Now I will call them creepy paper too.
[7.1/10] A bit scattershot as pilot episodes go, but I like the setup and the mood. As a fan of the original film, I appreciate how the T.V. show is taking a similar concept, but mixing it up a little bit by changing the characters and shifting things to America. It’s a different group dynamic, but the same general vibe, which I appreciate.
I think my favorite part was Colin the “energy vampire.” Maybe it’s a little too 1990s observational comic, but I like the idea that his special power is just being boring, and it’s a fun running gag. I also like Guillermo a lot, as the put-upon familiar who works hard but feels disrespected by his boss, and gets frustrated when his dream to become a vampire himself is thwarted. It’s a good dynamic that can power the show, or at least that relationship, for a while.
And the other vampires aren’t bad either. Nandor doesn't do much for me beyond being a foil to Guillermo, but there’s room for him to grow as the vampire who’s not respected by his pals. Nadja and Lazlo make for a fairly amusing pair, especially when they’re both lusting after “The Baron” at the same time. And Nadja pursuing a local night watchman who she thinks is the reincarnation of her lost love is a funny setup.
The whole “arrival of The Baron” premise is a nice way to translate a pretty standard “the boss is coming for dinner” sitcom trope into a comic-horror guise, and it’s always nice to see Doug Jones pop-up in full prosthesis.
Overall, this one didn’t blow me away out of the gate, but it has potential, and it’s nice to see the show replicating the genre-bending “horror mockumentary” rhythms of the film that sired it.
so so funny and Matt Berry is ace.
Not quite as hilarious as the film, but similar in humour and execution.
Silly little vampires.
Even more enjoyable second time round - Matt Berry goes from strength to strength (check out Toast of London to see him in all his glory) and Kayvan does a tremendous job with the hilariously timid yet pompous Nandor.
Natasha Demetriou will no doubt go on from this to be in huge demand. Sexy, funny and bounces off the rest brilliantly.
Although my favourite at present has to be Colin Robinson - the Energy Vampire. Absolutely inspired character !
The escensce of the original movie is still there in this show, I need more, and now
I'm sure there was a lot of jokes in this episode that flew by me. But despite that, I enjoyed it. It was a very decent series premiere. I'm going to have to watch the movie in order to gain some insight into what this show will be about.
You need to get used to it but worth to watch it.
The only reason I started watching this show is that I watched the movie, and I absolutely loved it and wanted to give this show a fair chance. I thought it would be alright and not as good as the movie itself, but boy did I enjoy this episode. I loved some of the pop references, and I was totally hooked on the idea of an energy vampire.
For a show that's only thirty minutes long, it is pretty solid, and the run time is good since I think if it were an hour-long, it would have been a drag.
Doug Jones was absolutely amazing as always, with beautiful prosthetics, and the acting was spot on.
Definitely give the pilot a go! you will not regret it, especially if you loved the movie.
LOL I already love the new characters in this. I take it that Guillermo was created and named after the del Toro the director. The "Energy vampire" is an amusing concept. I recognize one of the LARPing college kids who previously starred in Edge of Seventeen (2016).
The glitter scene(s) were the best! I hope that later we'll get to see cameos of the characters from the movie.
I'm glad this show seems to be in tune with the movie it's based on, overall. Unfortunately, most of the jokes didn't land as well as they did in the movie (though I loved the glitter and the LARP thing).
Nandor's character seems to be the most interesting one and, as such, most of the humour of this show will inevitably stem from his personality. But his Indian accent is very annoying, because I assume that's not the kind of accent he was going for.
The addition of Colin was unfortunate and terribly unnecessary, as his character isn't even remotely funny. It's like they picked the most annoying character from The Office and put him here. It wasn't funny then, it's definitely not funny now. Colin's character has become an overused cliché. At least he got very little screen time in this pilot episode.
But I see potential to grow, and this show's similarities with its hilarious bigger screen counterpart are good enough to keep me around for more. At least for now.
Another gem of a warped comedy featuring Matt Berry - I only just heard about this and am hooked.
The difficulties those poor 21st century vampires face... like signing for delivery on a tablet - :metal_tone1:
The fact that Nandor bought glitter to look like a vampire from TWILIGHT and the Baron had an extremely wild sexual affair with both Nadja and Laszlo made this pilot episode a real comedy triumph.
New favorite! I love Nandor.

I lost it when Nandor wanted to buy glitter so he would look like Vampires do in Twilight.
