Somehow, after watching for the second time, I loved this movie even more. It's just so damn neat. The action is unbelievably good. The plot is engaging, kept me on edge from the beginning till the end. And the tension was real, even with knowing the result, I was still slightly nervous when everything was coming to conclusion. It's the first serious film in MCU, as far as I'm concerned, and for me it was even more enjoyable than your standard pop-corn super-hero movie. To me Captain America seemed like a boring character after his first introduction, now it's hard to believe how invested I am in him. Also, Winter Soldier was such a great villain, even with barely saying a word he effortlessly stole the show. Hydra though. Such losers. You'd think, after all those fails, they'd just give up and go home.
[8.3/10] Captain America: The Winter Soldier has rightfully been termed a paranoid thriller. At the heart of the movie is a hidden conspiracy. There are timely discussions of liberty versus security in the information age, with privacy and order cast as conflicting aims. Ripples of the surveillance state abound, and the film is rife with twists big and small to upend expectations and show how deep the rabbit hole goes.
It’s also one hell of an action movie. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo give it the “buckets of bullets” approach from a 1980s actioner, replete with heavy machinery, billowing explosions, and a raft of hand-to-hand combat. There are what feel like two-dozen action sequences in the picture, but each maintains its own rhythm, tension, geography, and importance. Despite the staccato cuts, the viewer can still follow the quick-paced combat with clean blocking and clear direction for each set piece.
But despite the success on both of those counts, Captain America 2’s best mode is as a character piece. There are cinematic universe-shaking reveals here, like an evil secret organization having burrowed its way into the good guys’ club and that institution being literally and figuratively blown up. Likewise, there are more cool fight scenes than you can shake a shield at. And yet, the film’s greatest success is that it anchors these world-turning events and heady takes on keeping the globe safe in the reactions and responses of its major players.
First and foremost among them is the title character. Steve’s story here is one of questioning what to do and whom to fight for after seventy years on ice. After the events of 2012’s The Avengers, he’s working for S.H.I.E.L.D., with the knowledge that it was founded by some of his allies from back in the 1940s. But the conflicts are much trickier and less morally clear than in World War II when he felt righteous going after the bullies in the European theater.
He finds himself sent on missions where he thinks he’s fighting for justice and is, in fact, just doing Nick Fury’s bidding. He gets his briefings and acts accordingly, only to find out that his superiors have been “compartmentalizing” different objectives that he might not agree with. Steve Rogers left a world of soldiers and found himself immersed in a world of spies. His adjustment to that new environment, his quest to find out where his principles fit within it and whom he can trust, is the real thrust of The Winter Soldier.
But it extends to his partners in crime, so to speak, as well. Black Widow may have her best outing in the whole MCU here, as someone willing to do the thing Cap is squeamish about, until she finds out she may not have been doing them on behalf of the good guys. Falcon makes his debut here, and beyond his instant, humanizing rapport with Steve, he represents an example of a modern day version of what Cap is hoping to do, a soldier still trying to do right in the world. There’s even his neighbor (and secret SHIELD agent) Sharon, who invades Steve’s privacy as spooks are wont to do, but who ultimately stands up for what’s right when it isn’t easy.
One of the most impressive things about The Winter Soldier, and in hindsight, the thing that set the Russo Bros. up as the MCU’s go-to directors for big team-ups, is how well it services all of these characters. By necessity, not everyone in this two hour movie has a big role. But everybody has something to do, a moment to shine when it counts, that proves the directors’ bona fides in balancing large casts without giving anyone the short shrift.
The same goes for the two opposing poles of the film: Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce. It didn’t dawn on me when I first watched the film, but in retrospect, The Winter Soldier creates a noteworthy flip there. In the first half of the movie, Fury is the questionable spook running missions that are not entirely on the up-and-up, while Pierce seems to be the straight arrow keeping things in line.
By the halfway mark, it’s clear that Fury is, despite some past duplicitousness, on the side of the angels, and Pierce, despite his polished professionalism, is the secret head of HYDRA. The flip plays nicely on audience expectations from the slipperiness of Jackson’s version of Fury and Redford’s wholesome living legend status. It’s a meta version of the film’s “Who and what can you really trust?” game, played on the audience at the same time it’s being played on the characters. The way the film blends in-universe history and the extra-textual air of its performers is superb.
But true to the title, another focal point of the movie is Bucky Barnes, now known as the Winter Soldier. The reveal that he is not only alive as of 2014, but has been a brainwashed hitman for Hydra since he was lost in action as part of the Howling Commandos’ missions, makes things personal for Steve. It’s not just that these baddies from his past have returned. It’s not just that they’ve poisoned the organization started by his brother and sisters in arms. It’s that they’ve abused his best friend, made him a weapon and tool to impose their order on the world, something that goes against everything he and Bucky stand for. The Winter Soldier is a metonym for how Hydra’s view of order strips people of their humanity and freedom in order to bend to their will, a will that Steve will do whatever it takes to stop.
But Bucky is also a symbol of the fact that when faced with something human, something that reminds us of who we really are, those ideals within us can be revived. Bucky eventually recognizes enough of his best friend to stop his rampage and question his orders. In one of the film’s most down-to-earth moments, a lowly Shield tech refuses the villainous mook Rumlow’s commands despite a gun held to his head. Captain America himself stands up against Pierce, Hydra, and the organization they’ve consumed, with good men and women at his side. In a world repeatedly described as chaotic, the tonic is not mortal threats to the disruptors, but good people sticking to their beliefs and principles.
In that way, the movie threads the needle between working as a sequel to The First Avenger, with return engagements for Bucky, Peggy, Hydra, and other vestiges of the Forties-set period piece, as well as The Avengers, with a firm presence from Fury, Natasha, Shield, and the state of the world after the Battle of New York. Taking a movie to reorient Steve, and figure out how his upstanding desire to do right fits into a more tangled geopolitical era is a sharp choice from Marvel Studios and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It’s the resolving of the man out of time necessary to fully bring Captain America into the twenty-first century.
Along the way, there are meaningfully echoed lines about being in the wrong business or sticking with someone you care about to the end. There’s setups and payoffs for everything from Black Widow’s taser disks to the friendship and mutual lessons learned between Fury and Pierce. The movie connects to MCU films past and present in meaningful but unobtrusive ways. Apart from the salient themes of freedom and principle versus enforced order and mercenary tactics, and a spate of blood-pumping action scenes, Cap 2 is simply a well-constructed movie, with attention to detail and smart structure that leaves it feeling satisfying despite tackling a hell of a lot.
But all of that structure, all of those bullets, all of that contemplation of the surveillance state, wouldn’t mean a damn without the time Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes to examine the effects of all this on Steve, Natasha, Bucky, and more. Keeping the human element front and center while balancing the fantastical, the paranoid, and the pressures of a cinematic universe is far from easy, but it’s why Cap’s second outing set the tone for the MCU going forward, and remains one of Marvel’s high water marks.
I did miss some MCU movies and never could watch them. This one was one of them and while watching MCU movies from the beginning, I could finally watch it and it was definitely amazing! I don't know how I really missed it but it deserves every praise it gets. Imo, this was the best MCU movie to that date this was released (2014).
P2 finally arrived with 1 of Marvels best
This is a fast moving, action-packed thriller. It is accurate when others refer to it as similar to a James Bond story. Chris Evans is as good a Captain as can be imagined and his supporting cast is solid.
However, I am getting very tired of superhero movies. I was never a comic book kid (or adult), but these heroes are so invincible that they're really never in trouble. Oh sure, they're in dangerous or perilous situations all of the time, but I've reached the point where I just sigh when the tension is ramped up. I know what's going to happen to the superhero and it's ultimately nothing.
Another issue is that while Captain America and crew are hard at work here, their lives would have been much easier calling in Iron Man or a god like Thor to do all of their heavy lifting. I know that the filmmakers try to explain why they aren't present, but Hell, Thor could get there in two minutes if he really had to. I hate picking nitz, but I'm almost empty in my enthusiasm for Marvel and its universe.
Captain America would be much better if separated from all other superheroes. That is, in a world with no Avengers. That's why Nolan's Batman movies worked so well. There was no Justice League. There was no one to potentially clean up the mess if Batman screwed up. In the case of Captain America, deep down you know that Thor is only a Mjollnir's throw away from pulling the Captain's ass out of the fire.
The best thing about "The Winter Soldier" is Scarlett Johansson. It's inadvertently become the "Summer of Scarlett" for me as I've seen this movie, "Lucy" and "Under The Skin" over the past few months. I also have to add her role as the sultry computer voice in the otherwise putrid "Her" to my Summer list. She is really proving to be a versatile actress and I'm at times even able to forget how easy she is to look at.
The Winter Soldier is a different kind of beast to most Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The franchise is largely known for its mix of typical superhero action and comedy one liners, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier delivers something different. Whilst, yes, it's still a Marvel superhero film and therefore contains all of the heroics that you would typically expect, the tone is much more grounded and serious.
I watched this film tonight on Blu-ray 3D, and let me tell you the 3D is absolutely incredible. Shields fly out, guns protrude out of the screen and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) flies right towards your eyes. It's a truly breathtaking experience, and one that I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of the MCU.
3D always tends to work well with films that contain plenty of intense action sequences, for reasons which are pretty obvious (3D being all about offering spectacle). So it helps that the Winter Soldier has some of the greatest action sequences in the entire MCU. From the opening fight on the boat to the amazing and truly iconic elevator sequence ("Before we get started, does anyone want to get out?"), the action is so well choreographed. The cinematography is on point too, shot with this shaky cam style that offers some real grit to proceedings. It feels like something straight out of a Paul Greengrass Jason Bourne movie, and it gives this film a really distinct and unique flavour away from the rest of Marvel Studio's filmography.
It's something that judging by the trailers, I can imagine the upcoming Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) movie having a similar style to, especially as her scenes here are some of the highlights of this movie by far. She's always been one of my favourite characters in the MCU, because she has this really mysterious back story that's honestly quite intriguing; we learn a little more information about it here, as well as get some fight sequences that honestly manage to rival Steve Rodger's (Chris Evans) superhero antics in the film.
One thing that's really weird is seeing Agent Carter (Hayley Atwell) as an old lady. It feels so odd seeing Hayley Atwell in elderly make-up, given that we are so used to seeing her look so much younger. Her scenes with Steve are tragic though, as Steve pays her a visit and we see she has some form of dementia. It's sad seeing her suddenly act as though she's just seen Steve for the first time since World War 2, and forgetting that she'd already seen him since. It's handled so well too, as this is what dementia is like when you know somebody with it. You live through that pain of them slowly starting to lose their memory of you, like this cruel disease that keeps eating away at their brain.
It's clever how this is reflected in the story of the Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Like Peggy, he too has been losing his memories in regards to Steve, although in this case it is due to his Hydra brainwashing rather than any form of dementia. The script really plays into this, as we see Steve's determination to trigger Bucky into remembering, and it recalls his stance from the previous film, 'I can do this all day'. Steve doesn't give up on his friend, he keeps pushing for him to break the immoral programming that Hydra have placed him under. He knows his friend is still there, and can bypass the killing machine Hydra have turned him into, and he won't stop until he gets through to him.
This film is also the first to introduce Sam Wilson/The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), who will of course later become Captain America himself. Already you can see the qualities that will later make him a worthy holder of the shield. He's someone who will always help, who believes in Captain America and shows a great degree of loyalty towards the cause of battling those who seek to spread hate or misery. Sam, in short, is the perfect fit for the tales of Captain America, and it's not hard to see what Steve Rodgers likes about him.
Armin Zola (Toby Jones) returns in this film, this time with his mind inside a computer. He has created an algorithm of those he considers to be a threat to Hydra, both in the present and the future, and Hydra plan to use 'Project Insight' to eliminate these threats. This is a prime example of one of the elements I like the most about this sequel. It brings back so many past memories for Steve Rodgers; from Bucky to Hydra and Armin Zola, it's like his past is coming back to haunt him, like ghosts who will not leave him alone. It means that despite the now modern setting, it still feels intrinsically tied to The First Avenger. The algorithm allows them to throw in some really cool hints to future aspects of the MCU, such as Stephen Strange (who would later pop up in his own solo film, entitled Doctor Strange). It has that really strong thematic through line of the past and present (with hints of the future) colliding throughout, and it works extremely well.
Overall, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a prime example of how to write a sequel. It keeps its thematic ties with the original film, whilst also offering something fresh, new and distinct. This is one of those rare cases where the sequel is better than the first film, and it's no wonder that the MCU still looks to it for inspiration.
Better than first one and one of the best Marvel movies for sure! Full of action great directing and nice plot 8.6/10
This movie was pretty badass. I thought it was really cool that they kept the identity of the Winter soldier hidden for a long period of time (which makes me wish that I hadn't known who it was at all), which made this movie really intense. I really enjoyed the action in this movie, and lived seeing the characters. finished this at 1:21AM. nice
The first one was so much better.
I actually surprisingly enough really enjoyed this. I'm kind of conflicted with Captain America. On the one hand, I think he's a dreadfully boring character, but for some reason I really liked both of his movies and they're probably two of the best Marvel films. Oh well~
Really liked the tone of the movie and overall it was much better than the first one (which I also liked).
Speechless.
I love how Marvel is connecting all their recent films and TV shows
Basically the best movie the MCU has so far.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe just keeps upping the level I expect from each movie they release.
This is no exception, the first Captain America movie was the weakest of the Pre-Avengers movies, falling far short of the expectation set by Iron Man and Thor, I was a little worried after Iron Man 2 and then Captain America... But Thor restored my faith and was along with the first Iron Man movie... my fave of the pre-Avengers films.
This time round they kicked it up a notch, the back story is out of the way and all of the exposition has been covered in previous movies. Marvel fully expect that the people who watch these films, will have watched all of the previous ones... Probably in order. So there's virtually no time wasted with covering much of what's happened before.
The new character of Sam Wilson (Falcon) is introduced right at the start, and I must admit that I found the immediate friendship that seems to have happened in 2 mins is a little forced and plot convenient... But done in such a way that I was irked by it as I may have been in a weaker movie.
We switch straight away to CA and co on a mission... this is the one part that really bugs me. Black Widow picks up Cap in Washington for a mission when he's talking to Sam Wilson... It's morning because we see them jogging at sunrise. Next we switch to night time and they're seemingly half a world away and it's only 93 mins later.... Actually it must be less than that because the hijacked ship was taken 93 mins earlier and they still had to scramble Cap his team and get them on a plane and to the target... Now I admit I'm not sure exactly where the ship is supposed to be, but from later dialogue in the movie I think we can place it somewhere in the Indian ocean... A good 4000 miles away.
It's not a major issue... but it does irk me greatly all the same, and should have been written much better. It's not the dialogue that irks, but the content.
The banter between Cap and BW throughout the movie is well written, a mix of serious and funny that develops as the movie progresses. We get to see more of the dry humour that Black Widow has and it's used to good effect.
I won't go into great detail about the rest of the plot as I don't want to spoil it for people too much. But the pace of the movie is very well laid out, it doesn't jump from one set action piece to another as so many bad action movies do. It has peaks and lulls that work really well overall.
The acting is very good for an action movie and shows just how much thought Marvel studios are putting into their universe. I was not a fan of Chris Evans in many of his earlier films and thought he made a terrible Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four movies... but then again, they made poor choices for each of the actors in those movies and it's no wonder they failed miserably.... They need to bring them back in house and do them properly.
But I digress... Good performances all round, a decent plot, excellent character development that sets up movies to come during Phase two and three of the MCU.
Of the 3 post Avengers movies so far (not seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet)... it's really hard to rate them. I am a huge fan of the Iron Man and Thor movies. So I'd put Thor first, Iron Man second and Winter Soldier third... But don't think that is in any way a bad thing. It's entirely a personal preference and all three films are excellent and set the standard for movies of this genre.
I for one am really hoping the greenlight a 4th Iron Man movie, can't wait to see GotG, and I'm so looking forward to Age of Ultron, Ant Man, The Dr Strange film and the new Hulk movie.
I give this film a very high 9 out of 10.
Am I the only one who didn't like the movie all that much?
Traaaaaaaaaaaaailer tiiiiime: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLWsK1ZFunA
(bla bla bla, hate that stupid "seems bit short"-filter)
i re-watched this and i forgot how little of a role actual bucky (even just hints) play out in the movie... im just really excited for more bucky scenes i guess. love how sam was introduced. besides my disappointment with how little bucky shows up, its a genuinely good captain america movie, and a lot of really important things to the mcu happens here.
I experienced I liked some of the Marvel movies less when I watched them a second time. Not his one, though.
Clearly a step up from Thor: The Dark World. Action is really good so is CGI but this also has a good plot. Not that it is very original - I mean conspiracies and evil that wants to take over the world are as old as cinema itself. But here it is something you can actually see happen. What is said in the movie that you can´t take away freedom it needs to be given away (not the excat line but the meaning is the same) seems to become truer every day. Even outside the MCU it makes sense. Not with an Organisation like Hydra but actually with real governments.
I give it 5 out of Pi.
love this movie and the whole Marvel. Hail Haydra lol
I cant even remember what happened lol...most of the superhero movies have just merged into one blurred memory wirh very very few standouts between Deadpool and Dark Knight
Curveball of the MCU. I'm in love.
Captain America kick ass(es)! I'm keepin' this movie on my iPad forever! Action packed movie without a second of boredom!
Amazing! Best movie I have seen in along time.
This is maybe the best Marvel movie yet. Thor, The Dark World had put the bar a bit high after the Avengers, and now, Captain America, The winter Soldier has made it clearly higher. I'm not going to tell here really nothing about the story of the movie, you have to go and see it.
I'm going only to say that this movie has a fast action pace, almost non stop. Since we know now the origin of Caps, there is no need to go to the boring stuff. Action from start to the end.
In this movie you will be able to see good action scenes with "Batroc the Leaper", "Black Widow", the "Falcon" and obviously the "Winter Soldier". You will have also a nice re-introduction of "Arnim Zola" in his first version has a virtual entity and a direct hint with a mention of a threat to HYDRA from Stephen Strange (aka Doctor Strange).
And last but not the least you will be able to see in the post credits the connection to the "Avengers: The Age of Ultron" with 3 new characters. Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver) and Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch), the two only mentioned as "the twins".
First of all I would like to say that I didn't liked Captain America: The First Avenger and for me it is the weakest film of Marvel Phase One. The only thing that was good about it was the origin story of Captain American himself, the rest was just a whole disappointment. Despite that fact, and Marvel being now in a whole different level, as soon as I saw the trailer of Captain America: The Winter Soldier my hopes about liking it were a lot higher. And so it was, I have to say that it was absolutely awesome!
Besides being above all an action film, it's also a great conspiracy political thriller. The plot is great and very well structured with a lot of suspense until the final climax.
There's also humour here and there to balance all the dark tone of the film, that results very well. Specially some scenes between the Captain and the Black Widow are very funny.
There's a few twists in the story, some already expected others not (at least for me).
Much more depth was given to the characters and that's also something good that needs to be mentioned.
But of course there's some flaws, this is film is not perfect. Some things didn't make much sense and that's the reason why I will not give it the five stars. But I don't wanna talk in details about them because I would have to spoil some things to you. You will discover for yourselves.
There's a lot of amazing action sequences during the entire film that will keep you entertained the whole time and the CGI is stunning, very well done!
The performances are all great! Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie and Robert Redford that turns out to be a pretty good villian. Every single character has a glorious moment in this film, the good or the bad ones, all of the actors had their opportunity to shine at some point and I really liked that fact.
The most important thing of this film is the fantastic plot, that many times in an action film like this one is totally forgotten with the amount of action scenes just to keep you entertained. This film just not bring us that but it also has a decent story to keep you focused too. Gripping from the beginning until the end, Marvel continues to put the bar higher and higher from film to film. That's why I think Captain America: The Winter Soldier is pure awesomeness!
OH and please, don't leave the theater as soon as the film ends! It looks like there's a lot of people that still doesn't know how Marvel films work --' There's a mid-credits scene and also a post-credits scene.
"Before we get started, does anyone want to get out?"
What's to say that others haven't already said? It is one of the best in the MCU library and sticks to the spy genre with cold war feel and that's what makes it so good. Chris Evans asked to have better hand combat in this and they delivered.
Film 156 (Goal: 300) of 2024:
Often revered as one of, if not the best MCU (some Avengers film may have some thoughts about that), Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the boost the MCU needed at the right time post-Avengers - after an extremely disappointing Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World.
It's not difficult to see why this film is beloved. With frequent Community directors Joe and Anthony Russo at the helm (in what is a surprising choice that paid dividends for the MCU long term), Captain America: The Winter Soldier, gives Captain America a chance to shine in the modern day.
Extremely well directed with first rate action and set pieces, a fantastic underrated score with some noteworthy motifs, great acting from all the leads, and an excellent story that applies grounded but elevated stakes into the MCU. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the standouts within the revered franchise.
the fight scenes in this movie make me incredibly happy
Chefs kiss but not the best in the trilogy. The pairing of Black Widow and Captain America is just chefs kiss all over again.
"Cobie Smulders"
Yeah she does!
In a movie with Scarlett Johansson, Emily VanCamp, Haley Atwell, and Redford, Cobie still Smouldering is an achievement.
ma note est de 79 excellent film !!
this is essentially a surprisingly decent spy thriller where steve rogers flirts with all his friends... love that
The action in this film is great
The action sequences are amazing both the choreography and how it’s shot. To me one of the best MCU movies. Along side Thor rangnarok and the guardians of the galaxy trilogy.
just wish there was more bucky and sam and less pierce and rumlow

Great Captain America movie, even better mindless action & spy thriller.
You can enjoy this movie in vacuum or much more as part of the whole MCU.
Easily the best MCU movie, the only one that has earned a 10/10
Fast action plus multiple cuts? That’s the recipe for this Action Blockbuster of a heroes without superpowers!
The first Captain America movie was terrible, but this was definitely a huge step forward. Both the spy film tropes and semi-realistic take on superheroes are rather generic, yet the combination of the two elements surprisingly works here.
The most fascinating element of the MCU franchise is that it doesn't stick to the same directors and crew so that each character's series can digress into wildly different genres. While many experiments failed, this ranks amongst the most successful ones. It tries something new without being as divisive as "Iron Man 3" or "Thor: Ragnarok".
The quality of the action sequences, which had been a big problem in the previous film, is remarkable here and the pacing is fairly good too (I wouldn't have minded if it were much shorter though). We also get some old-fashioned shooting and car chases instead of light beams and superpowers. I doubt I will ever become a Cap fan but Black Widow definitely helped me enjoy this movie more.
So I decided to watch this right before I watch the first new episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier just to have a sort of connection to it [since the news about one of the minor characters from this movie appearing in the show broke out] and I don’t regret it at all.
It’s one of the better marvel films with stakes that felt high and almost feeling like an avengers movie but without the whole team itself.
Not sure if it was the best idea to bring in Natasha Romanoff as I felt like there was so much chemistry between her and Steve that I know for a fact that they could’ve easily been a couple and I wouldn’t have complained at all [sorry Bruce].
Also loved the sexual tension between the captain and winter soldier :smirk:
The best MCU movie still to date!
Entertaining!
'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' makes for an enjoyable flick. Chris Evans does great work as the lead character, while Scarlett Johansson gives her most fun to watch performance in the MCU up until this point; it would've been great if she had such a role pre-'The Avengers', so she wouldn't have felt so out of place to me in that.
Anthony Mackie and Robert Redford are notable in their respective roles, as is Sebastian Stan - even if, to be honest, his character's connection with the lead didn't quite hit as hard as the film attempts - at least for me. I didn't really believe how his character came about and how Barnes acts throughout, Stan does well though. Samuel L. Jackson is also good.
Everything else is exactly what you'd expect from a film of this size. Great effects, entertaining action and a satisfying story. Very good, all in all.
The Revisit the MCU Project (2021) #9 of 23
Since Cap is my favorite superhero, I might be a bit biased, but I rather enjoyed this one the first time I saw it, and I did so today. It isn't as enjoyable as the first one, but that's no surprise. It looks and sounds a bit better, but that's more due to advancements in movie-making technology and experience, rather than this movie especially. This is, after all, the ninth MCU movie.
The acting is up to par and the story is engaging and exciting but lacks a bit of the good storytelling that was present in the first one. Despite that, it works.
There is one thing I want to pick on though, and that is the fact that this movie was more of a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie than anything else. I wish it could have been more Cap driven. We do get a few good "Cap" scenes, but most of the movie revolves around the aforementioned organization.
Overall Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a nice couple of hours of exciting Marvel goodness...and of course, Scarlett Johansson.
Of all of the MCU movies, this is the one you can show to someone who has no interest in comic book movies.
THE WACPINE OF ‘CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER’

The Good:
From the opening sequence in the boat to the explosive finale, The Winter Soldier improves on the first Captain America in every possible aspect.
I love the very physical, high-energy action scenes this film has to offer. The one in one with Batroc is amazing as are the Fury car chase and the elevator fight scene. This film has the best fight scenes in any MCU film before the last two Avengers movies.
The Winter Soldier deals with basic ideas of human fear, loss, friendship and loyalty and does so in a way that doesn't feel too patriotic but naturally appears throughout the film.
Samuel L. Jackson finally gets his share of the action and damn is he badass.
Filled with paranoia and uncertainty on who to trust or not, the stakes are high and danger lurks everywhere. This makes the viewer stay on the edges of their seats all the time.
The likes of newcomer Robert Redford and Emily VanCamp complete the already great cast headed by Evans, Johansson and Jackson.
The story is a tightly plotted political thriller of sorts, with a couple of great twists along the way. It’s also a glob trotting adventure of 007 calibre, which makes it feels bigger and bolder.
The way new information slowly provided by the film instantly changes the way this story flows and feels is brilliant.
The way the film ushers in Anthony Mackie’s Falcon feels so subtle that it's almost like he has always been around. The character is yet another realistic re-creation of the original character from the comics. Fortunately, he is well used in the climax, so we get a good understanding of the type of superhero he is.
The Russo brothers prove their understanding of the source material and how to translate that into an entertaining film. It’s no wonder they were brought back to helm the last two Avengers films.
The Bad:
Considering that he is mentioned in the subtitle of the film, you would expect the new villain to show up a little bit more, but he doesn't get into play properly until after the first hour or so. The slow build-up to the shocking reveal is effective but also makes us forget about the film’s main plot.
It's perhaps slightly overlong. With so much plot and action stuffed in, it gets somewhat numbing by the end.
After the first couple of scenes, the film stops exploring the characters and their feelings further, not giving the plot time to breathe. That makes the dramatic side of the film shallow.
The Ugly:
Sebastian Stan with long hair.

I'LL START BY SAYING
CAP (STEVE) IS MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE AVENGER EVER AND ALWAYS WILL BE, I JUST THINK HE'S SUPER FREAKING AWESOME AMAZING FANTASTIC PHENOMENAL AND CAP AND HIS MOVIE'S CAN DO NO WRONG. AND THE MORE I WATCH THIS SECOND INSTALLMENT THE MORE AWESOME IT GETS AND THE MORE I LOVE IT. IT HAS SO MUCH TO CONTRIBUTE IN ENTERTAINMENT AND TO THE MCU AS A HOLE. YES THIS WAS WAY MORE
SERIOUS THAN CAPS FIRST SOLO OUTING
AND THERE WAS WAY MORE ON THE LINE,
LIKE THE FATE OF THE PLANET. BUT
TEAM-CAP HAVE GOT THIS
I LOVED HOW SO MUCH CAME FROM THIS MOVIE THAT IS ALL APART OF THE MCU
INTERWOVEN INTO IT'S FABRIC, LIKE
THE SONG PLAYING IN CAPS ROOM IS HIS SONG IN ENDGAME, BUCKY,SAM,PEGGY,RUMLOW,
WANDA,QUICKSILVER
AND EVEN BLOODY "NOOB MASTER 69"
MAKES A GUEST APPEARANCE.
AS I SAID THIS WAS AN OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE MCU AND ONE HELLA
OF A SPIE AND PEACE, WAR, DOUBLE CROSSING , HUNTING CAP THRILLING ACTION INSTALLMENT AND THERE IS NO WONDER MARVEL IS AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN WHEN THEY ARE ADDING AND CREATING AWESOME AMAZING BLOCKBUSTER MOVIES LIKE THIS. MARVEL REALLY KNOW HOW TO BRING IT. THIS IS WHY I'M A VERY LONG TIME SUPER FAN OF MARVEL AND I ALWAYS WILL BE, BECAUSE NO MATTER WHAT INSTALLMENT MARVEL ALWAYS DELIVERS AND GIVES ME ALL THE SUPER HERO
I CAN HANDLE,
IT'S WHY I LOVE THEM 3000.
EVERY SCENE WITH BUCKY
AKA THE WINTER SOLDIER ARE JUST SUPER FRICKING AWESOME AND I LOVED SEEING HIM
AND CAP SQUARE OFF THEY ARE
THE BEST BITS OF THE MOVIE, BUCKY IS A SCENE STEALER WHEN CAPS NOT IN THE SHOT. SEEING FALCON JOIN OUR TEAM IS AWESOME AND I'M GLAD CAP HAS ANOTHER FRIEND, A FRIEND HE CAN RELY ON AND TRUST WHO HAS HIS BACK AND WHO WILL FOLLOW HIM INTO ANY BATTLE. HYDRA ARE COOL ENOUGH AS BAD GUY'S FROM CAPS PAST.
"I CAN WATCH CAP ALL DAY"
AND YOU WON'T HEAR A PEEP OUT OF ME
AS I AM ALWAYS IN TOTAL AWE WITH
CAPTAIN AMERICA.
THIS SECOND SOLO INSTALLMENT WAS
AWESOME BUT THE BEST IS YET TO COME

Oh I'm so in my wheelhouse with
"The Infinity Saga"
TEAM-CAP THEN,NOW....FOREVER
MORE THAN :a: FAN
#ALWAYSTHATMARVELGUY
Everything about this movie just works and it sets up Age Of Ultron beautifully. yet another great addition to the MCU
A nice rummage through the genre bin in search of a hybrid that hadn't yet seen the light of day: the action / adventure / superhero / political thriller. It's enjoyable enough, if a touch on the shallow, superficial side. Though it runs a bit long, I don't feel like the drama was given quite enough time to simmer and skeptics will see right through an early plot twist involving a major death (or two). The action scenes look and feel great, though, with an emphasis on physical effects in lieu of CG that pays big dividends.
Scarlett Johansson gets a lot of screen time, much more than I'd expected, but feels purposeful and at-home, where Anthony Mackie's equal turn as Falcon seems forced and irrelevant. Of course, Chris Evans is vanilla but strong in the leading role and Sebastian Stan is appropriately cool-looking, if slightly under-explored, as his momentary nemesis the Winter Soldier. They probably should've kept the mask on longer, though; he seems far less menacing and visually striking without.
I'm really struggling to understand why this didn't feel more substantial than it did. Even Cap's most appealing personality quirk - his disconnection from the trappings of modern society - gets little more than a cursory glance. Good but middle-of-the-pack in the Marvel family.
cute corny but I liked it
A superior entry in the Avengers canon.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an ambitious and exciting film that takes on controversial real-world issues. Addressing the theme of security vs. freedom, the plot follows Steve Rogers as he investigates a possible cabal within SHIELD that's responsible for the assassination of Nick Fury. Starring Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, and Emily VanCamp, the casting is especially good and features some very strong performances. The special effects are also incredibly well-done and add an extra level of energy and intensity to the action sequences. Yet as strong an action film as Captain America: The Winter Soldier is, it makes some radical changes to the Avenger series and leaves it in an awkward place.
This movie gets more and more interesting with each watch, there's so many underlying themes, there's so much to interpret and think about. All the twists and turns. Absolutely brilliant. I upped it from an 8 to a 9 the last time I watched it, and this time i'm giving it a full 10. I'm obsessed.
10/10
The Russo brothers came out swinging.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an entertaining, tightly directed, brilliantly acted, fast paced and well edited action film that just so happens to be a squeal to the First Avenger. Many of the best moments in the franchise are in this film including the elevator scene and the fight on the bridge, this film also has great character interactions especially with Steve Rodgers and Nick Fury. This feels like an update on classic James Bond stories with a modern edge, this is everything that a comic book movie could be and I highly recommend checking it out again if you haven’t seen it in a while. There is no question that The Winter Soldier is the best of the MCU.
The directors Anthony and Joe Russo are already finishing their fourth Marvel film. But we haven't forgotten their first one yet. With Winter Soldier they have a very strong debut. After Iron Man and The Avengers, we get another high quality superhero film! Thanks bro's!
The film immediately kicks off with an introduction. Not from Captain Rogers, because we already got it in The First Avenger, but from The Falcon. I admit that I also found Cap's intro very decent, especially compared to the rest of that movie. But how they execute the introductions in this sequel, I'll take off my hat for that! Firstly, it is immediately clear that Steve is not quite up to date with modern times. The idea of a guy who was on ice for 70 years and suddenly has a whole arsenal of pop culture at his disposal, can indeed be frightening. But Sam "Falcon" Wilson helps him out, and that quickly forms a basis for the friendship between the two. After that we get an introduction of Black Widow and Nick Fury and that means we are immediately on board in a few minutes. And the good thing is that the pace of the film is not disturbed a single time. The biggest praise to the screenwriters.
The overall tone of this film is much less humorous than any other of the series, but that doesn't bother me at all. It's an excellent conspiracy-action thriller. The story-telling with the different plot twists is very good. And this forms a good basis for what the Russo Brothers will do with this universe. I love how the character Winter Soldier/Bucky was presented, especially the relationship between Cap and Bucky is very convincing. The relationship between Cap and Black Widow, on the other hand, I think is cringy and superfluous, but that might be the only downside.
Besides Bucky we get to see some other familiar faces. The moment with Peggy Carter, for example, was very enjoyable. But especially the revelation of mad dr. Zola was brilliant. And (major spoiler) Agent Sitwell has been exposed as a mole, but also tells us casually that they already have Stephen Strange on their radar. But more about Doctor Strange will follow in Phase 3 of course.
Finally I would like to say that I am a fan of the gravestone of Nicholas J. Fury.
This was so important you’d think it was an Avengers film. The action in this was amazing and bucky had no chill tearing out that steering wheel.
Great movie. This has a strong and complex plot - S.H.I.E.L.D / Hydra. Nice meld with TV series. Great cast with great performances. Great relationships and character development. Nice backstories for the new additions. Great villains, Robert Redford in an unusual role, but always a solid choice, and the twist with the Winter Soldier, although a bit predictable, mined the heart of the story. Even on a rewatch, I give this film an 8 (great) out of 10. [Superhero Action Adventure]
Everything has its other side of the coin, the second bottom... or is simply two-faced. ;>
Good! Interesting film. No forget watch the final...
captain America movies are so ambiguous
I actually enjoyed this superhero movie!! Lately I don't like to watch superhero movies a lot but decided to give this one a try. Surprisingly I liked this one. Maybe its the overall story, action and direction which kind of seem to lack lately in the movies released. I would recommend this to most of my friends.
The first was so and so, the second only so
It is a really good movie i am inpressed THE special effects are great.
IT is a good movie i al inpressed
A wonderful thriller, conspiracy and adventure that delivers a great great film.
This was THE Marvel movie, not even Avengers 1 & 2 could top this masterpiece, easily the best Marvel movie produced up till now.
The fights between Captain America and Winter Soldier are amongst my favorites ever!
I won't say too much and give anything away, but in the situation going on in this movie, don't you think that another Avenger or two might have showed up to help out? At least Iron Man since he contributed to the problem.
HAIL HYDRA!
now, you know...
Shockingly rubbish, terrible dialogue, boring effects and silly unbelievable story.
Not bad, but waay to predictable.
Not too shabby. I liked it.
:)como veo la pelicula no puedo ver
best movie I've seen lately
This is one of the best
A good sequel to a mediocre first film. This movie can easily compare with Avengers in terms of action and suspense.
It is very disappointing that this film along with all the others that make up 'Phase 2' of Marvel's film universe, seem deliberately underwhelming. And why not? A film featuring a singular hero dare not exceed an Avengers title in terms of success.
This film is unnecessarily strung out to a rather arduous 2 hours and 15 minutes, when it clearly could have shorter.
There are only really two bits of important information to take away from the narrative also when piecing it together as part of the bigger picture which is the next Avengers film and for those who've seen this film, it should be blatantly obvious.
Ultimately, something a narrative so basic needs a film this long to put forward. And I'm sure that with all the usual action and stunts, the film can be made shorter, more interesting and try at least not hold back as much when it comes to matching the Avengers titles.
I loved this one more then the first Captain America
great movie i am not a critic just like to be entertained
Was really great! I like all the movies from marvel and stuff...
Esperamos la tercera parte!
Amazing movie, one of Marvel's best so far.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier was boss, if misnamed. I felt like I was the only one laughing at the understated humor sometimes. And I don't understand people who get up the minute credits start rolling on a Marvel film. I mean, if they're watching the Captain America sequel, they've been to a Marvel movie before. They should know the drill.
Awesome stuff! Almost as good as Avengers.
Doesn't drown in too much action. Story makes sense and there is time to assimilate what is going on. It doesn't start in an action scene where you don't know what is going on, that's even better.
It's easily the best superhero movie so far. Good intro to Falcon and Sharon and there is a lead in to the next movie/s....
Go on and watch it in 3d. I did. The theatre at Embassy Complex in Valletta had some problems with flickering, and I told the staff during the intermission. As a result they gave me a free ticket! Really must say these people are excellent and worth supporting.
I loved this movie. All the action stuff looked great, but throw enough money at a movie and that isn't hard.
The real charm of the movie was the way they tied in a lot of comic book themes and characters, but still kept everything grounded. I believed that somehow a dude can have a perfectly working robot arm that is better than a real arm, but was still excited to see Cappy beat up an elevator full of dudes. I even liked all the heavy handed "surveillance state" political stuff.
Captain America 2: Captain of America, highly recommended.
Great action movie. Captain America: First Avenger was totally crap, but this was a totally different level action movie and very enjoyable.
Btw, didnt anyone notice "The Path Of The Righteous Man" ?
I enjoyed the references to other movies a lot and its great to see how the story of the different Marvel movies is starting to link in more and more.
Of course it was not a perfect movie, but I totally second CatyAlexandre statement.
Great fun! Very good intrigue and pageantry. On the plus side the supporting cast.
Could've elaborate further on Falcon and how the SHIELD people still believe on the Capt. Other than that, good movie. The after-credits is interesting as always.
Excellent and remember stay until the VERY end.
It took 10 years but finally there is a superhero movie that tops SpiderMan 2.

This is one of the best movies the MCU has to offer. The story was not your typical superhero must fight a cartoonish villain which is a great change of pace. It's grounded to make it more believable. Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson have great chemistry together. This is where Black Widow really starts to shine as a character, she was just fine in The Avengers and Iron Man 2. Anthony Mackie and Sam Jackson are both really good too. Sebastian Stan as the Winter Solider is a great "villain" so much better than an alien trying to take over the world. The action is great, the Russo brothers have that on lock. The movie just flows really well and never drags.
