It's absolutely not a Thriller, rather a psychological drama.
For some this story might be completely beyond comprehension.
But this really exists..controlling narcissism, ranging from mild to completely manipulative forms as portrait here.
Anna Kendrick plays this very convincing.
In the beginning you wonder what exactly is going on..
But soon dots are connected and you see what this can do to a person.
Not a light film, but if you've haven't seen the trailer and watch this with an open mind like I did.. it's intriguing and has a good short run time to tell the story well.
Another case of misleading trailer, this is absolutely not a thriller. The trailer made it look a lot more eventful, it's actually a veeeery slow-paced drama. It's not bad, the message is very important, but it's just very flat.
Anna Kendrick chopping that wood log was the most eventful thing that happened.
"She said no!"
Love the message the film stands for, it has some good performances and it's anxiety inducing in some scenes. It feels meatless for some reason, could of used more work on the script and some spice. Why was this under thriller, i'll never know.
I was expecting a lot more from this. Very slow and boring, it finished and I was left thinking "wtf".
Well made movie, but I kind of fail to see the point of it? When it ended, it just felt a bit pointless to me, from a movie standpoint anyway.
I've suffered exactly this kind of abuse and even I was bored. Tired of seeing AK in dramatic movies, she absolutely does not have the chops to pull off a role like this. This was a whole lot of nothing and criminally underused the beautiful and talented Wunmi Mosaku.
I felt like this film had the potential to be great but despite the film being “slow paced”, the flow of the plot felt rushed
Terrible, the fact that the message in important as everyone is saying, doesn’t mean every movie about it has to be accepted as good, this is a terrible movie, to add more offense, the trailer is misleading, and this is not a thriller AT ALL, why is it categorized as such? You get more out of just the trailer than the whole movie.
A very good film. I almost never watch trailers because I find them misleading or overstuffed 95% of the time, so I went in with little expectation and let the film take me wherever it was going.
I found it a touching and emotional portrayal of the power of social support when you're going through a difficult and disorienting time. There are moments in the film that don't land perfectly, but on the whole I am very glad I watched this film.
Good movie...but the sex scene was an odd choice
For some reason, I thought this film was about something entirely different when I sat down to watch it. Needless to say, I thought it was quite good. The topic material is heavy and the style won’t be for everyone, but Anna Kendrick does a great job here! It will really hit home with people who have dealt with similar issues in their lives.
Rating: 3/5 - 75% - Worth Watching
Alice darling, what is this movie? The story was on life support, and the script needed resuscitation. I genuinely felt like giving my tv mouth to mouth. Even the talent being displayed by these amazing actors and actresses wasn't enough to bring motion into what I would call a stock photo movie.
Abuse comes in verbal form and beats you down. slowly but surely erodes your confidence and undermines your self worth. This movie shows just how it can effect a person and how hard it can be to remove yourself from the influence of the one who proclaims to love you.
A truthful portrayal of a woman suffering inside a toxic relationship. For me, there wasn't enough narrative to make it worth watching again. I'd only recommend to those who don't understand the dynamics at play and need an education.
This felt a lot like one of those TBS (or other random cable channel) "men can't be trusted" films, but done with a decent cast, nuance, and a serious eye. It does get a little frustrating at times to watch our characters' actions (and inactions) play out, but I think it helps the story feel more true and less trite. That being said, some may find this a tad too slow to stay engaged with.
The film has an important message, it seems to me that it was made for a target audience, it won't please everyone, because there's nothing special about it!
No Plot, nothing in more than an hour
My first mistake was getting my hopes up that a movie from my home country would be good.
My next mistake was not reading the synopsis.
My last mistake was watching it.
Anna Kendrick really wasn't bad at all but unfortunately the script and plot was. Where do I start?
We are expected to believe her boyfriend is "abusive" when all the context we are given is him having some paint/photo gala and asking her if she wants a donut saying it's ok to eat sugar once in a while. gasp Oh, and let's not forget he enjoys having sex with his girlfriend... yes, I said it...a man has (whispers) sex with his girlfriend.
It was so bad I had absolutely NO clue that this is where the movie actually wanted to head!!
Instead they take us on a journey where we see Alice pulling and twisting her hair which leads one to believe she has mental health issues.
She talks to her friends about how she feels bad she had a "sex dream" about another man and her friends act as though it's perfectly fine and SHE'S the one that is weird for feeling bad.
It continues on with the abusive "friends" at the cabin where Alice is clearly having issues with Tess and doesn't seem to even want to be there.
We find out that Alice lied to her boyfriend to be there but this is perfectly fine according to her friends, again, we have basically zero context as to WHY this is fine other than her abusive friends sayhing so. (Imagine if the roles were reversed and it had been the boyfriend that went on a vacation without Alice and lied to her about it)
Alice catches a poster for a missing girl (Andrea) and here's where I rreally got confused... not knowing the synopsis for the movie I began thinking THIS is what the movie had to be about!
Alice has mental health issues (pulling/twisting of hair)... her friends are possibly dead and she is struggling dealing with it, their odd behaviour and manipulation (getting her to go to the cabin, taking away her phone/keys and so on) of her would seem to infer this, her boyfriend is genuinely concerned for her and trying to help, the missing girl (Andrea) is either what triggered this episode or was going to turn out to be Alice all along (the lipstick she finds really led me to believe the latter part would be true), her "friends" were always jealous of her boyfriend and the time shespent with him, how much she loved him, and were constantly trying to break them up (even after death) and Alice felt torn between the two, but then....
The boyfriend shows up and all of a sudden he's an asshole, not until after the friends attack him just for shwoing up (with food and cooks for them none-the-less) and treat him like shit without ever really giving us a reason why leading to him asking (perhaps demanding? I don't even recall now, not as though it really mattered at this point) Alice to leave with him. As they are leaving suddenly her "friends" are standing up for her, saying "no" as though this is some triumphant moment for women when all it was was a confusing moment in the movie that hadn't bothered to put any real plot together that made you feel like Alice even needed saving other than from her friends or herself perhaps.
All this and I still have no idea what the Andrea angle was supposed to be about or what happened to her. Were we just supposed to awesome she was abuducted and that it had to be by a man because.... man bad?? and why did it affect Alice but not her friends?!?!
My God! This could have been sooooo much better had it actually been about her struggling with mental health issues and having lost her friends while still dealing with an abusive relationship with a man she loved. The Andrea angle would have made sense, her going to the cabin with her abusive/manipulative friends would have made sense, her lying to get away from her boyfriend while still thinking about him and yearning to be with him would have made sense, heck even her dream about being with another man but feeling bad would have made sense!!... but this drivel!!... left me confused, asking questions, looking up just WTF was the plot supposed to actually be about!!!
Thriller? not a chance. Drama? hardly.
If you could take Anna's performance and apply it to a different movie it would have had a great chance of being an excellent film but this one fell way way short of anything worth while.

A simmering unease that bubbles over, this isn't an easy watch but it does have some very powerful moments. Very good acting by all involved. Kendrick really gave her all to this. I feel that it did have some lengthy drops in quality, but would still recommend a viewing. 6.0.
