the film is very good...
Level "Interesting" • 7  • Entertaining and Good.
I'm surprised by how run-of-the-mill "Dark Skies" is. There's nothing scary about it and there's not a lot of chemistry between the husband and wife. The most frustrating thing is that this is another example of the personal problems of the characters overwhelming what the movie is about...alien abductions.
I also can't get past the fact that the aliens' visitations of the family were accompanied by bright lights, loud noises, etc. This movie is set in the crowded suburbs. How do the neighbors not notice!?!?
I do like the alien design, even though they are basically the standard template "Greys". There is a twist to the story late in it's run time, also. It's not a big surprise, just unexpected.
I enjoyed this film. The acting was great and the story was well paced. I thought the husband character was a bit over the top at times, and the "bad-influence, much older friend" character may have been a bit over done. Those aside, however, it was a great film, and well worth the watch.
Now, time for spoilers. The ending of the film was very open-ended and left a lot open for interpretation. The prevailing theory is that Sammy wasn't the first in the family to be visited by The Greys, it was Jesse. This is evidenced by the drawings the mother finds in the end, which adds credence to this idea. Additionally, the mother notes that Jesse was constantly sick as a child, which may indicate a response to an implant, experimentation, or fit into the next theory.
The second theory is that Jesse himself was an alien and was retrieved by his kind. This theory is weak, however, it is supported by the fact that he was constantly sick as a younger child. This could indicate a being struggling to adapt to a new environment, or could just be typical kid things. Getting more off course, The Greys could be using this method to study and learn about humans.
I like to believe the first theory, mostly because of Jesse's response to Sammy's call on the walkie in the end. He's there, nearby, and trying to escape. I feel like there's a lot more story left to be explored, but maybe that was the point.
Sooo many 'Signs' references. But it's well anyway. There is couple of things that don't make sense but overall it's a good movie.
First you got to know, that I like this kind of movies. Conspiracy theories with aliens are great. =)
The actors and actress are really playing great in this movie. And the Thriller-part of this movie are also good. I never get bored, and there are not too much alien-based bullshit in it. Or mystery stuff.
Muy buena película!
If you liked Signs, you're gonna enjoy this for sure.
one of the best in its "sub-genre" =)
This is rather good but I'm a sucker for alien movies especially when there's a good "they're already here and messing with us" conspiracy behind it.
This is a good typical "Insidious" like scary movie. Where strange and disturbing occurrences with increasing intensity keeps happening. The source of the occurrences surprised me, but it doesn't really matter what the source is. The acting is great and the tension building is also enjoyable. So it's a good movie, if you like those types of movies.
Keri Russell leads the cast in the horror thriller Dark Skies. The story follows a suburban family that begins to experience paranormal and bizarre occurrences that leads them to suspect that they’re being visited by aliens. Unfortunately, the plot is rather formulaic and predictable; full of the usual tropes and character stereotypes. However, the directing is fairly good, and is able to set a creepy atmosphere. Yet while it’s entertaining and delivers some scares, overall Dark Skies is a mediocre film.
Definitely in the same vain as the paranormal activity movies, but just a UFO/Alien version instead. Either way it was definitely a good movie.
I was pleasantly surprised by Dark Skies (2013). I went into this one knowing absolutely nothing about it and it actually managed to reel me in and keep me hooked. With the way it starts I was 100% expecting it to just be your run of the mill “haunted house” kind of film so what we actually got was a nice surprise in my opinion. Some details in the first quarter of the movie actually left me expecting it to be exactly like the movie Before I Wake (2016).
A lot of moments were surprisingly a lot freakier than expected despite the fact that they were actually pretty darn simple. For example, seeing the youngest son all of a sudden have no eyes, the dad’s face when he’s out alone by the yard or seeing the boarded up doors and windows come loose. I actually really love the fact that we don’t really get to see an up-close detailed look at the antagonists, I think the vagueness and the fact that it doesn't heavily rely on special effects helped a lot in upping the creepiness
Normally I would be a bit annoyed by the fact that a movie is a bit of a slow burner but I think this one used all its time well with great moments of building up tension or the great world building in the scene where we see J.K Simmons’ character. It actually was quite a ride seeing the characters go from being surprised, to scared, to denial and finally accepting the reality that they were in. The great way it was all built up made this a captivating watch.
Just about every main actor in this did a great job, especially Keri Russell. They all really had me convinced that they were truly being terrorized by the end of it. I’m actually surprised that even the child actor impressed me because I usually think they’re the worst.
The only negative thing that sticks out, which I actually found to be cringe-inducing, was the scene where the oldest son is talking to a girl, more specifically the moment where I guess he tries to reenact a scene he saw in a porn movie, it was just odd as hell in my opinion.
Other little random thoughts:
I found Daniel, the dad, to be my favorite character. Some might think he was a bit of an asshole but I just found him to be the most realistic character, all of his reactions were exactly how I would expect an average every day John Doe to react like.
Maybe it’s just me but I actually found this movie to be very reminiscent of the movie 1408 (2007).
It was clichéd as hell but I kinda liked the fact that the couple seemed to have become paranormal investigators at the end of the film.
A relatively good film with a decent atmosphere, although it was not very horror and the freezing in the back, except for a few scenes, do not expect much, but on the other hand, a relatively successful screenplay and direction highlight this film. It's a pity only the end of the film, when the screenwriters let us awaken our thinking and imagination. And it's a pity for me that the end of the film could have been better, but even so, this film is good and certainly better than what filming today.
Incredibly dull and cliché. Boring
Best of the horror flicks I've seen so far this Bootober. Keri Russel was great.
The thing I liked most about this movie is that it didn't rely on heavy special effects to drive it. Some of the best movies have little to no effects at all. Instead this movie relies on acting & building suspense & intrigue. It is your typical "alien abduction" type of movie & the plot is not very original. It follows pretty much the same diagram for all alien abduction movies. Mysterious thing lurking around, children are acting weird, caught a shadowy image on a camera, things go crazy & someone is abducted. That is the typical scenario for these type of films. Still there was a good amount of suspense to create some tension for me & overall I liked it. Not great or revolutionary but good. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars or 7 out of ten.
Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe, or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.
way better than i was expecting, even a bit creepy, but i wish theyd find less annoying ways to end movies when alluding to sequels.
This was surprisingly fantastic!
The husband is a douche!
Great movie but mygawd do i hate these types of open endings!
Umm.... That was it??! Hmmm... Ok????
Wait?! A vegetarian alien??? #doilookfatinthesepants
Let see how this turns out....
Creepy!! :-)

the presence of the greys is now a fact of life, like death and taxes.
