Ok, feels like it started scared of its own hugeness, with rushed and didascalic conversations to then slowly build up its identity. Hopefully they will dig deeper into the more philosophical aspects that they introduced in the last third of episode!
The Foundation is essentially what Elisabet Sobeck was trying to establish before Ted Faro screwed everything up.
If you understood that reference, I like you.
Sublime. Finally something that doesn't loiter around and gets straight to the point.
Amazing new series, very good pilot episode. 8/10
Heady ideas meet first-rate spectacle. A grand start to a potential new sci-fi TV great.
I enjoyed this. Had me hooked from the opening minutes. It's rare I find a show that does that to me these days. Excited to see what comes next.
Promising start to this epic new show. I was really looking forward to it since the first time I heard about it last years. I was definitely not disappointed. Interesting story, beautiful visuals and soundtrack.
Everyone's super chill about the 100 million dead people, huh.
Saw the trailers for this and was blown away! How the hell did David S. Goyer get Apple to fund this?! So how was it?
To be honest the pilot feels very empty, it's absolutely gorgeous to look at and the destruction of the elevator looked amazing but I'm not struck in a big way like I was watching the Game of Thrones pilot. If you're a sci-fi nerd, like me, you're gonna wet your pants at the gorgeous scenery and the fantastic ships and costumes. It's hard sci-fi (like Roman from Party Down would say), but to regular viewers it's going to be repulsive due to how fast paced it is and how everyone besides Gaal don't really create too much of a character to be like "I want to see their journey."
The series isn't terrible and contains some solid performances from Lou Llobel, with an amazing rivalry given by powerhouse actors Jared Harris and Lee Pace (Lane Pryce vs Joe MacMillan, I need to see that). And the detail that went into this series shows this wants to be like Dune, an ambitious adaptation that meets up to its anticipation. However, Goyer and company's greeting episode feels cold and resistant into welcoming the broad audience it requires to keep going.
David S. Goyer wants 8 seasons, but from these first two episodes, I haven't seen anything giving me a vibe where I feel like this is the next big phenomenon. And Apple seems to be betting their money on turning this into one of their flagship shows, their Game of Thrones (which is what Amazon will be doing with both Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings, while the lousy Paramount Plus will have the Halo series fighting for the title of next TV phenomenon).
My only hope is that this takes the same turn as its fellow sci-fi series For All Mankind, we get a lackluster first season that is far from prestige to finally getting an excellent drama with its second season. I think Goyer can learn from his mistakes here and try to create a series that can develop a following to warrant eight seasons, because at the moment it's like Westworld, the show everyone thought was going to blow people away that turned out being the empty series that gains a steady enough audience who are in it purely for the CGI. Well, besides that CGI, I'm not sure what Foundation has to offer.
Great start. You can give Gaal the Emmy now.
Amazing first episode, the visuals are some of the best Ive ever seen, even in high budget movies.
Does anyone know if they're gonna do just the first book, or try to go through more than one?
I don't remember any of this, or how much I read (40+ yrs ago). I remember a secret Foundation, thought to be un-reachable on the opposite side of the galaxy was based much closer to home. So frustrating! Why do I remember it being on Earth, and nothing about evil emperors?
Anyway, I'll enjoy this -- finally an adaptation that promises to be Science Fiction, neat...not watered down.
So far this seems like an interesting series. I have not read the books, so I'm coming into this with fresh eyes and I like it so far. Interested in seeing what the old man's master plan is...
Wow! I am not sure whether to read the book now, or wait. Fantastic!
Promising...
I love the books so much, so I won't judge this based on one episode, but...it's promising.
Very interesting premise - predicting the future of a society through science, and setting the steps that could lead to a more favorable outcome. Good twist on the old question of how much is predestined and how much due to our own free will.
The episode starts pretty slow, honestly I was confused a bit, but it works out at the end. And the visuals are stunning. The various worlds represent parts of humanity - fear of science, religious doctrine, terrorist acts... and the trinity of the empire... gives me the creeps.
I'll definitely keep watching.
Didn’t like this at all. I’m going to give it a few more episodes though. Seemed needlessly complicated for what is really a simple story. Visually stunning but that’s at the expense of the storytelling.
I rolled my eyes exactly 0 times during this episode, which in this day and age, is quite the accomplishment. Very solid start.
The show is visually stunning, at first the plot was a bit messy but in the second half of the episode it became quite interesting. The main character is likable, so we cheer up for her, but she also seems rather principled, determined and follows what she believes is right, regardless of consequences. There are some important questions and issues touched upon in the show, so it is thought-provoking and not only entertainment. I have never read the books but I found this first episode engrossing.
The Empire is 12,000 years old? I wonder what the Earth year is.
This first episode wasn't too bad. I'm not sure I'll keep watching though, it was a bit boring
Looks like it could be pretty good, I'm considering rewatching the first episode.
I read the first book of Asimov's Foundation a few years ago and thought it was an okay tale of space politics. It didn't entice me to read any other entries in the Foundation series.
But, I've been having this nagging feeling that I needed to try to find something current on TV, something/anything new that doesn't end up being just another soap opera series, heavy on drama, that drags on and on. I have tried a lot of different shows but only a few have been interesting to me, Season One of "The Terror", "Chernobyl", "Calls", and "Castle Rock".
This first episode of Foundation was slow, which I expected. It was also beautiful to look at, which I expected. The characters from the book did not match up with the actors and actresses of this episode. I understand why many feel the need to see characters from an 80 year old book updated culturally. I don't, but I'm older. That said, I think the cast that was chosen did a good job.
Jared Harris and Lee Pace do not disappoint in two of the lead roles. I'm going to continue watching this, at least for a few more episodes.
This will obviously not be a one-to-one translation of books to movie. Some of this first episode was from Trial of Hari Seldon, some of it from book one. I am guessing over the course of the first season we'll see the struggle to begin the work of the Foundation, and may get some hints of the second here and there. The actual existence of the second will be revealed at end of Season with emergence of the Mule, and likely Daneel reveal.
The turn of events was a bit confusing to me, but you can tell it gonna be good.
I jumped on this show without having read the book by Isaac Asimov and I felt it was an "okay" start. Surely this episode is just setting the "foundation" (I know I'm funny) for the next episode, as most of time we were looking back 35 years ago.
The special effects are gorgeous and I ended up pausing sometimes just to look at them in detail. Apple surely isn't joking around when it comes to their streaming service.
Still, the episode finished with me wanting more, let's see what the next episode brings to the table.

There were a few messy jumps, that could have done with a little more story, but I guess it is what it is. Not sure how much of the original story they had to speedrun, but hopefully it slows down in later episodes.
