The first 30 minutes were actually quite captivating. I can't say the same thing for the rest of the movie though.
That was a weird one... Not sure if I liked it, but I couldn't stop watching.
This is the best performance by both lead actors of their whole careers! This movie is witty but dumb fun. Surprising comedic and action packed all at once! One of my top 5 favorite movies of ALL time!!
"Crazy is as crazy does, and you dragged crazy here. And I don't even know what that does or what that is. You see what I'm saying?"
A film with a premise like this has potential, and I guess I also like this sort of thing quite a bit; this film was underwhelming with such a premise, which makes the underwhelmingness more impactful. Being able to do something like that (the MK-Ultra-esque concept) has a level of fascination: although let's not romanticize it; what happened in real life. But when it comes to being used fictionally, that sort of thing can be so entertaining; I mean, the Bourne films, anyone?
Yet, with this film, the right pieces were there but not used properly. Instead of expanding on that aspect, it was a backdrop for the relationship between the two main characters; the result was somewhat of a boring film: not to mention, having that aspect in the first place seemed useless. If the point is the romance part, you should either: not have a backdrop like this or at least expand more on that backdrop/have it be more prominent to where the romance aspect feels like a cherry on top rather than the entire cake. The irony is that the romance angle didn't pan out to its full extent, either: so it would've been better to have the programmed-sleeper-agent aspect be at the forefront; at least then, the film would've been more enjoyable.
Besides being underwhelming, as far as the execution of the premise is concerned, some choppy editing at times during an action/fight sequence, and besides being somewhat of a boring film overall, there were still some bright spots.
Most of the action sequences had satisfactory utilization all-around.
The cinematography by Michael Bonvillain had some specific good shots that stood out, and generally, it was pretty decent; on second thought, a little better than pretty decent.
Some of the dialogue was funny and delivered in a way that did it justice, improving it. When Victoria said the vocal activation cue to Mike, Jesse's delivery was good. And John Leguizamo's character (while a "little" offensive) provided some comic relief.
The performances by Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart were decent, but his performance was a little off-putting; that sort of awkward, timid character, which seems to be his typecast: and her performance was a little too 'her.' On the plus side, they got better further into the film, especially his performance; I was lowkey impressed: and she delivered some good acting later in, even though it still came across as 'her.'
Topher Grace was an entertaining antagonist with which the 'some of the dialogue was funny' aspect included.
And the animation at the end was creative; you don't see that sort of thing often.
All-in-all, this film wasn't that bad; as I just said/wrote, there were bright spots. But a film can have some redeeming qualities and still be weak; that's what this film was. Taking it a step further, I'd say it was one of the weaker ones I've seen this year: and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but some of the other films were more entertaining.
So, yeah. I wasn't much of a fan, which, surprisingly, seems to go against the majority's opinion: that this film was a trip; a good trip. As I've mentioned a couple of times, this film had some bright spots, but that can only do so much when, generally, the film isn't quite up-to-par.
American Ultra is the stoner-spy-romantic-comedy I never knew I had to see. And keep watching. Until I did! :flushed:
"That was really f#@$ing lame."
Yes. Yes it was.
I don't remember this movie being so bad.
They really botched this one
This is why I should write reviews straight after the film...
Anyway, I liked this movie. It was surprisingly clever, witty and fresh. It was also self-aware but not in a absurd Scary Movie way. It wasn't a parody but at the same time, it took a stoner movie and just, i guess, made it good. Characters had personalities but I guess the focus was more on the plot as opposed to character development. There were nice twists and it didn't go down a cliche route with romance but didn't feel uneventful for that.
I'll write a better review on a second watch. I promise.
actually liked kristen stewart in this film.......overall this film was good, Walton Goggins is amazing psycho, loving him better and better in his films
Something about this movie just doesn't add up. It has so many elements that would make this awesome, but putting them all together makes it feel...off. Maybe it's the goofiness coupled with extreme (and obviously digital) violence that doesn't work? I don't know. It's like this was The Bourne Comedy but with the same level of violence or more. I liked this movie...although I think I like the movie I thought this was going to be better.
Not that bad
I enjoyed it but it could've been better
great acting especially by the two lead actors, couldn't say the same about the storyline. but it's definitely enjoyable
I'm so glad I paid $0 for this movie. Having said that, I still feel like Hulu owes me money for letting me waste my time. I feel that they owe me even though I don't even pay for my membership. This was rubbish of the highest order. Connie Britton, you're my girl but c'mon... weak sauce.
I love this movie so much. I recently purchased the DVD and I'm taking full advantage of it. Kristen and Connie are just goals in this one. Super funny, action packed and everything else that I want in a movie. A+.
ugh, such a disappointment. It had some novel ideas, I loved the stoner Jason Bourne concept, but I didn't love wasting time with giving Jesse Eisenberg the idiot ball to advance the plot, or flat wasting the comedic talents of Tony Hale. Yes, it was fun and entertaining, but it had the potential to be more, and that's why you shouldn't waste your time.
Entertaining movie, it deliver that kind of feeling. i expected a bit more action and super nerdy beating
That was surprisingly good, dont listen other people's crap
I really enjoyed this movie, but noticed that it did seem to change direction in a big way from what was portrayed in the trailers Soundtrack was good! I really enjoy Jesse Eisenberg's style, and this movie again gives K-stew a great in to play something different. I know that this view may not be shared by many, but it's a good mindless film. Might be better to watch if you're stoned? I don't really know.
American Ultra is a fairly stereotypical secret agent film. The story follows a stoner named Mike who discovers that he’s a CIA sleeper agent when he’s accidentally activated, and he soon finds himself on the run with his girlfriend from agents who are trying to kill them. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Topher Grace, and John Leguzamo, the film has a solid cast. And the fight scenes and chases are pretty good; full of lots of exciting and dynamic action. But the plot couldn’t be more generic and cartoonish, and everything is way over-the-top. Some of American Ultra is kind of fun, but overall it’s a poorly written and formulaic action film.
This movie got potential but unfortunately the writing and plot are sloppy, despite good acting from both main characters. Not a bad movie though.
I liked this, although I thought that it would've been better had Jesse Eisenberg's character stayed in that trained killer mode once activated. Although, if that had happened, I suppose that it wouldn't have been the dark comedy that it was.
The end credit sequence was better than the entire film...
I enjoyed it. Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg were great together in this movie and I kinda wish they had made a sequel
Hard to take this movie seriously but it had it's bright spots. Definitely a bit of a silly and cheesy action movie.
If you wanna watch a stoner comedy with action, this is not it, go watch Pineapple Express. American Ultra is something completely different, it's a love story. A love story that revolves around government agents and stoners yes; but still, it's a love story, and it's a damn good one. There was only one scene I didn't like, and that scene can be just cut out of the movie and literally nothing will change.
A military experiment whith a freaky.
Was entertaining for a bit but then I literally got bored during the movie half way thru. High school humor. Couldn't finish it.
Pretty fun for a silly action movie. I'll be really pissed of if there's no second part
Nice movie but was expecting a lot better. The villain character is a bit terrible. And the love melodrama is a bit exagerated. It could have had a lot more action but was very entertaining overall!
Weird, but I like weird, and surprisingly entertaining. Eisenberg & Stewart work well together.
Not good at all. Poor storyline and characters :(
It was ok, but judging from the beatings he ended up on the receiving end of, that gov't doesn't make very good super killers...
It was an entertaining movie.
very good movie loved the action, violence and comedy
Ok, the film is pretty funny, as well as violent and bloody <3
You should watch it if you wanna see something not very serious and you think that curently there's not enough gore in films.
just don't waste your time :)
Wow what a piece of shit. The two of them are nearly impossible to look at separately, and together it's unbearable.

top tier movie because of kristen stewart wearing plaid and having blood on her face
