Leslie Mann has top billing. Then Ike Barinholtz. Yeah, they are both funny...but John Cena STEALS this movie. STEALS. Pretty much this is the movie you expect as a raunchy comedy. It's funny and I laughed out loud a few times. Worth catching. 7/10
Funny at times but overall it's a bit disappointing really. It's hard to empathise with the message of a movie that's about how the parents have underestimated the maturity of their children, and need to give them some free reign. Meanwhile, the film keeps undermining this message. For example, at times we see one of these "mature" girls experimenting with drugs without really taking any time to consider what she's putting in her body or why.
I really enjoyed this comedy. Something different for a change.

Day 10:
High school movies tend to be one of my least favourite subgeners but even I can appreciate a well written comedy.
This isn't quite at the level of Superbad or booksmart but it does offer some laugh out loud moments and even plays of the heart strings a little by the end. Sure some jokes go on too long and parts of the finale can feel forced but overall this was surprisingly good.

Not the worst offense of the year, but nothing we haven't seen before. Only this time, thrown in some more lecturing and dated humor. The amount of vulgarity expressed in the movie is to be expected, and it will please some crowds just of how up-front it is, but it wears thin. The biggest compliment I can give Blockers is it really trudges ahead to make likable characters. Ike Barinholtz is a funny dude, Leslie Mann really tries her all, but whenever a "dramatic" moment was happening, I couldn't take it seriously. It's a comedy, yes, but the fake tears and arguments about gender politics just came across as hamfisted and :sleepy::zzz:. At least Kay Cannon has done her research about the internet. To all my 4chan anons reading this, there's a character in this movie named Chad, who wears a fedora, owns a samurai, and eats Cheetos.
it was a cool movie lol john cena was funny, those three are amazing together!
I started watching this movie without knowing really what to expect and I was actually pretty surprised. It's really good. John Cena, Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz really did a great job, performance-wise! Fun movie. I recommend it.
Hilarious movie. Man that Ike Barinholtz is my favorite part of anything he's in.
This may look like a terrible movie but it's actually pretty good. It's funny and not all of it is stupid humor. The acting all around is great. John Cena is a standout here, I can see him having a real long comedy career. It has interesting and fleshed out characters and best of all it has a wonderful story with a good message. Kay Cannon has a winner for her directorial debut.
Really enjoyed this new comedy. I had really high expectations for it, especially after hearing all the positive buzz on it after SXSW and watching the hilarious trailers. However, if you are thinking about watching this movie, DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER/S and go into this clean. You'll enjoy the movie and jokes much more. They really used up some of the best jokes and moments in the movie to make the trailers (which were epic) and getting those parts spoiled is not the best way to enjoy a new comedy.
Cheesy at times but It made me laugh and had a good message.
The jokes are repeated throughout the film. The trailer is the summary of the best jokes; complet spoiler. The only scene that I liked is the one that John Cena is looking out the window and sees fucking the couple. Finally, when the girl tells her father that she is a lesbian, the father is surprised, instead of saying "I already knew". However, he says he already knew it.
this just further proves that literally anything - including raunchy sex-centric comedies - is better if it's done with women <3
After 3 years of my mate telling me to watch this movie, I'm finally drunk enough to say fuck it... I'll watch it. Lisa Decker looks amazing in that skaterskirt and jacket let me just get that out the way. John Cena is so funny but what I didn't expect is Ike Barinholtz to deliver the emotional connection. He's the only one in tune with his daughter. Very enjoyable.
I was very surprised at how much I actually enjoyed this movie. Had a good laugh!
pretty swag. exactly what i wanted going into the theaters. and more!! one of the first comedies i’ve seen with actually good lesbian representation that isn’t at anyone’s expense! totally weird that one of the dads was invisible though.
Blockers’ is your usual American comedy with heavy drinking, sex, and crude slapstick throughout. However, at the very core of the movie, it has heart and some tender moments, which surprised me the most.
John Cena plays the hunky father who is soft at heart. So soft in fact that he would not hurt a fly, because he will probably be afraid of it. It is a nice change of pace from the other roles he has played in the past.
First time I've ever seen CGI tears, or at least noticed that they wasn't real, the vomit scene was also a class act of poorly made CGI and the scene itself was completely unnecessary and kind of took the movie to an OK one (6) to a not so OK one (4) since it went downhill from there.
Liked Geraldine Viswanathan, so gonna have to take a look at what else she has done.
Teen comedy of the second decade of the twentieth-one century where, in the midst of alcohol and sex jokes, many politically correct dialogues sneak in. Of course, the real irresponsible are the parents
all characters are unlikable. annoying parents and teens. very unrealistic. funny at times but mostly just frustrating.
I was expecting not to like this movie but still watched out of curiosity. Well it's nothing deep for sure, but it managed to go without fart jokes and that type of low humor, so better than expected. Overall quite entertaining light comedy.
I love how well portrayed Sam's character was.
Hard sides of parenthood in XXI century. If you know less, you live peacefully longer ;)
I didn't go into this expecting much, and I wasn't disappointed. It starts with a panty joke that's stolen from somewhere, though I can't remember where. Then it moves through a whole bunch of teen movie tropes. It takes a few decent spins and a few not so great attempts at humor. Don't get me wrong! It's a lot of fun. The cast works pretty well together and they manage to have a lot of great moments. Ike Barinholtz shines par usual. Gotta love that guy. Definitely worth a watch when you're looking for a movie and you don't want to think too much.
The script needed a little extra work - the film is fairly scrappy and predictable - but it doesn't entirely block the humorous playing of the talented cast.
Lowbrow comedy with few good jokes and positive vibe.
Good comedy to watch. I still hoped the third wheel would have a better place between friendship. But overall very good comedy. Better than american pie actually. More funny.
Surprisingly good. It was fresh and fun seeing a teen sex comedy from the girls perspective. The parents all had some great chemistry and some genuinely funny moments. John Cena should stick to comedy.
Blockers is a film in which an ex-wrestler shoves a tube up his anus to chug a 40, but also manages to move the audience moments later. Job well done. The movie show teenage girls who define their own boundaries and teenage boys who listen to them.
The prettiest girl from Blockers - the one with the high-cut blouse - knows how her first time should look like. With her handsome boyfriend, on the evening of prom, with rose-petals on bed, her favorite candle next to them. Because that, makes her horny as fuck.
Which is funny on it's own, because in teenager movies the main female roles shouldn't be excited or thrilled about sex - they should be afraid, nervous and keep their mouths shut about it. In Blockers, the opposite happens; three teenage girls concluce a #sexpact for the prom. They want to lose their virginity for various reasons. This is, however, kept a secret from their parents, who manage to decipher intercepted millenial emoji speak filled with eggplant emojis, and decide to stop their daughters.
Blockers feels like a mix of two films, a girls version of American Pie (1999) and a kind of.. Neighbors (2014), from the perspective of teenager parents. The premise itself is hypocritical. After all, if it had involved boys, their parents probably wouldn't have bothered. Moreover, their intention is rather pointless, just before the girls leave for the sodom and gomorrah that is called university. A few clever jokes emphasize that double standard.
It could and should've been the recipe for a delicious (yet faint) comedy, but a lot gets lost in the execution. With Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz and John Cena there's enough talent in the house, but Cena's jokes about being a big, strong sports fanatic who cares too much with his little heart and cries all the time is sometimes funny, but writer and debuting director Kay Cannon (author of the Pitch Perfect trilogy) repeats the joke too often, killing it instantly. At other times, the timing is off, which in itself makes little dialogue and situations just not their best. The whole situation and jokes around Leslie Mann's car, in which Barinholtz tries to stop the plot, was undoubtedly a lot of fun on paper, but in the film it just does not get off the ground and wastes a lot of time in the movie. While the cast is no doubt talented, Mann, Barinholtz and Cena have zero chemistry, which shows. Which means that the emotional moments they have together do not bear any intended results for the audience. Barinholtz' delivered great comedic performances, which unfortunaly got overshadowed by the rest of the paren-trio's not so funny moments and lack of chemistry. In the meantime, it is mainly the teenagers who occasionally have the best dialogues of the film, besides the actually hilarious Hannibal Buress, who unfortunately only participates in two scenes. "Newcomers' Geraldine Viswanathan and Gildeon Adion seem very promising and definitely have the best scenes and interactions of the movie. Because the attention of the film is divided equally between teenagers and parents, those teens never get the chance to be as funny as those, for example, in Superbad. The sixfold emotional denouement (three times or not defloration plus three times confrontation with parents) is doesn't entirely work out either. This is suddenly sentimental scene after sentimantal scene, without sufficient emotional connection.
Blockers has compassion for the rumbling of the protagonists and shows a world in which color and sexual orientation are not problems and in which women are curious about sex without being portrayed as a slut. The film shows teenage girls who define their own boundaries and teenage boys who listen to them. It may all sound politically correct, it's not less risky. There are - among other things - pounding bare buttocks against a window, groped and dangling ballsacks, full bare penis shots and uncomfortable (unintended) eye contact during orgasm. There are a number of successful jokes that make the film fun. The ode to Jurassic Park in the middle of a bizarre sex game is better than whole of Jurassic World and The Fallen Kingdom together.
6.3/10
I had high hopes for this one but it was just ok.
Equal parts hilarious and sentimental. It's nice that the teens are the rational ones. John Cena is awesome.
