This is definitely not a movie for everyone (most people?), but it is definitely a movie for me — I loved this thing. The voice over/humor is hit or miss, but I did not find it annoying, and I often found it funny. The action sequences are phenomenal, but the editing is chaotic and often handheld-like. The story and characters are just a means to drive the movie forward, and to go from one set-piece to the next, often building and expanding in ridiculousness. The end fight had some absolutely visceral moments. A lot of the action is so over the top that I just laughed and had a great time. Not the last fight. That thing is a drag out, dirty, amazing piece of choreography.
Bad score/needle drops. The music did not fit a lot of the scenes.
Far Cry the Movie cross Guns Akimb and with Archer voice over. I can see Kung Furry, Mad Heidi and Iron Sky on it aswell.
I really liked it.
The fight choreography is insanely good. The shaman and the stunt double are excellent martial artists and their skill is obvious. Every fight is so packed with interesting details that I watched all the fight scenes frame-by-frame. The main actor clearly trained with the shaman in real life. I'd describe the movie as Ong Bok meets Hardcore Henry.
Unfortunately it bombed opening weekend, making only $3M from a $18M budget, but has the potential to be a classic.
Brutal, entertaining and very funny, a movie that develops well, despite the story being simple and even predictable. The performances are great, especially the development of the main character, whose narration is very funny. The action scenes are really incredible, brutal and very cool, you can't help but get caught up in the movie.
Boy Kills World (2024) - :heart:x7
Dang - Bill Skaarsgard is very ripped these days.
I'm still wavering on the narration and the choice of using H. Jon Benjamin for the voice - I couldn't help but hear all his animated characters - but ultimately I think it worked.
WTW?!? A Brass Knuckle Gun?? - Awesome!! And lastly, he final fight was pretty spectacular.
Overall, this is a fun action/kill-em-all kinda movie. You just need to sit back, relax, and watch it happen.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
Benny’s dialogue is laugh out loud funny.
Straight into one of my favourite films. As good as either Deadpool if you enjoyed them you got to see this.
This is the test... of your abilities... to suspend disbelief. The reward is the glee of fighting action flicks. A logical progeny of:
What else did I miss?
The, "twist," of Mom having twisted herself even further towards evil over the loss of her son... wow. We had to feel for her.
The sister rediscovering her brother was intact as he gave her the five finger salute. That glee almost matched the fight sequences. That was the climax for me.
And, that closing shot, where the joy drains from the faces of the siblings over a bowl of their favorite breakfast cerial...? Wow - that denouement was some sort of counter-climax; you just know their life will be shit going forward
While the fights themselves are good, they do drag on a bit too long at regular moments throughout the movie. Injuries don't seem to have any ongoing consequence for more than about 5 seconds. It's as though they shot a lot of the action such that they could mix up the order of scenes in post. They also just swap and change between who is the dominant fighter and who is the lesser fighter for what seems like shits and giggles. Just to protract the fight, nothing more. There's no reason for who has the upper hand changing as most action and fight movies seem to do (including what should be ongoing injuries but somehow even stop bleeding when they really should have bled out). All of these just seriously take away from what ultimately is good fight choreography.
Having Andrew Koji mostly with guns is a waste of that actor's fighting skills as seen in the TV show Warrior.
As for the plot, it's an action comedy. It doesn't need to be good nor solid. Don't overthink it.
Ultimately, cutting a few minutes out here and there would have helped, as would more intent behind injuries & reasons for fight balance changing.
I see comparisons to “John Wick” and “The Raid,” but it really isn’t like either of those films. A more appropriate comparison would be films like “Kick Ass,” “Shoot Em Up,” and “Crank.” Hyper-violent films with a juvenile sense of humor that seem to be written exclusively for the sixteen year old boys in the audience. If that sounds like your cup of tea I highly recommend “Boy Kills World.”
Also, The Shaman should have won.
Like hot sauce that's too hot, the aggressiveness is so strong it covers the taste of everything else.
This video game action flick about a young man exacting revenge on dystopian rulers has so much repetitive video game action that the rest of the movie becomes little more than a static background in a classic platformer game.
Amazing action scenes, great plot twist
A little Kill Bill, a little Scott Pilgrim, a little Repo. The movie is one long fight sequence. A lot of fun.
Very fast, very violent. Enjoyed the twist though I should have seen it coming . Very arcade game type feel.
Haven't seen it.... [edit: saw it may 21 - https://trakt.tv/comments/676690 ]
Can't wait tho (Pennywise voiced by Archer, Andrew Koji, Sharlto, bunches of others)...oh, man!
Though, from reviews of, "Oderbruch," on IMDb, my expectations are... not high.
Theatrical release 4/26
Not my kind of movie, but this is a MUST WATCH.
This would be a fun, slightly surreal little B-movie, if they wouldn't go so hard on the torture porn in the fights. A baffling amount of gore and violence.
Film 175 of 2024:
Boy Kills World is the latest in a recent explosion of revenge, vengeance tales since the John Wick saga. Boy Kills World tries to differentiate itself from the pack, by melding the hyper violence with humour. The writer also chooses to implement an element of video games, potentially a nod to Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Boy Kills World mainly gets by due to it's lead, Bill Skarsgård. Bill, playing a mute character, a growing trend in recent films, does a lot with very little. This lack of audio is contrasted by having one of the premier voice actors of the last few years, H. Jon Benjamin (known for his deep distinct voice) providing the internal thoughts of Bill's character. These voice overs are often humorous. In conjunction with the voiceovers, Bill's character sees a vision, that he often corresponds with. I'd argue the voice over / inner monologue goes close to derailing the focus of the film.
The major supporting leads are Sharlto Copley and Famke Janssen. Janssen despite being the film's major antagonist, is rarely on screen. The film also rarely spends time establishing the power of the Van Der Koys, the ruling family of this totalitarian society. One of the biggest flaws of this film is that for an overarching totalitarian society, the film constantly makes the world seem very small, and the Van Der Koys, no bigger than a powerful family in a small town. Speaking of the Van Der Koys, Famke Janssen especially is God awful - never known for her great acting, gives a lifeless performance when she finally does enter the film.
The film loses it's way in the 3rd act, becoming bogged down in reveals and heavy exposition. It's not until a fantastic fight scene in the climax of the film, does the film find it's footing again. The film sells itself on creative fight scenes, something that is becoming more common in these vengeance films. There's some great choices here, a particular kitchen item standing out, but these moments are fleeting. The story that connects these scenes paper thin. And unfortunately the total package is lacking.
Annoying, cringe, over-the-top and violent. Clearly inspired by The Raid, in fact it pretty much is The Raid in terms of concept but they add flawed character development and a generic story to slow down the action and make it a 2h movie.
The action sequences are expertly choreographed, super bloody and intense. The camerawork is terrible though during the fight scenes (worse than Monkey Man) and everything is overly edited. Bad song/score choices. The narration is by far the most annoying thing about this and the reason why this shouldn't be watched in a theater (it'll give you a headache). Add some hyperactive characters that talk loud and act cocky and you have yourself a very annoying movie.
The movie kinda works when Michelle Dockery or Brett Gelman are on-screen (they're funny and actually good actors) but the rest of the time it's just cringe. I like Bill Skarsgård and he did nail every choreography move here but this is not a role for him. Eccentric characters that talk are his thing, this was just cringe and embarassing.
The twist is so silly and over-the-top that I actually found it fitted perfectly with the rest. The cheese grater is probably my favorite moment but the final fight with Mad Dog was epic... if you want to see an even better one, go watch The Raid.
A fun and gory comedy action flick with a mid story. The John Wickification of action films has worked and now they show all the hits and the punches. The story is really short, like one mission in a RPG game. But the twist is really odd and under-explained.
What is great is the action choreo, Bill's performance as a silent yet vocal character, and the fight cinematography. It's fun but it's not a great film for more than one viewing. The story falls apart.

This movie answers the age-old question "what if we mashed up The Finals, The Hunger Games, and John Wick?"
