The director balances the point of view of the musician Jon Batiste at the center of the film, at the best moment of his career, with the coexistence with his partner Suleika Jaouad, once again facing leukemia. It's a look at the other side of success, faced with the vicissitudes of life, and has moving moments, although some scenes feel overly staged. But the personalities of the musician and his partner exude a humanity that overflows the weaknesses of the narrative.

Who would have thought that a very personal documentary about Jon Batiste would be defined by great music? Ok, the answer is probably everyone. In 'American Symphony', you follow Batiste as he prepares for a performance at Carnegie Hall and, at the same time, has to deal with the struggles of his wife, Suleika Jaouad, with leukemia. And because it is so personal, it stands out from many other documentaries about musicians. In cinematic terms, it is perhaps not quite brilliant, and sometimes I found it a little too talky. But the music always ensures a high level of quality in these moments. So, all in all, 'American Symphony' is definitely worth a look.
