I know Stranger Things was based on homages but for me unfortunately this season does not carry much suspense for this reason.
The bully trope might be fitting for the time it is supposed to play in but is it so incredibly worn out and simply boring. Also the storyline around Hopper and Joyce feels somewhat out of place and I am always glad when the story returns to Hawkins. I don't really understand why this was turned into such an outdated clishee instead of following the much more interesting idea of the russian side of the experiments. Why show a captured demogorgon and go to a prison break situation?
Also: Fred's ... haunting went way too fast from a viewers perspective and I just don't care for Vecna's victims.
On a lesser note: I thought it was such a nice idea to foreshadow tension between Lucas and the rest and conflict inside him in episode 1. I am kind of disappointed that it was basically not delivered on at all.
That being said I still like the investigation and slowly solving the mystery part.
If Vecna touches a single hair of my Max's, HE WILL HAVE TO SEE ME!! I DON'T ADMIT THIS TO HAPPEN!!!
PROTECT MAX AT AAAAAALLLLLL COSTS!!
its just me or is really that the design of Vecna looks like White Walker's leader. so similarities but instead of ice there's woody roots
Max not letting the others know about sharing similar symptoms of the previous two victims was dumb as fudge. Lucas acting like a douchebag just for the sake of fitting in in what he thinks is a cool group of guys feels like bending the core of his character too much. But, yeah, it's all for the plot's sake, so anything goes. This season sure is heavy on the clichés.
I absolutely love the horror and gore vibe of this season, but, apart from that, it's really not convincing me, story and character-wise.
they're right... blip is a funny word
[7.5/10] Poor Eleven. She’s easily the strongest character this season, and the one most worth investing in, and season 4 puts her through a parade of horribles. I’m not complaining exactly. Seeing characters suffer makes their ultimate triumphs more meaningful, but it’s hard to watch at places.
Mike is...not as his best here. I want to be sympathetic to the kid. What he experienced with Eleven would be upsetting, especially if you’ve been away from someone for a while. But we, the audience, see what she’s been going through, so it’s hard to see her receive something less than total support than one of the people she cares most about.
At the same time though, the “You won’t say you love me!” bit between the two of them is a little much. I get that they need some place to go with this relationship, but it’s not crazy for fifteen-year-olds not to say the L-word. That said, it’s also totally normal for fifteen-year-olds to flip out about who is or isn’t saying the L-word, so it’s a fair storyline. More than anything, it’s another sign that Eleven is at her lowest point, feeling like the world, including her boyfriend, sees her as a monster.
Mike starts to redeem himself a little, reassuring Eleven, promising her he’ll make things right when she gets arrested, and chasing after her when she gets hauled away to juvie. But he also contributes to her complex. When she feels like a monster, he declares her a superhero. She responds “not anymore”. She feels less-than having lost her powers, and it makes her more likely to go through whatever procedures Sam Owens has come up with to restore them, since she’s under the misimpression that it’s where her value comes from.
It’s sad to see a good kid in a tough situation treated harshly and eventually railroaded by the police. Again, the audience knows what Eleven’s been through, which makes it extra difficult to watch them arrest a fifteen-year-old and treat her like a wanton criminal. There’s some not so subtle subtext to the treatment she receives, and it makes you feel extra.
At the same time, there’s great relief when Sam Owens shows up to de facto rescue her from the ordeal. Paul Reiser is so good here. He strikes the tone of convivial warmth, with a side dish of potentially shady government guy. He has instant credibility as an ally, and he’s the right mouthpiece to puff up the threat of Vecna and the importance to getting Eleven back to full strength to be able to fight it and help save the world again. It’s a little too convenient that he has a method to bring her powers back, but you’re glad he finds Eleven if the end, even if it means she has to leave her friends behind for now, and risk leaving them behind forever.
Nothing else in the episode is quite to that level, but there’s more subplots worth a damn here than in the last episode. Jason the basketball star is still a walking cartoon character, but I like Lucas’ dilemma. He wants to be part of the cool kids, and do what it takes to fit in, but also to protect his friends. That means walking an awkward line, trying to warn his friends in advance, and play both sides when he’s not entirely sure where his loyalties lie. The shtick with Jason and company roughing people up is meh, but Lucas’ discomfort with his new running buddies, mixed with the urgency of what’s going on, is a good note for him.
I’m less up on the junior detective routine this week. There’s definitely a raising of the stakes with the signs that Vecna is after Max, with the same clock imagery. And I appreciate that we get some more details or at least hints about what’s going on. Victor Kreel isn’t the killer himself, but rather one of its victims. Vecna is apparently feeding on people who’ve experienced some kind of guilt or trauma. And there’s a particular resonance to Kreel’s house, which he thought was haunted, and has some kind of duplicate in the Upside Down. I’m better the house was knocked down and the trailer park built in its place.
But the ways we get these details is less than inspired. Max plying her school counselor for information is fine, but not particularly exciting. Robin continues to be a fun character, talking about her lack of filter and having the smarts to check the Weekly World News equivalent for historical info about Kreel. But she gets saddled with Nancy who’s continued her transformation into a dull, proto-Rory Gilmore type.
Plus, god help me, I really hope that all of this Nancy/Jonathan drama, followed by Steve still hunting fruitlessly for The One, does not turn into a Steve/Nancy reunion. Their shtick was some of the worst parts of the first season, and Steve is much better playing off the other characters than off Nancy. To the point, his and Dustin’s conversation about this whole entanglement is fantastic, is better than any further love triangle B.S.
Speaking of B.S., the Hopper, Joyce, and Murray portion of the show continues to feel like we’re marching in place. I’ll give their subplot this much -- the scene where Hopper pulls his shackles off his broken foot is legitimately wince inducing, and shows what Hop is suffering to make this work. We also learn the Russian guard’s motivation for colluding with him -- he just wants the cash. It’s not very exciting or interesting, but it is at least plausible.
All we get from Joyce and Murray is some tepid airplane humor. Though Murray’s lame excuses for why he happens to be in California and making risotto for the Byers family are a solid laugh. And his reactions to the back-and-forth at the dinner table are a highlight.
Otherwise, I’m still a little underwhelmed by Vecna, if only because the CGI and design work on him comes off a bit less-than-convincing. And the opposing military guy who’s convinced that Eleven is causing the deaths in Hawkins rather than their best chance to stop them comes off as fairly generic in the scenes where he’s hassling Dr. Owens.
Overall, the Eleven material continues to carry the season, and is good enough to boost this episode, but the other material doesn’t rise much above “pretty good” territory.
this episode has been soooo funny, but then that end struck me.
& right now im over here like: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
also, with this episode, they've truly hit this sort of mood that i can't describe, i can't bring it into words, but it's just perfect
mike is so irritating. I hope they don't kill off max
"Us ladies will stick together. Unless, you think we need you to protect us"
sadly this is going the woke route too. but turning a blind eye to this crap, it's a strong show this season too
I forgot who this kiddo-person is entirely.
But interesting the “grown ups” actually are up to date and know what is going on. And again, great sleuthing by the “kids”.
Just hoping Max will be ok.
During the diner scene, was thinking “”ouu this is gonna be like empire with eleven having to go away to train on her own instead of staying with the friends” - Then duffers confirm by literally using the same quote
Season 1 made Christmas lights scary, and now I can never look at Grandfather clocks the same way again. If Max dies, we riot!
Also, Jason says they’re not killers like Eddie? Uh, bullshit. You’re a jock; being a killer is your whole identity. But still, good on Lucas for leading them astray for Eddie & Dustin’s sake.
Well, it's getting somewhat better. Things seems to be settling into a rhythm again.
The show is at it's best in fun little set pieces: Steve and Dustin still seem like a lot of fun and pairing Nance and Robin seems cool. Lucas harming others while trying to fit in is a bit of a stretch, but also a somewhat believable slippery slope.
I don't care for Eleven since season 1 and Hopper should be dead already, it's ridiculous. Dope head Jonathan is annoying and useless.
Also a lot of dumb Hollywood-summer-blockbuster-over-the-top-buildup at the end for some reason:
"This evil, it's like a virus. It just keeps coming back stronger." Are they talking about the Netflix execs that demand the Duffer brothers churn out more half-assed episodes of this show?
Where have I seen this Vecna before?
was that arrest legal? And that interrogation?
I really hope I won't see that clock in my dreams
Please don't ! nonono Max NO !
This one is a tremendous improvement over the start of the season, especially when it comes to El. As always, the teen relationship angst has been the worst part of the season, but it's mostly in the rearview mirror at this point. I hope.
So if I understand correctly, this demon has been around since 1959. Therefore has nothing to do with the upside down. So this show is simply fighting demons now? Aka, becoming cliché with known characters.
Oh how I missed the Steve and Dustin banter. Robin's character is absolutely unnecessary. What a waste of screen time that could've went to literally anybody else. IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO MAX, I WILL RIOT!
Good to see more characters interacting together. We're also really getting into the meat now.
Steve, Dustin and Robin are my favourite comedic trio <3
I will never comprehend how the shallow Steve from season 1 has turned out to be the character with the best connections and most meaningful friendships: Dustin/Steve & Robin/Steve are literally just top tier. His character growth honestly still blows my mind
Could’ve been a lot better. 3/10.
Hopefully it’s not that Mike can’t say I love you to Eleven because he loves Will lol. Okay Robin likes girls but Will suddenly liking Mike more than as a friend. Is just forced and a waste of Will after all he went through.
I still think that, watching the season again.
El training arc go!!!!! I'm excited to see her train with Sam. El's emotional turmoil about feeling like a monster while slightly out of step this season does feel like a logical conclusion she would make given her difficulties truly connecting with others. Especially being away from friends like Max in Hawkins. I do think Sam's speech at the end about her being a svior of hawkings felt a little canned. but his speech, in the end, felt more like it was written because it was the end of the episode rather than something he would say to El. It was very aggrandized in a way the context of the scene didn't support so it lacked the emotional honesty of a genuine connection between characters.
In case anyone was curious I'm still on the Will-Lucas defence squad. Lucas is making it very hard to root for him though. I was kinda hoping this season would subvert some of my expectations about its framing of jocks. Mason honestly felt pretty chill all around he loved his girlfriend and was a little corny but never seemed like a raging bully. If the basketball guys weren't douchebags If the basketball guys weren't assholes it would complicate the season and Lucas being caught between those two worlds wouldn't feel as one-sided
I feel like Will is lowkey becoming the Jonathan of the Party. He's a character who really should have more going on but feels relegated to background status for the past two seasons. He has some emotional drama with his friendship with Mike but no independent screen time or secondary characters attached to him. I do wish Will and El's sibling relationship could have been explored here even a little bit. Like who else knows what it feels like to be othered and violently bullied because they're different (even more so than Mike)? Like he spent all of season 2 being called Zombie boy at school because of what happened in the Upsidedown but the two have no real moments together which I think is a missed opportunity to give Will more of a presence this season outside of pining for Mike.
This show really did a Steve-Nancy jumpscare on us, didn't they? Thank god they sidestepped that. I did say one of my season 4 hopes and dreams was Steve not getting a love interest (and I'm glad he hasn't) but I do think his obsession with romance may be stagnating his character a tiny bit. There are other things you can pull out of someone for human drama and I wish they would try giving Steve more on that front. The romance obsession may come to something more interesting on his end so I'm holding out hope it'll play out satisfactorily.
Nancy remains a character I don't hate but don't love either. Her interactions with Robin just highlighted that she doesn't really have a spark that makes me latch onto some other characters in the show. Robin even without significant character exploration or story arcs is instantly charming to me while Nancy falls a bit flat. Don't get me wrong she's far away from characters in this show I actively hate but her storylines are less and less interesting to me
this shit is getting juicy now, boys and girls
every moment this season predictably goes exactly where you think it will and takes a longass time getting there
Tell me please that Joyce dies and quick !!!!
I hate that women
Huge improvement compared to the previous one ! Again, typical episode, but a good one. A lot more is happening everywhere, and almost each part is good.
Everybody's investigating and snooping around, with good results. Even if it looks different, the clock in the shrink's home is a direct parallel to Vecna's. Coincidence ? All victims were seeing her too. Correlation (past traumas) or causation ?
Hopper part is interesting too, though unrelated.
A Satanic Panic vibe with the basketball team chasing freaks.
Robin's teaming with Nancy is a great improvement for Nancy, well, like she was for Steve. Looks like she can make the parts with any of the dull characters interesting. And big discovery, the Upside Down and its bleeding into Hawkins is much older than we thought.
Max is (one of) the next target. Did she really say nothing to the others ? Quite stupid and uncharacteristic.
I didn't remember the doctor being that nice, but that was a nice moment with Eleven. His speech (and preparedness) is quite surprising. Though I would have assumed the police/feds were tracking him.
This season starts soooo much better than season 3. Let's hope they can keep this up! I'm loving it!
The stakes keep raising in ways both logical and unexpected. Hoping they don’t take the rest of the first half to get the gang all together again.
Tell me I am not the only one who hears Tom Cruise when Mason Dye speaks.
Hitting me with those Resident Evil vibes this episode. Just trade 'Maxxxx' for 'Starrrrs'.
Loved all scenes with Robin. She is a delight.
Man Eleven has spent a lot of this season so far crying.
spliting caracters! YES!
i hate how they repeat the drama of Sport teenage asshoe
