I WILL say I found this movie surprisingly entertaining. I laughed hard on some of these absurd scenes.
After seeing some interviews with Faulkner post-watching the movie, I think Cage delivered a pretty good representation of Gary - both of his appealing craziness and good american persona.
This movie is a great comedy. I started watching this because it had Nicolas Cage, Wendi McLendon-Covey (from Reno 911) and Russell Brand. I mean those 3 alone would have carried this movie. Having said that, this movie also has a really good supporting cast of unknown names giving life to adorable characters throughout it.
There were some absurd, ridiculous events that made me break out into laughter. Apparently, this movie was inspired by true events. That makes it that more special. :joy:
This is one very stupid movie, but it’s very entertaining and provides a lot of laughs. Definitely worth the watch, be in the mood for a movie that doesn’t take itself seriously.
Academy Award Wining - Nicolas Cage
One of his bravest performance yet. Tour de force of shitty.
Surprisingly warm at times but ultimately a waste of a movie. No focus and typical Nic Cage overacting makes this one skippable.
I never liked Nicolas Cage as an actor but I'm this movie he is more than terrible actor...
Cage has starred in some bad movies over the last few years, but this is his worst. His performance is incredibly irritating, and makes the movie borderline unwatchable at times. The script is witless and insensitive, and any attempt at political satire falls flat. Ultimately, a horrible movie, disappointing considering Larry Charles' work on the wonderful Curb Your Enthusiasm. Heavy sigh!
The voice he uses is annoying and the plot is that of a madman, not a very good film.
This movie has a strong start. Nic Cage's (over) acting is bonkers and, at first, the plot just moves fast, blazing through crazier and crazier scenes. Gary's relationship with Marci and her daughter is kind of endearing even though a little sick, and both have a nice chemistry; God's appearances are also nuts and funny and Gary himself, yes, is portrayed as annoying but also lovable and good natured enough that you can understand why people around him like him.
You are presented with this deluge of stupid and ridiculous scenes that forces you to stay engaged because of how crazy they are. And you are left in a confused daze not knowing what it real and what's complete fantasy.
But by the time Gary actually gets to Pakistan things shriek to a sudden halt. The film -as well as Gary- starts meandering through a boring slog. God's mannerism start getting repetitive and infuriating, Gary turns into an excuse to show the streets Islamabad and his interactions with the locals seems like if Borat suddenly crashed this movie. So basically the last half of the film is just boring with the exception of some marginally funny jokes masterfully delivered by Rainn Wilson and with painfully unfunny confrontation with OBL that looks as if it was lifted right up from one of those epic movie-like parodies.
