A strange mix of over-the-top melodrama and campy silliness, it's surprising to me that this movie has been received so well and taken so seriously. There isn't much to think about: the themes of the changing relationship between church and state, racial / national tensions, friendship vs 'duty', etc, are all very superficially treated and not at all serious.
It's a sort of fun movie to laugh at, but drags on much too long to have much merit even as that. No memorable scenes to speak ofl
