Cassandro 2023

I'm a casual wrestling fan, but I'm not that much into Lucha Libre. That's why I wasn't familiar with the whole Exótico aspect. In this biopic, Gael García Bernal portrays a gay exótico called Cassandro, who manages to rise against all odds in a rather homophobic business. At the same time, it is a touching mother-son story. The pace of the story was a little too leisurely for me at times, but the movie is still thoroughly entertaining. Gael García Bernal is perhaps a little too old for the role, but he delivers a really strong performance. And for a wrestling film, there are also a pleasing number of wrestling scenes, which are generally competently choreographed. However, they don't quite come close to the real product. Even though "Cassandro" is certainly not the best wrestling drama I've ever seen, it's still an entertaining feel-good biopic overall.

Enjoyable to an extent but it wasn't as impactful as I thought it would be.
