The dating show that Dougie had made was absolutely amazing. That is absolutely a show that could have aired on Fox back in the day, lol.
LOL, I didn't expect that penis scene and the discussion of micropenises. Laughed so hard
love to the third degree, I lost it. Nathan for you is back!
This show marked a profound moment in my media-watching life. I have always said that good is good, and that genre did not matter to me. I have seen movies such as Thank You for Smoking and Don't Look Up, and I was at best indifferent to them. But this show made me realize just how much I hate satire that is longer than an SNL skit. It is as if they mixed together House Flippers with the (English) Office, and that isn't a compliment (for the record, I loved the latter. The satire is sooooo long and drawn out that it isn't interesting or entertaining in any way.
This was fun, weird, entertaining and new to me, however I think there was a lot going on and some jokes didn’t have room to breath between each other.
I really struggle with these "comedic awkwardness" shows at the best of times. I can't stand I Think You Should Leave and struggled through the opening few episodes of The Rehearsal, and The Curse lands directly between these two for me. While I can appreciate the commentary here on "faux-charitable" celebrities who are only helping to further their own image and clean their own conscience, the surreal and downright grating comedy just doesn't vibe with me. The tongue in cheek delivery about eco-first buildings that are heinously ugly, to the emasculating of the main character through his micropenis, it's all on message and on brand for this kinda comedy and Nathan himself, but it's just not for me. I might give it the first three episodes purely for Emmas performance and the fact it's made by A24, but I think it'll have to be when I have literally nothing else queued up to watch.
I read some reviews saying how this is one of the most uncomfortable shows of the year, so I was ready for it. It's not that excruciating. I don't like cringe comedy but I thought it was very funny. And I love the reality TV commentary .
was completely unprepared for a nathan fielder cock shot
I loved The Rehearsal so I was interested in the Curse when I found out about it recently and then even more interested when I saw Christopher Nolan's interview with Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie. It was the show that pushed me to get a trial subscription to Paramount+ to see if I can binge the show over the next 7 days.
Episode 1 is interesting and impressive in many ways but I wouldn't say that it was "enjoyable". Then again, it's the first episode so it doesn't need to be. Unlike The Rehearsal which leaned into the comedy much more, this is dramatic, awkward and at times shocking. I'd rather watch a smart series that has a considered story arc over the whole rather than something that starts out strong then peters out or is up and down the whole way.
Their is a lot that suggests this show is going to be something special, Emma Stone for a start, she is as perfect as everyone said she was. The other actors are great, even those who seem like they were plucked from the local community work perfectly. I think it shows the intelligence of the filmmakers that they can see each performer for who they are and don't try and blindly follow a script when the actor is giving something a little different. Nathan was on a chat show talking about a review where he was described as stiff but like he said on that show (amongst the joking around) was that the character he was playing was stiff as well. In the moments when Asher isn't performing for the news or documentary cameras, Nathan plays him with earnest conviction that is really quite impressive. I guess he is demonstrating that the Fielder technique, made "famous" in The Rehearsal, actually works.
So far so good, I'm not sure how to rate this episode, I have a feeling that the rating will depend on how it flows through to other episodes.
This was a stinker, made it through to the end but nothing hit home for me.
Nathan Fielder decided he was too famous so he starred in a show where he gets to be an unknown starring in a show.

This show gives me anxiety, I think that's intentional but it's intense. Not sure if the show is right for me, but I'll give it a few more episodes to feel it out.
