4.1 Miles 2017

A harrowing, heartbreaking, disturbing 22 minute short focusing on the captain of the coastguard ship on a Greek Island who gets continually called out to save the lives of thousands of Syrian and Afghan Migrants coming across from Turkey on poorly constructed vessels. There is little closure here. It's just a slice of life type short on the continuing humanitarian scandal we occasionally get to hear about.

Nominated for Oscars's Best Documentary Short. I've had to stop and reconsider the criteria for what makes a good documentary: choice of topic, clarity of storytelling, filming excellence, audience response? These are all factors, but should not be evenly weighted. I was moved by this Short, as were the rescuers who found themselves in this crisis, This film shows that the horrors of war are not limited to the theatre of the war, itself, but spreads out in concentric circles as from a disturbance in water. The storytelling is emotive rather than scripted, the images clear and unforgettable. It is a story worth telling and worth seeing. I give it a 10 out of 10. This film can be seen on YouTube.
