I went in with no knowledge of the what this movie would be about, and this is about how I would have expected a Kevin Smith rom-com to go! With that being said it’s a bit more mature than most rom-coms, and a better plot than most other Kevin Smith movies. Is it anything groundbreaking? Not particularly, but it is quite good and one with a decent message at that.

Fave Quote:
I love you....I love you. And not, not in a friendly way, although I think we're great friends. And not in a misplaced affection, puppy-dog way, although I'm sure that's what you'll call it. I love you. Very, very simple, very truly. You are the-the epitome of everything I have ever looked for in another human being. And I know that you think of me as just a friend, and crossing that line is-is-is the furthest thing from an option you would ever consider. But - I had to say it. I just, I can't take this anymore. I can't stand next to you without wanting to hold you. I can't-I can't look into your eyes without feeling that-that longing you only read about in trashy romance novels. I can't talk to you without wanting to express my love for everything you are.
And I know, this will probably queer our friendship - no pun intended - but I had to say it, 'cause I've never felt this way before, and I-I don't care. I like who I am because of it. And if bringing this to light means we can't hang out anymore, then that hurts me. But God, I just, I couldn't allow another day to go by without just getting it out there, regardless of the outcome, which by the look on your face is to be the inevitable shoot-down. And, you know, I'll accept that. But I know, I know that some part of you is hesitating for a moment, and if there's a moment of hesitation, then that means you feel something too. And all I ask, please, is that you just - you just not dismiss that, and try to dwell in it for just ten seconds.
Alyssa, there isn't another soul on this fucking planet who has ever made me half the person I am when I'm with you, and I would risk this friendship for the chance to take it to the next plateau. Because it is there between you and me. You can't deny that. Even if, you know, even if we never talk again after tonight, please know that I am forever changed because of who you are and what you've meant to me, which - while I do appreciate it - I'd never need a painting of birds bought at a diner to remind me of.
This movie usually gets written off as some average romantic comedy, but it's so much more. It's funny, witty, sometimes poignant and deep when it comes to human sexuality and our sexual histories. Some people should see this movie for educational purposes. You should always put the person ahead of their past. There was that one 'wtf' moment towards the end, but it only added to the whole thing, I think. All in all, I'm glad I saw it.
New Jersey trilogy by Kevin Smith
Clerks - Part 1
Mallrats - Part 2
Chasing Amy - Part 3
In my teenage years, "Chasing Amy" was one of my favorite movies. And even though I can now see the numerous problems that are present from today's perspective, I'm still a big fan. It's certainly the case that director Kevin Smith was a bit out of his depth with the subject matter, but at the same time, I'd still say he got it right in the end. The whole last third is so satisfying that I can put up with one or two unpleasant plot elements. And the film is also so much more than what critics like to make of it. It's obviously very personal to Smith, and it definitely made me think about a few things at the time.
Overall, the film also sets itself apart from other romantic comedies in a positive way. It helps that the characters feel 100 percent real and the dialogue (except for numerous inappropriate terms) is strong. That's not to say the characters are all likable. Ben Affleck's Holden in particular is a prime example of what would be called toxic masculinity these days. His relationship with Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams) is also toxic but equally captivating. And the resolution is perfect, with Adams' fantastic performance taking the film to a new level. Kevin Smith has never been as good a director as he was in the latter half of the 1990s.
Best romcom. When her lesbian friends hated on her for being Bi that was crazy.
Chasing Amy is a brilliant and inspired indie comedy from writer/director Kevin Smith. Looking at issues of love and friendship, the story follows an unlikely romance that is put into jeopardy when past dalliances are brought to light. The cast is led by Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, and Jason Lee, who all give solid performances. Smith’s directing is rather restrictive, but his dialog is especially witty and raw. While ostensibly the film’s a comedy, it’s able to cleverly explore some deep and provocative social issues. With Chasing Amy, Kevin Smith returns to his roots by telling a personal story that has something poignant to say.
A nice change of pace from Kevin Smith's two previous movies. This felt like a much more mature romantic comedy then most. It really dealt with some serious issues of sexuality and romantic history. Not that this is the most politically correct movie in the world but I'm surprised where it went. And there was some decent humor in here too. Needed more Jay and Silent Bob though.

The idea for this movie is pretty simple, and so is the storyline for the best part. But somehow I cannot think of a single movie that did the same.
The strength of this movie lays in a combination of settings that are very unique, and all have an influence on the movie. The movie combines emotions, dick jokes, soul searching, love and friendship in a very subtle way.
A simple but strong movie!
