A complex ball of emotion that fits snugly into the confused mental state of a fresh cancer diagnosee and his confidants. It's an unusual setting for a comedy, which leads to a few situations where it feels like we should ask permission to laugh, but that plays into the central theme that there's no right or wrong way to deal with something so complicated. It's not wall-to-wall laughs, either, which would give the impression that it's taking the subject too lightly.
Seth Rogan plays his typical role excellently, the wise-cracking frat boy facsimile everybody seems to know, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt balances him out with a harsh dose of sarcasm cut with grim reality. It's sneakily effective about investing us in the cast, and by the time the end rolls around they're almost family. A bit formulaic and weepy at times, neither are quite excessive enough to incite accusations of being a closet chick flick, and it's often ready with a firm punchline just when it's needed.
A solid and very underrated film. I was very surprised that I liked this as I am generally not a fan of Rogen's work.

I don't usually like Seth Rogen, but he did really good in this.
It was just nice to see a movie where the sick guy does not die at the end. I was hating that trend.
Very good movie, even if Seth Rogan was in in :P
That 50/50 doesn't feel like a gut-punching film is perhaps the greatest achievement that director Jonathan Levine pulled off with this movie. A comedy about cancer; the combination is refreshing. Despite the large taboo that still rests on this subject, Levine and his group of actors dare to approach this drama with humor, having made a film that contains many comical elements, but does not hesitate to also distrubute emotional punches.
50/50 is in fact the life story of screenwriter Will Reiser, who was confronted with a rare form of cancer at a young age. In the film he is called Adam Lerner and he has a relationship with a beautiful woman, portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard, a nice job where he gets satisfaction from and a best friend anyone would wish for. The shock is therefore great when suddenly cancer is found in him. The film then records how Adam tries to deal with this and is helped by his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) and his very young therapist, Katherine (Anna Kendrick).
Before this director Jonathan Levine made smaller films like the horror All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and dramedy The Wackness, but with 50/50 he makes the first big step to the general public. A step that goes very well for him. Thanks in part to producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (the team behind hits like Superbad and Pineapple Express). The shameful humor of the two adult teenagers also works in surprisingly well in a film with such a heavy subject.
However, the emotional heart of the film lies in Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who might've delivered the best performance in his career so far (dated 2011). In a difficult role, which can easily fly of the handles, he puts his character down nicely first. Who would expect that a young man gets cancer in the power of his life? But that initial astonishment slowly but surely fades away to fear about his future, especially or if he has one. Especially in the scenes with his therapist, even though fantastically played by the lovely Anna Kendrick, that becomes very clear.
There is enough to label 50/50 as extremely succesfull. For a film that makes such a difficult topic open to the general public and succeeds with laughter and flying colors, the bar has to be very high.
"The more syllables, the worse it is"
7,7/10
Such a great movie, and i have no idea
Why everyone is complaining about Seth rogen.. Hes great
Great, emotional story of human struggle, intermingled with lighter moments of happiness and humour.
Great. I got really sad watching this movie.
its really a good movie!
very almost nearly cried like a bitch. i rarely care all that much about these sort of movies. really enjoyed this. also like everyone else is saying, anna kendrick was impressive.
Great movie.
Excellent casting, especially impressed with Anna Kendrick, who I haven't seen much before.
This was a very good movie. It touched a somewhat controversial subject, cancer. And it did it in a very good way.
I had my reservations before hand about the fact that this besides a drama also a comedy, but they managed to keep the jokes very tasteful and funny.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anna Kendrick all did a very job. This movie really shows that they all have the potential to become big superstars, the new generation!
Overall i would say go see this movie. Its one of the best of 2011.
I don’t know if it was about the friendship which I currently don’t have, wether it was about death or diseases, but I could stop crying. Great movie. Very good acting of all the actors.
Watched it on the new year , it's like getting a new life line
Great movie. Was expecting some real shit of an ending to make me feel even worse, but not the case. Yes, even Seth Rogan did well.
Quite good and rewatchable for a comedy with heart.
The movie strikes a delicate balance between humor and heartbreak, and features outstanding performances from the entire cast, particularly Gordon-Levitt, who delivers a nuanced and touching portrayal of a young man struggling to come to terms with his mortality. The film also addresses important issues related to cancer, including the fear and uncertainty that come with a diagnosis, the challenges of treatment, and the impact on loved ones. Overall, "50/50" is a moving and insightful film that handles its heavy subject matter with honesty and sensitivity, while also delivering moments of laughter and joy. It's a must-watch for fans of character-driven dramedies.
A Seth Rogen movie that I actually liked
Truly appreciate the story that have been told.
Can't even imagine what Adam going through.
Describing what Adam felt is hard.
This may be weird to say but it felt like it was trying too hard to make us feel sad for someone who clearly was going to be okay in the end. I mean it had its moments, but it could've been so much better. Only couple of scenes that stirred any emotion. The rest of it was almost like going through a checklist of things that's supposed to happen in movies about cancer.
Not great, but not terrible either.
This movie made me feel too many things all at once. At one point you love seeing JGL's character living the shit out of his remaining life and on the other the real struggle— for him, coping with the cancer itself and for the people around him, worrying how they would act or even treat him.
This movie reminded me of The Bucket List. Damn sad stuff.
Reminded me of 500 Days of Summer.
I was really enjoying this movie up until the end. Yes, it's been done before, the characters are a bit cliché but I was really into the story of those people, learning that a loved one has cancer and how said person coped with it. And then the end was... happy. Maybe it's me, who would want someone to die of such disease when it's way better to beat the odds. But I know the odds suck and I'm happy for those who beat them, but I just wanted to see something more in this movie.
One of my favorite movies!
damm u nyte, u ruined it 4 me lol
If you like Anna Kendrick you should go see "Up in the Air" (2009). You could consider that her great break-through (if you don't consider the human pile of garbage that is called the Twilight trilogy that somehow seemed popular to teenage girls and their moms and makes them hysterical).
I really enjoyed this one, it's funny but also pondering.
If you like it - try "The Bucket List"

(it's more inspiring/moving in my opinion)
definitely recommended. one of the best movies of 2011 imo.
powerful movie, funny and yet inspirational, even Rogan was back to being funny again! Must see.
