05/10.
Al Capone Coughs. Groans. Shits the bed. Coughs. Groans.
What a waste of Tom Hardy's talent. What a waste of Kyle MacLachlan's talent. What a waste of a beautiful cinematography.
This could have been way better. All the components were there. But this just doesn't work.
Skip it - was intrigued with the idea of the movie but this fell short.
I read so many negative things about this movie before watching it that my expectations were really low. I did not find it boring, for what it's worth. I understood what were the director's intentions. I think people were expecting something like The Untouchables.
Suuuuuper slow so be ready.
They have Tom Hardy in so much makeup he looks like he’s wearing someone else’s skin over his own. I assumed they had aged him up so they could show him looking normal in flashbacks- nope. They really spent the whole movie following around a pooping, groaning, dementia patient.
This is final days of a difficult man... Its scary to loose your mind, to see things, hurt your family etc... Its a extremely scary movie if u shut the fuck up, and let your self dive in to the movie... But most of u want a gunshots explosions etc... no.. this movie offers a kid with a balloon and a platypus!!!!
I loved it. I thought it portrayed dementia very well. So much so that the viewer is never really sure which parts are memories and which are hallucinations until practically the very end.
I agree that this film is not very good. But it has certainly a bold idea at it's core. That obviously doesn't make a good film though.
I really liked the way that Trank relentlessly deconstructed this mafia figure to the point, where he even took him the cigar and replaced it with a carrot .
The film overall felt just like Capones' physical situation, which creates a problem. When you choose to let the overall form of the film mimic the basic idea, which is the pointlessness of Capones' existence and powerlessness in his situation, the film becomes pointless and powerless in itself. It's the same problem with boredom in film. Mostly boredom is conveyed in an entertaining way, which disconnects the audience from the real feeling of the character in that moment. We feel entertained, the character feels bored. I think there's gotta be a balance which this film unfortunately doesn't really have.
Maybe the film should have been told from a different point of view, to convey the real emotions of another main character through the form. But that's just a quick idea.
I hope Trank gets to make other films. I don't like the hate he receives basically just because of Fantastic Four.
I liked the boldness of the idea, even though it wasn't really successful unfortunately. But I'd rather watch bold ideas not succeed, instead of average/lame ones succeed.
I love me some Tom Hardy. However, he doesn't even look like Al Capone! I think I'll pass on this one. The ratings aren't high enough for me. :flushed:
I paused the movie after 15 minutes because I just couldn’t believe this is a real film. Hair and makeup looks horrible.
Tom Hardy is not fit for the role of Al Capone, he's not a convincing Italian. His performance is so over the top, so cartoonish, it's just straight up uncomfortable to watch. He has this terrible accent that was apparently based on Bugs Bunny. Such an absurd performance that if Tom Hardy wasn’t Tom Hardy this could be a career ending performance. And I totally get why they cast him with the severe shortage of overweight, balding actors who actually can speak Italian.
It's a novel choice to focus on what was the least eventful and iconic year of Capone's life, and to not adhere to traditional biopic cliches, but the charm of that decision stops at the decision itself. If you want to tell a story about dementia, I'm sure there are better ways to do it.
I don't know what Tom Hardy is doing wasting his time with this crap. It's boring and gross.
Amazing awful. Fully crap. How its possible, Tom ??
Al Capone with diapers and a carrot in his mouth. Is this a comedy? Not at all. Josh Trank has made a weird, crazy, sometimes chaotic movie. But isn't that the mind of a mentally ill person like Al Capone was in his late years? Tom Hardy looks like Marlon Brando in "Apocalypse Now". His work is between caricature and genius. Shit. Blood. Saliva. Paranoia. Ingredients for a singular film.
Capone isn’t near as bad as what I thought it would be buts it’s still pretty bad. I had a strong feeling Capone would be bad but I was still very excited for it. I can’t say It disappointed me because I knew what was being brought to the table. The plot is fine it’s a different kind of al Capone story focusing on the last year of his life. The second act drags and the movie just feels relatively slow the whole time. Since this movie mainly focuses on capones dementia it lets off a depressing tone that is carried out. The acting is not that good it’s a good cast but wasted. Tom Hardy is a great actor but he gives a pretty bad performance. It’s just grunts and poops with a few words ever so often, he shows no emotion in this role. I appreciate Josh Tranks vision and style and his direction is alright. The cinematography is pretty good there’s a few beautiful shots. Overall Capone is a bad movie that could have been great.
(5 out of 10)
The film covers Capone's final year, and mostly it comes across as a sad and depressing view of dementia. The most obvious statement on Capone's loss of power, comes in the form of a metaphor, as his beloved "Lady Atlas" garden statue is removed to be sold off. There is also a recurring moment where Capone tunes the radio to a broadcast of the Saint Valentines' Day Massacre, and family time at Thanksgiving is nothing short of painful to watch. Cinematographer Peter Deming gives us a well shot film, but despite a couple of David Lynch-type moments, the film mostly lacks entertainment value. I can't figure out who might want to watch this. Trank seemed to go the deeply artistic route on a subject that's tough to watch. Maybe he'll get yet another shot.
I was excited to see Capone, but unfortunately, my excitement rapidly dissipated as the film progressed. While it features a strong lead performance by Tom Hardy, the movie ultimately falls short in delivering a cohesive and engaging storyline. As a result, Capone is a disappointing film that fails to live up to expectations, especially considering the talent involved. If you're a fan of Tom Hardy, you may still find something to enjoy in his performance, but overall, it's hard to recommend this film to others.
Did Capone kill or hurt Josh Trank's grandparents? Because making a biopic of a famous figure in history is not new, but I have never seen a biopic that humiliates someone into the butt of the joke, I cannot help but think there is some bad blood.
The infamous ‘Scarface’ shits himself multiple times, one time in bed with his wife (played by Linda Cardellini), where she's stained in his human feces. At one point, his iconic cigars get replaced by carrots as a strict diet for his already decaying health. So now he looks like a frosty bloated penguin.
Capone disintegrates before our eyes as he is diagnosed with Syphilis (in real life as well), and yet, for whatever reason, the filmmakers made him look like a guy who's slowly turning into a zombie. The veins in his eyes are bright red, his skin looks crusty and pale, and at times he stares at people as if he’s about to pounce. Capone looks horrible—I expected him to jump up and bite someone any minute. Then again, this might be what he may have looked like in real life during that period, so this might be accurate. However, I can only assume with a sense of doubt.
Hey guys, Capone isn't feeling too good.
'Capone' is the third feature film by Josh Trank, and I am losing hope for him as a director. Like Neill Blomkamp.
Tom Hardy’s transformation as the infamous Al Capone was... an interesting choice if I must say. He sh*ts the bed, and while that might sound like a joke, trust me, it is true. It feels like a joke. Hardy screams like Danny Devito's Penguin. He is a paranoid loose cannon who often forgets himself and the people are him.
Some scenes in this movie that wasn’t made clear. For example, due to poor health, Capone starts to hallucinate people from his past and specific events that are not real. Throughout most of the movie, Capone is in the company of a good friend while at his property until we find out they have been dead the whole time and are only a figment part of his imagination. It was sloppy and made no sense since we have scenes with this friend where Capone is not present, so I guess he’s hallucinating.
Overall rating: Riah Johnson was right when he described this movie as bonkers!
This was horrible. I'm sorry I gave this a chance but this was not worth watching. .
Capone, at it's core, is about a man struggling with dementia, done so poorly it's embarrassing.
if you want to watch it done amazingly well, try The Father https://trakt.tv/movies/the-father-2020
'Capone' disappoints.
It's not what I was expecting. I hadn't heard much about it admittedly, but I was anticipating a full blown film about Al Capone - especially with the casting of Tom Hardy. That's not a bad thing in isolation, at all, but coupled with iffy storytelling it ends up being a waste.
Hardy (Al) is undoubtedly the best thing about this, yet I still think he had way more in him for this sort of role - if the filmmakers had allowed him to use it, of course. There aren't any standouts behind Hardy, though Linda Cardellini (Mae) and Kyle MacLachlan (Karlock) are OK.
There's nothing I massively dislike about this, I just wanted so much more from it. It is, I will say, at least a film that makes you think - I just don't, personally, think it came out as perhaps intended.
People are very critical of this movie but it's not as disastrous as some are saying. After the disappointing Fantastic Four, there is now a backlash against the director, and this is a little unfair. Sure, the movie isn't a classic, and it's a long way from Trank's brilliant debut feature, Chronicle, but it's still very watchable. Hardy loses himself in the role and it's his performance that gives the film a little credibility. So long as you don't expect a sequel to The Untouchables, you might like this more than you're expecting.
Fairly bleeding :poop:alright.103 mins I.ll never get back
Hilariously bad, Tom Hardy in makeup looks like Pete Davidson and talks like the Danny Devito Penguin
Disappointing. Couldn't be saved by the good acting of Tom Hardy.
I got about 15 mins in and realised I couldn't be bothered
Awful, just nothing better to say than awful.
If you wanna watch this just enjoy the acting of Tom, otherwise nothing worth to mention.

Josh Trank, if you’re reading this, never write or direct another fucking movie in your life.
