Ambitious but messy, though that mess is part of its charm. The meta elements don’t hit for me, and the protagonist though well acted lacks even Caleb’s sympathetic qualities and doesn’t quite connect. All of the major players feel this way, almost hitting something I can feel on an emotional level but the script pulling back. It’s too many ideas with too little time to make the movie, and perhaps too much length to accommodate it. But I admire the attempt, and Joel finds some great, striking shots and some intimate views of his actors.
