Rewatching the entire show and this might be the funniest season.
With The French Mistake, "Fight the Fairies" , Foster Daddy Dean or the low version of Excalibur... Season 6 is a real treat.
And Soulless Sam... He's definitely my favorite character. Not acting like Dean's sidekick it's refreshing. Plus, he's a full on D*ckhead!
The writers could have gone a bit further with the Campbell's storyline. I believe a full on episode could have been made out of their very long family history.
Erik Kripke hands the reins over to Sera Gamble as Supernatural returns for a sixth season and tries to find a new direction post-Apocalypse. Dean returns to the hunter lifestyle after discovering that Sam is back, and Crowley attempts to increase his power by finding Purgatory; meanwhile an angel civil war erupts as Castiel leads a rebellion. The show is kind of in a freefall, unsure of where to take the series after completing a five season arc. It abandons its Christian mythology and starts bringing in fairies, dragons, and alternate dimensions. Still, the writers come up with some really creative and fun episodes. Also, Mich Pileggi and Sebastian Roché join the cast as recurring characters, and there are several notable guest starts, including Robert Picardo, Robert Englund, and Brian Doyle-Murray. While Season 6 is entertaining and full of thrills, it remains to be seen if Supernatural can continue without the Apocalypse theme that has come to define the last few seasons of the show.
Season Six already and still the series is very good. Onward to season 7!

It's pretty apparent that Supernatural really ended at Season 5. This season from the get go is an attempt at keeping the show running despite the deserved "happy" end for Dean and the deserved fate for tainted Sam by completely destroying that.
The constant whining in all seasons is annoying but at least served a purpose in making the maincharacters more human, more relatable in the face of their hard lives, what they were up against. But in S6 it becomes simply dull and stupid.
Speaking of stupid: the plots are more often than not stupidity driven. There's no reason for Dean to be as stubborn as he is portrayed often times, especially regarding Castiel, and only for plot reasons to create conflict. Conflicts created with the sensitiveness of a 4 year old eating with a fork, mind you. Bringing back Crowley with yet another twist to survive is predictable and very tiring to watch, even if he is the "king of hell".
I watched S6 with the thought that I know it ended at S5 but I like "(supernatural) monster of the week" type of shows and assumed it will be worthwhile enough, ignoring the story of Sam and Dean Winchester that ended. But even so, the show - overall - deteriotates into mediocrity at best despite some exceptions. The issue lies mainly in the overall story that is cramped into the show now and the consequences within the episodes.
