This is the worst season of True Detective. First two were 10 out of 10 for me, but this one...
I can say only 1 thing: if you have trouble sleeping - this season (any episode) will resolve it immediately.
Just watch first episode and last one, you won't miss a thing.
WOW!! PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND WATCH THIS! I almost gave up on watching the third season because of how disappointing I found season 2 finale, but this was great!!! It was almost as good as s1, in some aspects even better, but maybe s1 remains my favorite because it has that psychodelic feeling to it that just resonates within me, but just so great.
Also the characterization was next level! I thought it was a different actor playing Mahershala, but it was HIM! Even the posture, the way they walked, the extra weight. How to get away with murder can take some notes after that awful make up they did in the show's finale.
And even when I thought the resolution was a little obvious they took things next level, honestly WOW!
Much better then season 2. Not quite up to season 1 but definitely better than season 2.
Really, the only complaint I have is the flashbacks. I don't generally like constant flashbacks and it takes a lot to really make them work. Season 1 had flashbacks but they were generally ok and mostly worked ok although I would have be happy if they didn't have them. Season 3 has them constantly! And, they flashback to 2 different time periods! And, they don't make it clear which period they're flashing back too! And, they don't work as well as they did in season 1.
I give season 3 a weak 7 out of 10 due to the flashbacks.
An effortless timeline based story blended with plenty of Lynchian atmosphere that focuses more on interpersonal relations between, mostly the lead, characters rather than any narrative innovation — settling for the usual; troubled rural family, corrupt industrialists, and the alcoholic mother. But the fine performances and the wonderfully decrepit industrial areas make up for that lack, spoiled in the end by a pathetic flashback/forward Nolanesque attempt to bring things full circle. The resolution is too simple, but still better than some other attempts at HBO like Big Little Lies and Mosaic.
Season 3 is ok. It's slow and I can only hear about half the dialogue even with the volume at 50.
Solid season with outstanding performances by most actors. It's a bit slow paced, but give this season a chance - you won't regret it.
I remember first watching this as it premièred on my 18th. I was invested to a point where I, like many others were disappointed in it's ending.
But damn did it sit with me. For 5 whole years. God it is genius and upon rewatching - it's makes so much sense thematically. Whilst the exceptional highs of S1 cannot be beaten, there is something to be said of the subtlety in this season's execution. It's a silent masterpiece of a season, in a show with a stagnant reputation for spectacle.
Beautifully done show. Third season is my favorite by far. They could have gotten to the ending a little quicker. American television almost always runs too long, but it pays off in the end. I rated it an 8. If it had been six episodes instead of eight, it would have been a nine.
another period cable show set in the 1980s/90s featuring a mustache'd scoot mcnairy who should've not only been nominated but won awards for the role
This being True Detective, there is a lot to praise – the aesthetics are top-notch, the sense of place is palpable, the acting is off-the-chart brilliant. And there are some interesting themes – racial tension, journalistic ethics, marriage, fatherhood, the shadow of the Vietnam War, old age. But this being Pizzolatto unfettered, there's a lot to criticise too – the glacial pace, the under-written female roles, the cod-philosophy, the (toxic) machismo, the clichés, the dreadful finale. The fact is that Pizzolatto (a novelist by trade) needs an exceptional director to turn his ideas into something resembling brilliance, to imbue his relatively quotidian script with a portentousness well beyond the written word. He needs a director with a keen enough vision to mask the fact that his scripts are actually pretty by-the-numbers. Season three illustrates this beyond all doubt. Season one had the vision of Cary Joji Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation, Jane Eyre, Maniac) who brilliantly directed all eight episodes, presenting a very thin story by way of such unforgettable and unsettling imagery that it made everything feel deeper and more profound than it really was. Season three has such a vision for two episodes; the first two, which are directed by Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room, Hold the Dark), who was also a showrunner until he abruptly departed after clashing with Pizzolatto (look out for a stunningly beautiful night-time shot of a search party walking through a field, torches moving in front of them – Sauliner gives the image a haunting fairy-tale-like quality). After these two episodes, directorial duties were split between Pizzolatto himself and journeyman TV director Daniel Sackheim. Season three without Saulnier (or Fukunaga) isn't as bad as season two, nowhere near, but it's still very weak, telling a threadbare story that it stretches out well beyond breaking point only to reward us with the limpest and most poorly written dénouement you can possibly imagine.

If you want to see season 1 again, just rewatch season 1. It will be way better than seeing this - slightly modified version with boring characters.
Season 2 was better than this.
Loveee it! :star_struck: Absolutely recommend every season of the True Detective!
Loveee . Absolutely recommend every season of the True Detective!
A solid season. I particularly loved the acting and the fact that in the end the mystery was just an excuse to talk about family and friendship. What a pity that Jeremy Saulnier didn't direct all the episodes, though.
The finale left me very broken. Everything is closed, but oh those final minutes! Anyway, I'd be glad if it still have another season (and not like the s2).
Good movie. I like it. But is no action, just crime story.
See, for my taste there's just way too much racial BS in this season. Hollywood is really obsessed with race. Everything is about it. True shame.

Don't think I'm alone when I say that I was blown away by the first season, but let down by the second. Very happy to say that the third season, while not quite as good as the first (yet), is back on track and I'm enjoying it immensely.
