Law & Order: Season 6

6x04 Jeopardy

Being completely detached and logical is not the right way to judge. In the profession of judging.

Judges can also be fallible. They could be going through mental problems or life problems. Like divorce or addiction or blackmail or fraud or worse.

The Double jeopardy law in real life means you can't try someone for the same crime twice. It's there to supposedly protect an individual from the state continuously prosecuting someone.

But this law is in motion mostly to cover the backs of the justice system. They think they are so right and were so right the first time with their evidence and witnesses and logic and judgement and jury system. Yet they could in actuality be wrong. And often are wrong. Yet they can't retry the crime later if they have solid or conclusive evidence.
