A slow and painful movie that starts off impressive, but the novelty soon wears off. The cast is good and the special effects are very immersive, however the whole movie is just a series of random scenes with a very loose connection. With Interstellar we got an epic space adventure, the martian gave us a bit of humour and hope for survival. I honestly don't even know what the subtext for this story is about. What I can tell you is this: Brad Pitt is an astronaut. He goes to space to discover something ridiculously obvious. Some bad things happen for absolutely no reason with no explanation and no follow up. The film ends. Wouldn't recommend even if it lands on a streaming site.
Can’t believe I spent 2hrs watching this. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, I believed it was building up to something.
I lied, I didn’t spend 2hrs watching it, as I kept falling asleep through it, that’s how bad it was. Stayed awake especially for the last hour, forced myself for nothing.
My son went to the cinema to watch this and he did warn me. But, I saw the line up of cast and and thought it couldn’t really be that bad.
I can see the flip side too, well done production wise, a tale of father and son and commitment to his profession. Beautiful views of space, realism of who lonely it would be and many other things. But, unfortunately non of those positives made it enjoyable enough for me. I was simply bored and it had a huge anticlimax.
I was expecting something that may outshine Interstellar, but....no, there was nothing remotely to even put them in a similar category.
Hey, at least I got a little extra sleep, so it wasn’t a total loss lol.
Watch Brad Pitt for two hours while he travels through the solar system to teach us we should not work too much while Liv Tyler is alone at home in your bed.

A very slow and predictable plot. Uninspiring turn from Tommy Lee Jones, who phones in his performance with all the class of a 1980s Motorola cell phone! I couldn't have cared less about whether this father/son relationship had any development. Why? Because Brad Pitt's character is also boring. He's a machine - we get that spelled out to us several times.
Now... Brad Pitt acts well. The visuals are good - but in a world of Interstellar and Gravity, they're underwhelming.
I liked the view of Moon travel. That's the only positive.
For a 2 hour film though, it felt like 3. That's a bad sign for any film. I'll be avoiding this one when I see it advertised on TV.
I'm settling on 5/10 because of Brad Pitt's performance and some of the visuals (particularly the Moon). But I could have gone as low as 3/10 or 4/10 based on my mood leaving the cinema!
I like most space movies and this one is no different. It is shot incredible well with some fantastic shots in space. The score and sound editing were great. Brad Pitt gives a terrific quiet performance. I can see why some would think this would be slow and boring but this held my attention the whole way and I wanted more.
Fantastic movie, in all sense sof the word. A contemplative space drama about a father and son of few words, and the metaphorical and physical distance between them. Great space action and a resonant message. One of the best movies of the year in my opinion.
Criminally underrated.
In the age of Transformers-, Pacific Rim-, Godzilla- and Marvel-movies that is churned out every other month this is a great alternative Sci-Fi film. I loved the pacing and tone, but I understand that a lot of people that are used to the same formula and action every 30 seconds - it could be viewed as boring. It isn't. Brad Pitts performance is perfect and the driving force of this space adventure.
Visually stunning and with beautiful music, this hits almost every note with perfect pitch. A must-see for Sci-Fi fans and a must-buy for me when it's time for a blu-ray release.
The visuals are great but the movie not so much.
At first you have to scratch science out of science-fiction because there is none. This claims to be "in the near future" but the technology is probably centuries away. Well, maybe not the tech but what they achieved at this point would take that long. The movie left many questions unanswered instead it gives us moon-pirates and killer apes for no reason whatsoever but to have an action and a horror sequence for the trailer, I guess.
If the movie would have been even close to that description above it could have been great. Instead we get a story about a son who wants to connect with his father and finds out things about himself along the way. Yah, thanks, but you could have told this on earth as well because none of the scifi elements bear any meaning.
Oh wait - there was a message. There is no intelligent life in the universe so we should love ourselves and the people close. Even without taking position one way or the other one thing does not influence the other. And we shouldn't look in the distance for we might miss what's in front of us. Who payed for this movie ? The Church ?!

Once a year ever since ‘Gravity’ was released, we seem to get new stories about the voyage of space where certain characters “do not go gentle into that good night.”
I wasn’t wowed over the trailers for Ad Astra, because when you work at a cinema and spent most of your day watching trailers, well trust me when I say this didn’t stand out from the rest. I originally thought it was about saving the world or something like that. For what it didn’t advertise was a slow burn sci-fi movie that’s on the same level as ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and the emotional side as ‘First Man’. A personal story told through a first person narrative about unresolved issues from past relationship.
Basically an art house movie with a huge budget.
‘Ad Astra’ was pretty good. After only seeing it once, I feel that this will grow on me overtime and so far it has. A mixture of both ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and Terrence Malick movies. While not as great as those two comparisons, but while watching I couldn’t help to be reminded of those two.
There's some beautiful and impressive shots through out the movie, especially when the movie constantly shows you the entire scale of space and planets through the characters journey. The colors adds to environment that oozes with style and has a tranquil feel to it. I think that’s where the Blade Runner vibes really come in. Brilliant cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema.
Brad Pitt was terrific as the silent astronaut with tangled mood swings. It’s not an explosive performance, just simple enough for it to be effective. Any other actor would’ve gone big for no other reasons than being overly dramatic and it makes sense for his character to be closed off; similar to Ryan Gosling in ‘First Man’, where his emotional health comes last. You learn very little about his character, as most of his backstory is only in the background for you to piece together the puzzle.
The score was mystical and often eerie at times which helped ties in with the unknown aspects of space. The visual effects are excellent and nearly photorealistic at times - something you come to expect by now with space movies.
I wasn’t too sure about the narration at first, because it was very off putting and a cheap way for the character to express himself. However it sorta grew on me after awhile and some of it was almost rambling with Roy questioning every decision he made.
Now for the issues:
I have no idea why Liv Tyler was in this movie, because she literally does nothing and could have easily been cut out. It felt like a reshoot for some reason.
Remember when I said the visual effects are photorealistic ‘at times’, but that isn’t always the case with certain scenes. There’s a deranged chimpanzee that pops up and it looks really phoney. I think that entire scene could been cut out. I’ve brought up twice about cutting scenes, because I believe if this movie went back to the editing room one more time, then my score would be a lot higher.
There’s a ridiculously and almost laughable scene where Roy (Brad Pitt) steaks into a spaceship that he’s not suppose to be on, and all the astronauts onboard go into a frenzy and accidentally start kill themselves while trying to cease Roy. No joke. Roy doesn't even do anything as he never intended to hurt them. It was cheap way of making Roy isolated for the rest of the movie. A few years ago I remember reading a horrifying incident that happened to astronaut Luca Parmitano where he reported water inside of his space suit helmet, and nearly become the first astronaut to drown in space. However, Luca remained calm throughout the whole incident despite the odds of him dying being high, but in the end he survived. So it’s really strange seeing these trained astronauts freaking out because came on board.
Overall rating: Out of the whole spectacle, I find the meaning of the movie the most striking. The themes of family, love and abandonment plays a major role in the story. The whole idea of “working hard and playing later” comes with a cost, which is the less time we spend with our loved ones and abandoning everything to pursuit something better out there when in reality the best things in life are right here. When you discover nothing there’s no turning back and no finding your way back. I’ve been thinking about it for awhile now after seeing the movie.
Never underestimate James Gray as a storyteller.
Some people love it, some people hate it. Honestly, I think the more movies you watch, the more you'll be able to appreciate how this one was made and put-together, because I honestly really enjoyed it and never once thought it boring. It's a slow-building noir odyssey, and it's really important to see the challenges Brad Pitt's character is going through. He can go through something catastrophic and not break a sweat, but thinking about someone in his life that he has a problematic relationship with, his heartrate soars. The visuals are also gorgeous, the acting is some of the best I've ever seen from Pitt. I thought it was brilliant.
The storyline wasn't that good, it was too long. The movie is just a handsome guy with amazing visual effects (CGI). Don't compare it to The Martian and Interstellar.
Two hours of literal boredom. It's too long, there are cliches all around, the plot is poor. Good Inanna, it was the worst space movie I watched.
I think I can say that this is a well made but unremarkable sci-fi movie. I didn't bored watching but it didn't have the emotional or intellectual impact that I hoped it would have.
I don't really know what to say about this movie... the setting was pretty cool and for the first 20-30 minutes I sort of enjoyed the build but after that it started feeling like just a bunch of ever so slightly connected events.
Did anyone else feel weirded out about the religious theme present in a few of the dialogs?
If you are looking for a "rock em', sock em'", action space movie, well, let's just say this isn't the film you're looking for. That having been said, as a more cerebral exploration of the biblical admonition, paraphrased by Pitt's "Roy McBride", that "....the sins of the Father are visited upon the son", then, indeed, you might enjoy this one. I however tend to prefer the advice given by the Judge to Missy Peregrym's "Haley Graham" that, "Just because you have shitty parents, doesn't mean you have to grow up to be an azzhole".
This is the lesson Pitt's "McBride" struggles to learn when he is informed that his "hero" Father, long thought lost on a previous space mission, may indeed not only be alive, but, may have actually sabotaged it, and "something" emanating from his presumed location is causing catastrophic consequences on the earth. Yes, I admit it's a stretch, especially in a movie without light sabers and droids.
The interesting juxtaposition comes as the son, Roy, processes and comes to grip with just how much he has become just like his father, indeed following in his footsteps, but now, must decide if that is who he really want's to be, even though he really DOES love him, or, more accurately IMO, the "legend" of him, and now must potentially destroy that legacy, even if it may actually kill his Dad.
This is the conflict at the heart of the film, as Roy inadvertently ends up committing almost the exact same "sins" as his estranged Father, in the process of completing his own mission, with billions of Earth's inhabitants lives on the line.
A good supporting cast, doing just that, SUPPORTING Mr. Pitt, without a lot of room for any breakout performances, although I did enjoy Ruth Negga's "Helen Lantos" who it turns out, has more in common with the McBride's than Roy realizes. Liv Tyler does her "Liv Tyler" thing, and, an aging Tommy Lee Jones, as noted elsewhere, phones MOST of his scenes in, perhaps, due to needing a quick payday.
I can't wholeheartedly recommend this one, but, I do think it's worth a watch if you like your movies on the contemplative, thoughtful side.
I did not enjoy Ad Astra as much as I thought I would. There were some good things, but overall the movie did not impress me.
Let's start with the visuals, which were by far my favorite part of the whole movie. They looked absolutely stunning all the way through, but I especially liked the scenes on the moon. Very realistic, I wish I had seen them on the big screen of a movie theater instead of my laptop. I think they will hold up well in the coming years.
Same for the musical score and the sound effects. Very well done, they added a lot to the movie's atmosphere.
I also liked the whole "look" of the movie. It's set in the near future and while the tech they use is clearly a long way away from what we have today, it's not absurdly unrealistic to imagine. It's not sparkly starships like in Star Wars or Star Trek. The bases as well; they're cramped and spartan looking, very utilitarian.
They didn't go with realistic physics though, which I think was a mistake. At least, the first half was half believable, but in the ending scenes all realism went out the door.
The plot was okay-ish. I mean, it's not too original and not that surprising. I'd say that for the first half of the movie it manages to somewhat grip to viewer. But after that, it becomes really hard to push through. I wasn't particularly impressed with the ending either, saw it coming a mile away.
I guess I can get the whole message the movie is trying to push, but it sure is a long way to deliver something so simple.
The cast was very good. Of course Pitt is the protagonist and I really enjoyed is performance. He really managed to portray a wound up character in a realistic way.
In the end, there's nothing really bad about this movie, but yet I didn't like it that much. It definitely went for a somewhat artsy route (not that it's a bad thing in and of itself) but I felt like it was too slow and not that compelling. I would only recommend it for the visuals.

Two hours of going nowhere slow. I really don't mind slow, well thought out films but this wasn't it. No thought provoking incidents, no cathartic epiphanies. Nothing. Bored for the full duration.
A welcome change to all the dumb action-focused movies out there. There is no comedy here, there is little action. It's a character study and a very melancholic one at that. For me, an absolute surprise with an incredible space-atmosphere. 9/10
There’s the mystery, the buildup – which, as the movie was going I was thinking was taking too long – then all of the sudden, the credits start rolling. What the… that was it? Brad Pitt was flat (as usual, in my opinion), but looked pretty cool. Was it better than The Martian or Gravity? That’s the debate. But who cares, because they’re both lame. Can’t help but hold recent space movies to the high standard of Interstellar, which is far and away better in just about every aspect that makes up a movie.
The film seem as pointless to me as Brad Pitt’s mission across solar system. Waste of my time and waste of energy in the movie. Better (re)watch Interstellar !
The guy in the top comment has absolutely no taste. The movie has several nail biting scenes. it's a psychological thriller, not a space drama.
It presents, very discreetly, many philosophical dilemmas. Us not knowing exactly what Dr. McBride's goals only inticed my curiosity and anxiety. And the resolution felt very satisfying, as it comes down to something very realistic and that had been hinted along.
I feel like it could've leaned a little bit more into the philosophical questions, the dilemmas humanity may have to face, but my guess is they didn't wanna make too obvious, and let the viewer draw their own questions, which is a good direction.
All in all, great movie. Very realistic in every way, very intriguing, nail biting and beautiful. Unlike the other guy, I didn't find it very slow AT ALL, quite on the contrary, I was often checking the run time and thinking "omfg they're not gonna have enough time to finish everything! are they gonna end the movie without X doing Y? Are we not gonna see what happens?" But that was not the case. Everything was answered, everything had more than enough time to go down without it feelings rushed or anything being left out. I'm glad they tackled everything, unlike other movies where they'll intentionally leave something answered to give way to a sequel. This felt complete, it had closure and it was satisfying. Not the best movie of all time, not a must watch by any means, but a good flick, good nail biter that is never in your face, never TEDtalking you. 8.5/10
I don't know how to feel about this movie... I understand that they want to show that the beauty of our planet is the relationships we form, not the planet itself... that it's just a rock without a soul if we're alone, but I feel that it's confusing since its meaning appeals too much to emotions in a secondary plane.
It was OK, kept me watching because of the story but the end disappointed me.
F-u-c-k me that was so boring.
The best was the Moon-buggy "chase" and that was shown almost in it's entirety in the trailer.
A guaranteed cure for even the most severe insomnia.

Please don't listen to anyone that says this is not a good movie. I'm super critical (granted, in a not-so-popular way), but this movie hit it out of the park. Sure, there were predictable moments, but damn it, we're human. Give us something we can relate to. I was thoroughly engaged and entertained the whole way through. Bravo.

A combination of 2001, Apocalypse Now, Event Horizon, Interstellar & Gravity. But that doesn't necessarily make it great. It's a 7/10.
Beautiful film but unengaging, uncommitted and a movie obviously made to try to nab an Oscar or two. Brad Pitt is coming tot that age where actors feel they have to win an Oscar before it's too late and it's evident that's what he tried here, to no success at all i must say.
I like slow and deliberate films but in this one I felt the actors presences where not there to fill the slowness. Totally the opposite of The Hateful Eight where the actors filled the void in the slowness magnificently.

OK Brad Pitt - you're now on my "Skip List" It's been years since he made a good movie and this one is high on the dung pile list. I watched the trailer and it looked really good - it appears all the action and anything of any relevance is in the 30 seconds of the trailer. The long-drawn-out uninteresting movie with no purpose is mind-numbing time I will never get back!
What the hell is Liv Tyler doing in the movie? They could have saved a fortune and used Marg Simpson - she'd probably have done a better job too! Exactly the same thing happened to me as with Interstellar ... that has left me cold, that is worth it, you can see but in the end it does not say much. Perhaps the problem is identical to the other: too much interest to endure, to resemble or leave the ground left in criticism (not in the public, nor in me), 2001 a Space Odyssey.
So much time and space crossed, for so little reward considering the investment. A dad who ignores your existence, a wife who barely knows who you are anymore - all distances that are crossed over time, and yet, what does he have to show for it? Well that about summarizes the movie too, unfortunately, for the viewer. Pretty to look at, but little reward.
Much like its climatic explanation of far-flung planets, Ad Astra might be beautiful on the surface, but is ultimately void of life when viewers inspect past it's polished outer sheen. A visual spectacle to be sure, but an immensely hollow one at that.
Expectation turned to dust. The movie was not at all what i was anticipating. It's a boring fest. The graphics were good, but that's not the only reason we come to the theatre right!

This was ok and fair. It could have been easily 30 minutes longer. It should have been longer. It's rushed and everything happens so fast that you don't get the necessary time to absorb the environment and the story. I was not transported. The entire time I felt I was on Earth and exactly where I was.
Firstly I absolutely LOVED writing this - only because of the person who came on here to complain these little ditties were too long. I am going to use the word count in full every time from now on. It made me laugh so much. I mean who cares what I write?!
First Man, The First (TV), Interstellar, even Moon and dropping back further Solaris, The Right Stuff these and many more are the extended and distant family of Ad Astra. Unfortunately when your family is as interesting and as compelling as these movies then you are already standing in some particularly big and dark shadows and there needs to be a lot in you to get out into the light.
Ad Astra tries hard, it really tries hard. After all it has Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones, although he now looks craggy enough to be a bonafide cliff face and throws in Donald Sutherland as the world’s oldest security detail plus a fleeting Liv Tyler because, well because it can I think?
With the unlimited potential of near-future space-travel and indeed colonisation at their feet the director/writers came up with a singularly strange and somehow uninvolving tale. Pitt is just a future Neil Armstrong, so dedicated, so single-minded, he bombs his wife out and then has to go on a frankly unlikely and long-winded trip/adventure to see his long-lost and feared dead father.
I’m not a science expert I was more on the art side of the coin at school so I do not profess to know the ins and outs of space travel and the mathematics and the physics involved but saying this even I could see the silliness inherent in the story.
Visuals of the huge antenna on the edge of space over the Earth was great, the terrible power surge and the ultimate investigation into it was the high point. From then on the trip was downhill. Much like Harrison Ford in the first cinematic outing of Blade Runner I was not a fan of the voiceover and to be honest, either make an audiobook or make a film. For a serious, adult, science-future film the logic-busting moments far outweighed any acting or visual thrills.
Without listing them there are some very silly moments. Do you know what the makers annoyed me with them, so here are a few.
The moment you have to travel to Mars to send a message to Neptune means that technology has gone backward in the future. The sneaking aboard the ship to Neptune in particular seemed to have been written and plotted by an over-excitable twelve-year-old that had a lot of sugary snacks. The hugely implausible incident that was there purely to give Brad Pitt an action hero moment later was frankly pathetic and insulting. The mystery of the power-surge was not explained and Tommy Lee Jones’ motivations seemed extreme to say the least. Without trying to sound superior or clever there was much on the screen that was somewhat childish.
The casting of the movie was strange, honestly tell me why Liv Tyler and Donald Sutherland were in the film and it was criminal to use Ruth Negga so briefly and then somehow make her look as if she had wandered in from another film set, she looked pissed-off through most of her scenes, hopefully it was acting but I would not be surprised if it is how she actually felt. There were some very poor supporting actors during the run time and if anyone can’t spot the worst one let’s just say computers should have replaced receptionists on the moon.
Now some very clever types will tell you this is not actually a science-fiction tale but a story of loss, redemption, regret and complicated dynamic behind driven people, well macho-men actually, and the never-ending conflict and confusion between fathers and their sons. All very good and actually not the first time and filmmaker has used a specific genre as a suit of clothes for the real story they want to take. Sorry but that is no excuse to ignore widely known science and facts and more or less abandon logic to drive home your story. In my view that is very lazy indeed.
All in all Ad Astra was a mess with just a few good moments. Science-fiction may seem to many to not be a serious topic and for nerds and kids but Ad Astra just shows how difficult it is. There was not even any monsters or aliens in this.
Watch the TV show The First at least the music is more atmospheric and exciting than this film.
I was actually looking forward to this film and felt let down by this poor lazy effort.
This film could have been great, but it was let down. The acting in this film was a bit of a letdown. Some of the scenes were particularly lacking in the acting skills front, which I found to be disappointing. There was one scene that you'll notice straight away when you see it that was poor. I got rather annoyed by some of the product placements at the beginning. Sure Virgin Atlantic wants to make space flight a thing, but seriously? And DHL on the moon? Where are they supposed to be delivering to... The spaceship-port (airport) terminal was abysmal in my opinion when compared to any of the airports we have on Earth. Some of the action scenes as well just didn't do it for me, there wasn't the feeling of immersiveness that I would have expected, and some of the sense of thrill in a few of the intense scenes was missing. There was this one scene that I found absolutely hilarious even though I probably shouldn't have. You'll know which one I'm talking about if you've seen it. The story was weak and didn't really flow well either.
I absolutely love space and the idea of going into space. Space movies and shows are some of my favourites, and I absolutely loved the CGI and visualisation of the world beyond Earth in this film. It was great. The CGI and visualisation of space is the reason I'm going to rate it a 7/10 and not a 6/10.
'Ad Astra' must be Latin for 'Apocalypse Now in Space'.
The only reason to see Ad Astra is to enjoy the magnificence of the images on the best and biggest screen you can find. If you think you're going to wait until it shows up on a file sharing site, then 20th Century Fox won't be the only ones getting robbed.
The story is derivative and the excessive narration is distracting, though it is Brad Pitt at the top of his game so that'd be forgivable if there wasn't far too much space in between the plot points.
Yes, there are some scenes that would be right at home in 2001, Interstellar, or Gravity, but this film would be so much better if it weren't reminiscent of anything else.

An interesting documentary style drama of space travel and family ties. Apart from the (currently) impossible distances involved in this journey the science was interesting and not overly forced. Take the time to enjoy the journey and commentary.
I was gonna rate it a 7 until I found out they used edited clips of Tommy and Brad's dialogue to make some space sound effects...After reading that, I of course pictured Tommy and Brad in a sound room going pew pew pew... kappowww...woooooooshhh!!! ..Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhh
An average space movie. Sure the visuals are great and I heard they were highly realistic, but the writing was terrible. Constant voice overs to the point where you assume it got butchered in editing like Blade Runner was. Everyone seems to make the worst possible decision in every situation. there's a monkey attack for absolutely no reason. The black characters die first in every deadly encounter they're in like this is an 80s movie. This setting deserves a better script and I feel kind of sorry for everyone involved.
I'm really in between with this one. I wasn't really connected to the emotional side of this, coming from an emotional person. What I was connected to was the baffling sequences. Mission Impossible but Brad Pitt and space. There was barely any sense, but I was buckled in for an astronomical space buggy ride. I honestly got thrown out into zero gravity so many times. The casting could have been better, although the acting was fine. If it had strong emotions like Interstellar, I would have loved this, without a doubt. I can't wait to forget this so I can rewatch it.

A pretty interesting movie about someone trying to find something they lost, with the addition of space as a plot point. This movie does drag a little though with some parts being quite boring and other parts being a little too convenient in how they turn out.
Ad Astra showed potential early but never really took off. It does offer some great imagery and individual scenes are interesting, but it ultimately falls to the bottom of the space movie pile.
I found this satisfying the first time through. On my second I found it quite sad, but I knew it was my sadness...I knew what he had faced and what he would find.
Oddly, I believe they've changed things since it's release...however, the important parts remain: Roy's catharsis in the face of, "The Quiet Forest," and his core relationship with Eve being reinvigorated as a result. And, it's perhaps made more clear that McBride Senior is less combative with his son -- that Roy was needed on this mission. Oh, and the music - really worth listening to the very end!
Another Netflix SF movie with beautiful image but a plot that can fit on a post-it. I want movies that I feel would have been worth seeing at the theater, not just movie to pass time.

Irrespective of its themes and tropes, Ad Astra remains fundamentally a mainstream Hollywood movie. And whilst such a status can certainly hold advantages for a filmmaker (primarily in terms of budget and casting), so too are there major pitfalls in having to toe the line of commerciality and cater to demands for crowd-pleasing material, demands which often don't jibe with esoteric content. This manifests in the form of an overly convenient resolution and some of the most ludicrous narrative diversions I've seen since the sojourn to Canto Bight in the Rian Johnson abomination that was Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), diversions which seem to belong in a different film entirely, so tonally unrelated are they to the more existential material surrounding them (space pirates! enraged simians! knife-fight/shoot-out!). Which is not to say, for one second, that I disliked the film – I didn't; even if the narrative never manages to get beyond the "Heart of Darkness in space" template and the script relies far, far too heavily on a sub-Terrence Malick voiceover. The craft on display is exceptional and the story is thought-provoking and generally entertaining, with a terrific central performance, and some spectacular visuals (especially in the IMAX format). But it all could have been so much better.

This movie is beautiful. Its epic scope held a lot of potential. Plus, I can't remember ever seeing Neptune in a movie before. . Unfortunately that potential was not realized. The story is disjointed, and Tommy Lee Jones' performance is pretty meh. A little more connective tissue and heart would have gone a long way, though I realize it may have been intended to lack heart (given the nature of the protagonist's mental/emotional state).
Biggest positive for me: The entire sequence on the moon, including the car chase, was a pleasant and unexpected surprise.
Overall, I'm glad I saw it, but I probably won't watch it again.

I kept waiting for the plot or a twist, or something, and then it was the end of the movie. Trailer looked good but it was deceiving.
Jeezzz..what a waisted potential…great shots and cinematography..and that’s all. In addition to boring, unexplainable story I didn’t like Brad Pitt being narrator. It was so not convinced. Also music - by itself was great but completely doesn’t fit to movie. 5/10 only because of cinematography

It’s a very slow and steadily paced movie that I feel is perfect to be watched at night, preferably with headphones. 8/10
There are two things impossible in this sci-fi space travel movie where Brad Pitt saves the world. The first is how he is able to travel quietly through space only with his spacesuit and without a ship. The second is how after traveling to and even Neptune he keeps his hair totally clean.

Good slow movie, but If you want some action... don't see this slow movie... it felt as 2001: A Space Odyssey... CGI was very good, buuuuuut rooms they used in the movie on moon or mars are worthless! I give you an example rest place room with earth life video... why so cheap??? I thought that nobody would have a harder time in the space than Sandra Bullock in Gravity, but I was wrong.
Brad Pitt had to deal with 1. Huge working accident; 2. Pirates of Moon; 3. Space Monkeys; 4. Emergercy landing on Mars; 5. Betrayal by the space army; 6. Go to the spaceship before the ignition; 7. Astronaut Battle Royale; 8. Mental health problems with being alone in the space; 9. and last, but not least. A absentee father who said that never care about his son after 30y of these two don't seeing each other and tries to fuck up the mission. Dude, Brad Pitt TRAVELS ALMOST THE WHOLE SOLAR SYSTEM TO SEE HIS FATHER and Tommy Lee Jones acts like that, this motherf*cker deserved it to die.

If it wasn't for a top billed cast such as "Brad Pitt" et. al. It would be considered a C level film. The kind you give away with a box of cereal. I was not impressed. If it wasn't for him being in this film, it wouldn't even be worth watching.
There was some amazing shots of space ships, and a couple cool stunts - But that's about all that's even remotely notable in this film.
This movie is actually so good, it's a philosophy movie, in the cover of sci-fi, the beginning and the end looks boring but it hits me right in the heart.

A stylish and reasonably solid 90-minute sci-fi film. Sadly, it's actually over two hours long, and most of that extra time is spent taking itself Way Too Seriously. You know that it's Very Serious because we get a closeup shot of Pitt looking his age. And then another. And then 1,482 others, all accompanied by Very Serious Monologues given in a Very Serious tone of voice by a Very Serious Pitt while the camera pans across his Very Serious face.
In the end, it's almost easy to forget that the whole thing is about a remote and stoic guy who breaks all kinds of rules and laws and gets people killed so that he can ditch his estranged wife and track down his crazy father, who has had way too much solo time to contemplate his utter failure to find signs of intelligent alien life, and who would rather die alone in the dark and cold emptiness of space rather than return to Earth with his Very Serious son. On the bright side, the Very Serious Son seems to finally see the error of his ways and the film ends with him meeting up with his wife back on Earth where, oddly enough, it would seem that he'll be suffering no consequences for his actions. So there's hope for him, perhaps, but c'mon. The guy just a ticking time bomb at this point. Seriously.

I thought the monkey would be an interesting plot to follow... it didn't happen. The moon race was nice too.

The trailers make this seem like a much different film than what it actually is. This falls very squarely into the "contemplative" sci-fi bucket. For the first half or 2/3 of the film, there's a ton of world-building, a lot of focus on atmosphere, and plenty of philosophical/character stage setting for the climax, which is where everything came together for me. At the end of it all, this movie is so much less about space and more about relationships, priorities, existence and (to the extent you want to make it) religion's role in our lives. Brad Pitt was undeniably fantastic. The visuals were top notch. And it all just clicked for me once the final credits rolled. This is a must watch for all fans of "thinking" sci-fi.
A visionary masterpiece! The movie is just so beautiful and the story is quite deep and thought-provoking. The moon rover chase is one of the best scenes I've ever seen in a sci-fi film.
Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones star in the compelling science fiction drama Ad Astra. After a space installation above Earth is destroyed by an energy surge it’s traced back to a ship orbiting Neptune believed to have been lost, leading Space Command to recruit the ship commander’s son, Major Roy McBride, to undertake a mission to contact him and find out what has happened. Pitt gives an especially strong performance and director James Gray does an impressive job at keeping the film grounded (as does the script). Also, the sets and special effects are remarkably well-done; adding a sense of realism of interstellar space travel. Yet the pacing can be rather slow at times and the main character is often emotionless and distant (by design, which both works and doesn’t). Ad Astra has a few problems, but it’s still a captivating space odyssey.
Basically it is Apocalypse Now in space. I liked it except for his father’s death, which was too contrived to take seriously. I think they should have committed and had Pitt be the assassin that Jones (Kurtz) has been waiting for and had him murder him like the slaughtered cow. The suicidal was a shitty way to ensure the people he murdered cannot have justice.

A long, slow, smooth journey to a simple truth. Let's admit it, the draw was Brad Pitt and the tease of a talented cast (we only saw for seconds). The first three minutes lull you into a dreamy state, bewitched by blue eyes and a calm voice, but don't rouse yourself, that will be the pace of the whole movie. Beautiful, other worldly special effects... beautiful man... hypnotic vocal tones... OK, wake up, the film is over. I give this film a 6 (quieting) out of 10. [Space Relaxation Exercise]

Holy crap that was BORING as well as predictable.
Boring and predictable, I mean, literally nothing happens. For a moment I thought - maybe inspired by interstellar fantasy - that somehow he was his own father: they both killed the entire crew and went to Neptune alone, and also the black woman on Mars said her parents were killed during the trip, and one of the women on board is a black woman, presumably her mother. That would have been a great plot twist with some kind of time warp paradox, but nope, nothing happens, at all. 6 for the visuals.
Normally in sci-fi, bad science is used for the furtherance of the story -bad enough- but when you have bad science AND bad story, I have NO time for it. The science was ridiculous, the plot was nonsensical, the pacing was excruciating... This movie was hot garbage and I'm just glad I didn't pay for the burden of enduring it.
A beautifully tense and somber sci-fi classic. Not one for the Marvel and Star-Wars redux generation.
Nothing in this movie is bad. It's fine. And i am fine with that. So i say i give it a fine rating. Nothing fancy, nothing that really hurts, because it does not deserve that. Just fine.
EXCEPT the effects. They are really good. I liked Gravity and Interstellar, even if both had a totally different approach by showing Action in Space.
Gravity - Everything that could go wrong, goes wrong and absolutly everything explodes, often in a POV-Camera-esque Position) Instellar - a lot of the shots are taken by a far distance. Some scenes are like a dance, rhythmic but tense.
But Ad Astra adds a '2001'-Touch, but does not exaggerate as 2001 often did.
In the end: Entertaining movie with minor flaws and an overall fine-ness

Amazing visuals. Unfortunately that's the only good thing about this movie. Yea good acting by Brad Pitt but damn it's so slow & didn't really get the point of the movie. Felt like wasted 2 hours of my life. If you're going to watch this movie, watch it on a 4K TV with HDR version of the movie, it will at least make you feel like you didn't waste 2 hours staring at the movie.
