On episode 3 of this season and by now I realized that this unfortunately isn't up to par with the first season. The first season had a ok script, but the characters personality were well built and for the most part credible.
Now the second.. I couldn't stand to watch it till the end passing over to 3rd. 3rd was better but lacked a lot to be as good.
Now this one. It's ok but not up to the first.
This season could have been an email, which should have gone straight to the spam box. What a disappointment!
This season has absolutely nothing to do with “True Detective.” It's more like a bad take on X-Files or Fargo with some wannabe horror interludes. The season is not recommended and very disappointing. It's a shame, I was really looking forward to it.
I’m already losing interest in this season. Seems like they knocked it out of the park with the first season and it’s just been downhill after that. What a shame and disappointment.
This season is excruciatingly painful to watch. I just want to kill myself by the end of each episode. Three episodes and I'm done.
The first episode was very good.
And it went downhill after that.
You'd think , for a short 6 episode series , the episodes would be packed. But you're wrong.
It's a total snooze fest. Like someone here mentioned , if you wanna know the main plot of the show, just watch the last 10mins of every 1 hour episode. Everything else is a filler , filled with miserable characters , annoying kids , side storylines that go nowhere.
If you watch all the 6 episodes in a go , you might not realise this. But you would if you waited a week to see this mediocrity.
Mythical and Slow. Honestly, it was painful to watch. Episode feels like day long not an hour, with nothing outcomes of it. Focuses on emotional and expressions and that is not made very well. Three episodes, I'm out!!
Also, they could remove porn scenes, not all people accept this or take it very easy. I'm watching because it is about investigation and detectives, but directors keep displaying life related stories with disgusting porn scenes included. This is cheap
Night country was bad. The story made little sense and the semi horror aspects didn't work within the story all that well. Had high hopes with Jodi Foster being in it and she was great but the lady that played Navarro was horrible most of the time. This was the worst season and no not because of the female leads but the story and how bad it was at times. They should kill the series after this as everything has gone downhill with this season. Just bad.
I wonder what's happened to this show i mean this isn't True Detective. I'm forcing myself to watch each and every episode and i'm glad it's only 6 episodes in total, so painful it deserves 4 stars at max. I hope True Detective will come back one day but definitely it's not here in season 4.
I am really glad they went back to the paranormal theme.
MODERATION EDIT: Be respectful.
USER EDIT: Sure, sorry.
I ejected halfway through this season. The problem with this show (and others like it) is that they throw out a quirky, dark and dramatic event at the beginning of the season, and then they live off of that for the rest of the season (Sharp Objects is another recent example). I have seen some people say that they are here for the mystery, which is odd. As with season 1, the "mystery" is an afterthought. Instead, we are subjected to watch broken people have bad dialog in a miserable location. Worse, are frequently subjected to cheap tricks such as jump scares and visual anomalies. Foster and Hawkes deserved better than this. Watch Fargo if you want to see how drama and mystery are supposed to be done. This show is nothing more than cheap horror.
So far the worst season of the series by far, I don't believe it can come back. Apart from the scenery, utter garbage. I'll just keep on watching to hammer the final nails on this atrocious season, and I hope they stop here because this skid mark of a season is bad enough that fathoming to do a 5th season would be deranged.
This is not real True Detective.
An intriguing premise quickly turned to a boring soap opera.
The entire season should take only 3 episodes if they skipped the unnecessary scenes and fillers,
or it should take only 2 episodes if they stuck to the content that actually mattered, then it would likely be a good show.
I did not observe many emotions on the most of the actors' faces either.
A very forgettable season.
Seen the entire thing unlike some of the comments here and beliebe this to be a good season overall, nothing exceptional but Danvers / Navaro are pretty great characters, a pretty interesting mystery. However the side characters / side plots do lack and felt by the end they didn't really serve much purpose. Nowhere near as good as season 1 but it was never going to be, for it's own thing, a worthwhile watch.
Off to a good start. Stellar cast (True Detective signature move). A wide-open mystery, with plenty of avenues to investigate. I’m excited!
The worst season of this show, a complete failure, I hope either it doesn't have a new season or they don't destroy the credibility of the first season.
This is not a True Detective season 4 this is The Terror season 3, This season is literally bait for people watched True Detective.
Anyways I think show wasn't that bad but it had more potential of course. First episode and end of the some episodes were good but with unnecessary drama, non satisfying end and bad written dialogs only thing I can call this show is 'mid'
Specially Navarro's sister, Liz's Daughter and Prior's wife were annoying characters. If I didn't know its HBO show I would %100 say that this is a Netflix show.
This is so bad. The script was not at all "true crime", it was some awful mystic nonsense. This was the same with season 2. RIP HBO, who once made TV series that felt like epic cinematic masterpieces. Now, they are on the same level as Netflix/Amazon now.
Well that was definitely a waste of time.
This season was... Not good. A mess. Just a mishmash of red herrings and misdirections that mostly didn't pay off in the end. If you're on the fence about watching this season, save yourself some time and annoyance, and DON'T.
Look, there's nothing wrong with this season. It's produced well (minus the ubiquitous blue/orange color pallete), actors are good, location is intriguing. I don't mind that most people are not likable. I don't mind that much time is spent on non-detective work. In particular, I liked the tribal stuff (whether that's authentic or not). I don't mind that there's some crazy stuff going on. I don't mind that sometimes nothing happens for minutes. I don't agree with critics that the show became unbearable because it's woke, anti-capitalist or feminist for no reason (I even don't understand these complaints). My biggest complaint isn't even that there's a lot of plot holes, illogical scenes nor the fact that the conclusion is rather disappointingly ordinary - it's note even a proper murder in a legal sense, let alone a multi-complex, planned, prepared, mysterious crime justified by a higher motivation and committed by a criminal mastermind or sick weirdo. Quiet the contrary: ultimate reason for death was an accidental avalanche (on plain ground?).
But - here comes the but - this season isn't what I expected after watching the previous seasons. I hate scary movies and this season is way to scary. Yes, I know, guilty as charged, I'm a p***. But I just can't stand it. I simply can't enjoy this season. I was prepared for some sketchy scenes since the crimes in this show are are abominable and usually committed by sick minds, but this paranormal stuff in this season just isn't what I was prepared for. I was prepared for some miserable characters doing depressing but real detective work. I mean, the hint is in the name right? TRUE detective. At least the case - in its core - is just a regular and, frankly, quiet ordinary crime/accident. Plus, I get the feeling that most of the paranormal stuff isn't connected to the main story in any shape or form.
Bad, and a new demonstration that the first season was a 'one hit wonder'. A similar case to Westworld.
Slow, with personal plots that are not interesting, with gratuitous gore that goes nowhere. It's really a shame because I want to like it but no, it's a terrible season.
I got to the final episode. Half way through that I actually stopped caring about what was happening. I just totally lost interest.....
I read articles about Inuit religion (mainly Sedna and related stories; seems the Baffin Island beliefs are the most prominent here) while watching this and it made it SO good. I like that she is acting throughout the series along with various other spirits, but they're never named. It goes perfectly with the themes of loss of identity and culture of native people from colonization. Some of the people have no idea what's happening, but the gods are gonna be gods whether you know they exist or not. So much religious imagery and symbolism in every single episode that tells another story hiding beneath the main plot.
Also reviews all over the internet saying that a bunch of pointless stuff keeps happening and it's boring are really showing me how poorly the general audience for this show analyzes media. Just because something happens you don't immediately understand it, that doesn't mean it isn't important like. Have you never watched media that requires critical thinking and analytical skills? I hate having everything spoon fed to me like a child
after painfully watching the mess of what is supposed to be a crime show and have the heavy title of "True Detective", people, actors, (horrible Foster in acting) writers, producers, janitors (pun intended) should be ashamed and never let work in TV again. Go watch "The Head" instead. Also i really loved how the Captain said "i'm only doing my job" what job ? every murderer is free on that city! you kill someone, no problem let the police release you or not arrest you, we are not doing that on this Town!
Awful crime show (not true detective season 4, that is a disgrace).
Really enjoyed this season! Even more than the first one, which hardly passed the Bechdel test. The atmosphere of nighttime in the far north was perfectly and eerily created. It jolts the viewer, as you're never quite sure what time it is. This uneasiness feels in line with how someone says that the borders between the spirit world and physical world are thinner in Ennis. As with season 1, the seemingly mythical elements are actually psychological with rational explanations , but force you to grapple with bigger themes than addressed before: like how different groups and people conceive of the relationship between the living and the dead; how community is fostered or torn apart; what it means to be native to a place versus living in a place; and the role of vigilantism given governmental corruption. Cannot wait to watch again to see the clues that were dropped along the way.
i refuse to believe that this is true detective. this is one of those daily feel good dramatic tv shows for women target audience with some mysticism from alaskan culture.
Made the mistake of reading the IMDB comments. Lots of angry guys complaining about the big “Eskimo” cop somehow taking on someone who is twice her size. Obviously, these people don’t know who Kalis Reis is. I’d like to see them try.
I don't see what the whiners are seeing; I thought this was great and especially Jodie Foster was fantastic. Sure, the season is slow, but this isn't an action Jackson show and if you're just looking for your daily adrenaline fix, this show won't please you. The rest of us, though, may find plenty to enjoy here.
One season wonder. Watch the first Season of TD then skip all the rest because it's really terrible.
This season shows off a remarkably intriguing setting, solid production values, and a memorable duo of protagonists. Upon entering the quaint snowy town where everyone knows each other, I couldn't help feeling vague Twin Peaks vibes. While I understand that the mystery serves as a mere excuse for drama, I had at least hoped for the drama to be more captivating. The initial episodes felt particularly slow and dull, only to end up resolving most subplots in a hurry at the end, such as the generational conflicts with the stepdaughter or the young dedicated cop struggling with his wife waiting for him at home.
Although the underlying dynamics of the central case were quite engaging, the incorporation of supernatural elements felt forced and unimaginative, detracting from the overall experience. Overall a watchable season, but not to the point I would recommend it.
Finally I don't have to hear about how bad season 2 was anymore we have a new king i.e Season 4 Night Country
Not bad. I expected much better.
This was a very well made horror/mystery season. The acting was very good.
The story, the setting and the plot are extremely dark, and I'm not only talking about sun being down the whole season.
If you up for that kinda thing, you could give it a better rating than I did.
Instead of watching this trash season, check out the high-quality South Korean "Kings Of Pigs" - it's way better than this. You'll want to binge-watch it in just one day because it's so intense.
Well shot, well acted; not well written. I really understood the town of Ennis but not how our leads were able to actually solve anything. Heck, almost every lead in the case was hand delivered by the spirits.
True Detective season 4: Night Country was announced a few years after season 3. Interestingly, a new showrunner and writer named Issa López would write and direct all the episodes, who was responsible for a very good horror film called Tigers Are Not Afraid about ghosts and the Mexican drug cartel. This new season would star Jodie Foster as Detective Liz Danvers partnered but feuding with a Native American detective named Evangeline Navarro, played by former champion boxer Kali Reis, investigating the disappearance of male scientists at a research station in Alaska. There would also be a supernatural horror element and share faint connections with season 1. Suffice it to say that all this was very intriguing, but there was the downside of no creative involvement from Pizzolatto (He even denigrated it on Instagram. The guy really gives no ****s which isn’t all that surprising given some of the stuff he’s written haha).
While each season should be judged on its own merits, it’s still strange to have one with no involvement from the showrunner and writer of all previous episodes. In that sense, can Night Country really be called True Detective? Or is it just something that’s been fashioned into the series for name recognition? I suppose it’s all subjective. Sure, the atmosphere and subject matter kind of fits, but there are also clear indicators that this is a different creative voice from Pizzolatto. I feel like it should’ve just been its own series. In any case, Night Country has a decent spooky mystery plot and an expectedly great lead performance by Foster, though it clearly isn’t on the intellectual or psychological level of season 3, let alone season 1. It’s kind of on the level of 2 more or less, being plenty flawed but still interesting with some noteworthy elements. I didn’t really buy the revelations about the case, which were less than satisfying and don’t really make sense when you think about it, and I’m not entirely sure what the point was for all that. It ended up being surprisingly safe and kind of familiar with how it ended, especially these days. Night Country didn’t totally work for me and had lots of problems, but managed to stand out a bit in the modern television landscape due to the unique setting, creepy atmosphere, and some decent character development. I really have no desire to ever watch it again though, whereas I find revisiting the other seasons to be worthwhile. What is in store for the future of True Detective is a mystery, but it’s certainly been one of the most memorable and provocative series in television history.
Hilariously bad season. Dialogue is dull. Plot is basic. Many cheap horror scares. The whodunnit of the crime is actually funny, I thought the show was a comedy but I think it was serious. Many meaningless side characters instead of plot progression.
If you like the premise and environment, the movie Wind River is far superior.
Narrative driven same ol same.
Great season, but there are sci-fi/spiritual aspects that don't fit the "True Detective" style. This would have done better on it's own.
I loved the first episode! The setting of that season is fantastic! But it lost me completely after the first episode more and more with every episode. I don’t exactly know why but I was just bored watching every episode after the first one. Maybe it’s the writing or the story itself.
Maybe they should have included more of the paranormal elements or had more time in that arctic science lab. Would be more interesting for me, maybe.
It was an OK season. The different plots just kind of went in circles and finally made it to a disappointing conclusion.
I don't care what everybody else says, this season was awesome. Better than season 2 at the very least. The supernatural elements, Alaska, grittiness, the cast, .... Amazing. Only thing: it works better when you can binge it.
Night Country is an interesting season to review, and it obviously has become a lightning rod for controversy. While I would recommend filtering out the reactionary nonsense that seems to be omnipresent these days, I do think there are legitimate criticisms for this season. On one hand, the atmosphere and vibes are fantastic. The darkness and isolation from the eternal night and this edge of the world setting are fantastic, and there are some scenes in most episodes that utilize these to stunning effect. Even though I think some of the mysticism and supernatural elements don't always gel with the rest of the series, some of the imagery is effective. The acting is also pretty strong, with our two main female leads being the main standouts, especially Jodie Foster. The story, writing, and characters are where things get a bit murkier. I don't think they are nearly as bad as some reviewers would have you believe, but they are hardly perfect. The dialogue lacks the sharpness of season 1, but it doesn't devolve into the pastiche and pretension that suffused season 2 and to a degree season 3. There are lots of references to season 1 to try to anchor this season into the show, but they never really amount to much, and I almost wish the show was willing to stand on its own because it really does not need those references at all. While I think the story and characters overall have a satisfying arc, I also found myself annoyed at some of the side journeys and quests, some of the backstories and conflicts with other characters that seem purely there to generate conflict and tension because that's what Prestige TV requires. I feel like the show would have been better had it centered on the mystery and the relationship between the two detectives and the rest of the police, cutting out a lot of the extra fluff in the season that didn't land with the weight that I suspect that Issa López was expecting. I do like the thematic work in the show, especially with how the mystery seems to have its hooks in a lot of societal trends that are explored in a sharper way than similar shows, though I do feel like the ending was a bit too neat and easy for what the show was trying to say. Overall, I did enjoy it, and I think it's a good atmospheric true crime watch that doesn't necessarily hit the heights of season 1.
Was so hopeful for this season to be good. Started out interesting and as it went along, it just got more and more dense. By episodes 5 and 6 this thing jumps the shark so far, they're still looking where it went. This is what happens when you take a good series and you turn it over to a bunch a Clown World idiots. You go Eskimo girls! What a steaming pile of waste. Avoid, it's just going to piss you off. Shame on you Nic Pizzolatto for letting them take a large feminist dump all over your project.
The first series is one of the best TV series you can see and why? Because it was real. This shit just happens in the world and it's so ugly you don't need another mystery to get it. That in itself is just disgusting. A lot of that was helped, of course, by the duo of actors. So I'll happily watch this again and again.
Can't say the same for series 4, which I just finished watching. I have to say I really suffered through it and had to rewind a few sections because I just couldn't stand it. This isn't True Detective it's just a spinoff to the X-Files or a stand alone mystery series. If it was presented on its own I believe it is forgiven for a lot of its shortcomings, but as part of it it is not. I didn't mind the plot at all, or how it ended or who did it, etc. I would have believed it, but why I had to watch a jump scare horror movie I don't know.
Anyway, I believe that towns like this exist and that there are stories and traditions etc., but I don't believe that ghosts visit there. I admire people who can live like that because I wouldn't last a minute there. It's incredibly depressing. But it has to be said that if you want to disappear, you'll probably really disappear once and for all in a place like that.
Started off strong, but didn't stick the landing at the end, unfortunately. Loved the atmosphere of the setting and the tension build-up, just wish it all came together... Still enjoyed the ride overall!

I did not like this season
