There are very few films that have had so much impact on me and that have made me think about the true meaning of our life. American Beauty is one of them. I've seen this movie for some time, but after several months processing what I saw, I'm just writing about it now.
American Beauty, for me, it's about the search for our identity and what really matters in our lives. After all, we only live once. And we should enjoy every minute to the fullest.
We should take advantage of life to focus on the things that really matter, the people around us, not material goods.
The screenplay is very well written, the direction of Sam Mendes is magnificent and the performances are perfect. The characters are very well set up and all of them have a purpose, the soundtrack is beautiful and the cinematography, wonderful.
American Beauty is, without a doubt, in my top 10 favorite movies of all time and it might very well be my number 1.
A complete masterpiece. This is one of the movies that make me think about life. I am surprised how they took subjects like sexuality, success, happiness, paternalism, etc. in the characters and correlated them in a single carefully directed plot. The films that I like the most are those that achieve some impact on me and this definitely made it.

Wow! Can't believe it took me so long to watch this movie. All I can say is that everything about this movie is extremely misleading. I thought I was going to be watching a movie that was about some creepy old man stalking some young girl - and yes, there is a bit of that, but this movie is so much more. This is a deeply complex movie that explores all sorts of questions relating to life, the mundane, and what it means to truly live. Not to mention the many hilarious moments. Fantastic movie.

"American Beauty" is yet another film that is thought-provokingly well done and masterfully crafted, yet too blunt for its own good. This film would be nearly perfect if given a dose of healthy implication. Its best scenes are scenes in which subtly reigns and where things are shown without being shown. The nudity and overly foul and sexual language make it a weaker film in my humble opinion, and had the writer held back a bit, an equally chilling yet not so morally compromising film may have been created. In essence, it's a work of art - unfortunately, it's one that I simply cannot recommend due to the brief yet damningly objectionable moments scattered throughout.
Still a fantastic film from Sam Mendes and a great performance from Spacey.
This was lovely. So disturbing, yet beautiful. I just hate it when dead characters narrate their death—makes no sense!!

Took me a couple tries to get into it. Once I got to the end, I was sobbing without knowing why.
I rewatched the top-rated films of 1999 and of all of them this one has aged worst. The self-serving misogyny has not aged well, and neither have the performances. Disappointing.
A movie that makes you reflect on your own life. The script is really well written. As much of a garbage person Kevin Spacey is, his performance is amazing. Annette Bening and Wes Bentley are both fantastic too. The music and cinematography are great.

The movie about a middle-age guy together with almost perfect wife, a daughter and just ordinary everyday life. The core of this movie is while he met the middle-age crisis and got ignored by everybody around him that bring to tragedy story that effect to all the people around him.
I saw this movie when I was young that seeing this movie like got something hit on my head. I had never have family problem, my father have never be unfaithful to my mom. This is like to explode me to the new world. I would like to say sorry to who miss this movie. This is the most beautiful movie I have ever seen.

A satirical movie made for a different time, so I didn't get everything that was going on. The ending monologue tied everything together pretty well, but I can't say everything in this movie was great.

Featuring Kevin Spacey, Mena Suvari, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley, and Annette Bening, the casting is exceptional; Spacey in particular gives an extraordinary performance. Additionally, the visual style is stunning; making excellent use of cinematography and set design. And, composer Thomas Newman provides an amazing score that’s emotionally powerful. A touching film that looks beneath the superficiality of life, American Beauty is a remarkably compelling drama.

Excellent storytelling. Perfect editing with Kevin Spacey. I watch American Beauty 10 times and you should be done twice to see just how great the Kevin Spacey is and how enormous the actor is.
Sam Mende's debut movie is one of the greatest I've seen. Not only is it entertaining but it is also filled with interesting ideas.
You could think it's another typical American movie, but it makes you think a lot about modern society, and how money, physical appearance, lust, among other things ruin people's lives, and we don't see the true beauty of life. Spacey's performance is one of the best I've seen in my life.
I think I watched it as a child, but then I didn't know of things. So I watched it again and now it's become one of my favorites. I loved everything about it. Also, Kevin Spacey was HOT back then. Well deserved Oscar.
