit to New York.
These characters have been in love since early teens and people have tried to separate them since then. I truly believe that they deserved an happy ending where they would stay together.

For some unknown reason I kinda expected more... Rachels are both amazing though.

Delicate, subdued, and ultimately heartbreaking. A quiet tale of forbidden passion set against a strict religious landscape.

I seem to have watched a different film to many of the critics. I'm a fan of Sebastian Lelio but the script, the performances and the general feel of the movie, the plot, the ending just didn't work for me. At times, the acting was like a made for TV movie. It picked up in the third act with some tension cranked up. But this is a misstep from Lelio, and not even a hugely erotic scene between Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams could save it. Disappointing.

I'm not a film critic, so around 1hr 7mins when Weisz spits in McAdams mouth is when it got interesting. I'm not Jewish so everything else went over my head.

A well-told love story, set against a background of religious orthodoxy

Kind of like a cross between Todd Haynes's Carol (2015) and Daniel Kokotajlo's Apostasy (2017), Disobedience eschews melodrama, and is uninterested in presenting a binary story where faith is the Big Bad. Although it is certainly critical of the strictures that can result from a rigid application of Halacha [Jewish religious laws] and/or a literal interpretation of the Taryag Mitzvot [613 Commandments], the community itself is depicted respectfully, with the most representative Jewish character arguably the most sympathetic figure in the film. Disobedience does feature a very graphic lesbian sex scene, but it's one of the most thematically justified, least exploitative sex scenes I can remember, crystallising many of Lelio's thematic concerns. Although things can be far too on the nose from time to time, Lelio's subtle and non-intrusive direction more than compensates for that, and overall, this is a fine film, both thought-provoking and moving.

Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams star in the indie drama Disobedience. The story follows a young woman who returns to her childhood home to attend the funeral of her estranged father, an orthodox Jewish rabbi who disowned her. Neither Weisz nor McAdams give much of a performance, and the script doesn’t help them out. Despite the orthodox Jewish community setting, the issue of faith never comes up or factors into the characters’ choices. And the placing is incredibly slow, dragging on and on. Poorly made, Disobedience is a drab and monotonous film.

I give it a solid 9 because it depicted the lesbian yearning perfectly lol
also, Rachel Weisz

but the ending is fucking bullshit, Esti risks her whole comfortable life getting Ronnie to her house and when all is good she doesn't leave with her? wtf felse is keeping her, just get in the fucking cab in your pajamas hen, have a life finally

As is so often the case with Hollywood movies the movie poster is completely misleading.  While there is certainly a backdrop of a secret relationship the movie has a much more serious message.  This drama is definitely a slow burn and the final scenes (especially the final scene) were very well done (I was worried that they would violate the spirit of the film).  The film really touched me as someone who has (in my own way) went against what was expected of me and forged my own road.  I am free.

Lovely movie. Great cast with thorough and thoughtful performances. A tender telling of the anguish of grief and choice. I give this film an 8 (great) out of 10. [Drama]

Despite a lack of innovation regarding the plot and a sex scene where both parties stay fully clothed (WTF, next time just skip the sex scene), Disobedience made all the right choices to keep the story true to life and the performances were stellar.

I hate when they don't end up together.

This is such a movie. Women being shamed for their sexuality. I don’t know. It didn’t work for me.
