It's not because your lead actress is amazing that your film is, too.
Aubrey Plaza owns her role like a used tattoo and turns in what will probably be my favorite performance by an actress in 2020, but all of that is sucked into the void that is this film.
Watching a director who's married to an actress make a movie about a director's dysfunctional relationship with an actress doesn't feel like watching a movie to me. It feels like I'm watching a stranger's therapy and that's a lot less interesting than I would've thought.
To those who are confused: The film is about writer's block. There are two parts, both her attempts in the movie she is writing in her book.
The first story she wrote ends when she sees a bear and gets into an accident. The second part is also her story, which is a variation of her first story but it's more intricate. Once her character stumbles in on husband having an affair, she sees a bear which symbolises the end of second story like before.
The bear is her metaphor for writer's block. Hence the title "The Black Bear".
part one was amazing, so awkward yet hilariously funny. this was well on the way to becoming one of my favourites of the year.
but then part two happened....
Ha? ? I understood nothing. Obviously not the drama I was looking for.
Agree with others that there was probably a good movie in here that just didn't quite manage to make its way out. Great performances from all, but unfortunately they couldn't overcome the script which never fully managed to connect for me.
Another classic example of the parts being better than whole. I wanted to love this movie but I just couldn't get there. Sure, the acting is fantastic and Aubrey Plaza is a revelation (I have been a fan going back to Safety Not Guaranteed). The first half was very good and during the first few minutes of the second part of the movie it looked like it was on an even better trajectory. But the it just started to meander. I loved the idea of the two different story lines going on at the same time but it seemed as if the director didn't know how to bring it home. There was a better movie in there, I think.

why was Cahya repeatedly putting the cup of M&Ms into Gabe's hand before realizing he wanted her to pour the M&Ms into his hand so damn funny
Aubrey Plaza is terrific in this!
'Black Bear' is intriguing from beginning to end. I did find the first half to be the stronger and most interesting part, though the conclusion is still fairly captivating all the same. As noted, Plaza is excellent throughout - she carries the film, no doubt. Christopher Abbott has a few moments, while it's neat to see 'The Walking Dead' newcomer Paola Lázaro involved.
Certainly different and not what I was expecting. Is it any good? It kind of is but perhaps a little too clever for its own good.
Aubrey Plaza was amazing, the movie was not.
Um, Part 2 > Part 1
Looking to watch a movie with no reward and a big ol WTF at ALL of it?? This is the gem for you!
The longer you watch this movie the worst it gets. Aubrey Plaza's worst movie, please stick to comedy.
I liked the acting and the shift from part 1 to 2. Brain mixer. Some was lacking and I'm not surprised this is so divisive. Worth the watch for me even if a bunch fell flat. 6.3
Unique movie. Loved the concept the segments of the movie. Great cast. Unexpected twist. I went into not knowing anything about the movie suprised me well. First it seemed like an other boring indie movie about some lil drama ( typical 60% voted on trakt) but turned out way better. I am glad that I saw this movie. Go watch it!
Minute One .. Aubrey Plaza in a bathing suit ... ok ya I will watch this movie closely
Minute Six ... Sarah Gadon taking out the garbage ... ok ya I will marry this movie
Minute 17 ... I want to murder the person who wrote the dialog
Aubrey Plaza gave one of the best performances of 2020 in this movie, but the script is way too pretentious and ambiguous, too bad
what's not clicking? what's not clicking?
similar to ozon's swimming pool which is a way better movie but i like this one too. i think the director also loves "who's afraid of virginia woolf" but the writing is not at that level. kinda wanted another chapter for the flood but loved aubrey's performance. also you can't trust anything and nothing is real.
i think this is one of my favourite movies of 2020. i mean is it really a movie, or is it a fucking masterpiece?
Boring movie i dont recommend to watxh it

Amazing Aubrey Plaza performance. Overall did not come together for me. I was really intrigued during the first half and that arc was left unresolved. Probably the best part was seeing indie-filmmaking in action. I was not emotionally invested in any of the character's outcomes in part 2.

This is a very unique experience and one that leaves you with so many thoughts and questions for sure !
The main star of the movie is Aubrey Plaza, she gives a great performance , her two co stars also were good acting wise.
Watching the movie the first part i was invested in the fight in the cabin brought some good subjects to talk about as we see themes of infidelity , feminism ...
The second part was even more great , you get to see how an indie film is made behind the scenes , that was cool but the surprise was that the actors were the same from the first part but in another set of action and completly different roles , but the same elements in the first part are brought up in here in kind of reverse way ( Gabe's affair with Clair instead of Allison in the first part, Allison is the one broken with emotions instead of Clair in the first part )
Now what does that mean , i think my understanding is Allison is geeting up from the dock and going to the cabin and sitting next to her journal to write : the two parts were essentially a movie she's writing to express her emotions and what she feels in real life and writes to scenarios with the same actors but different roles to express them , she has issues from her past and writing about them to make a movie and express them is what we see
The bear thought at the end i don't know what that means , like i said it leaves you with questions and theories explaining what was going on .
