I'm not sure I buy the idea that the existence of gossip girl reporting on these students would somehow make them nicer to the teachers. Beyond some heavily expository dialogue at the beginning and some bad acting choices (especially from the teachers who look like they're barely any older than the students), it's an engaging new take on the show.
I was really drawn into the relationship between Julien and Zoya, and a handful of the other in-group characters are fairly well-established already, except for Monet and Luna who seem to just act as Julien's assistants and have no distinct personalities yet.
In any case, this looks like a fun new take on the show.
no series will ever replace the original gossip Girl and specially not this trashy reboot, oh god the storyline is just awful don't like the characters maybe the sisters I kinda liked them but the rest are just ..... ughh pls cancel it now, it won't be successful as 1st gossip Girl
Wow, this was awful.
I put off watching this for a while and I wasn't wrong. Motivation for the characters doesn't make sense - people don't get nicer by bullying them - they get harder, teachers should know that.
And Julien being nicer at the end doesn't make any sense like at all.
Telling the audience who Gossip Girl is (considering the havok "she" is causing the person needs to be a sociopath or at least borderline sociopath.
Aside from that, I don't feel any pull towards the characters. The original Show had characters you could connect with, they were portrayed as assholes, but they also had personality and I could imagine doing the things they do given the right circumstances.
I can’t imagine a world in which a gossip girl reboot would be anything but extremely awful
So basically they try to live out the nostalgia of Gossip Girl and they don't even try to hide it. The teachers plot is absurd and they all act very bad. Luna and Monet characters are so insipid that hurts. Or they really lift up the second episode or this will die before is starts.
I am big fan of the OG Gossip Girl and when this show came out, i thought well, maybe i will give it a shot. I managed to forget about it and just recently remember and thought to give it a shot.Nothing compared to the original. The first episode was slow and the acting is questionable. I am determined to watch the two seasons, so fingers crossed it gets better as the season progresses.
Okay I avoided this reboot for a while just because I love the og sosososo much but after this episode, I’m all in. I think it was updated wonderfully and did so in a way that honored the original while retrofitting it to new (Gen Z) audiences. I was a little startled by how minimalist it was since the og was so maximalist, but that goes to show you how tastes change. Less equals (and is worth) more in today’s image of wealth.
I appreciate how much more diverse the cast is as well, background actors and the main cast alike. Nonwhite characters in this reboot aren’t relegated to the best friends of white characters who disappear after a few seasons (thinking specifically of Kati and Iz in the og). Of course, there is some obstruction of the relationship between race, wealth, and class, but Gossip Girl as an entity has always had a limited take on class anyway and a nonexistent one on race, let alone how it relates to social status and the experiences of Black and brown people in New York City.
I also love the dynamic between Zoya and Julien! Luna and Monet are right: family drama is the oldest type of rivalry and the most engaging. I’m excited to see where this leads as it is a play off of Blair and Serena. Of course, this time, there is some retrospective on how that played out because of how much more tech savvy these teens are. But drama always prevails, as we see at the end of the episode.
I heard that the teachers are insufferable as characters and as actors and, while I agree, I strangely love the teachers’ cringey acting?? It complements the fact that they are behind this new iteration of Gossip Girl, who has always had a flair for the cliché and roll-your-eyes wit that a millennial teacher would definitely use on social media to get back at entitled, nepo baby students students who spend all their time on there anyway.
The biggest problem I have with it is the teachers storyline. Other then that, it's okay. I will definitely be watching more.
