Season 1 is pretty good, looking forward to a second season.
It's a bit like Dexter.. but different and that's not a bad thing.
Vivid characters and the unique tone of utter disgust from Joe Goldberg make this show so unpleasant yet so addictive to watch,
Season 1 of "You" tells the story of Joe Goldberg and Guinevere Beck. Joe's working at a book store along with Ethan when Beck wanders inside. In the first few minutes there is a definite strong chemistry between the two and it seems to suggest a boring old love story with the two main characters. However, soon the charismatic and charming Joe shows his true intentions, when he starts following closely and working his way in the life of Beck. Even at first this behavior seems strange as he's trying to picture himself as a person that is close to her and seems to know everything about her life. He's waking up with her, goes to work with her, "hangs out" with her friends and even is there when she's with her boyfriend. The story uses our everyday social network lives quite interestingly as most of the information comes from posts that are known publicly and Joe is able to use Beck's unprotected laptop and phone in order to gain knowledge about the object of his affection.... after doing something not quite legitimate in order to gain access to Beck's apartment
In these first episodes we are also introduced to some of the background characters like Joe's neighbors Claudia and her son Paco, her abusive boyfriend Ron and the "Sex and the city" group of Beck's friends. Most of the secondary characters are quite plain and their stories being not so interesting, with the exception of Peach. She's quite interesting and I would prefer if the season had more of her and the battle between her and Joe. Maybe the best episode that shows this is the 5th one "Living with the Enemy" and also the 6th "Amour Fou" which I think is the best one in this season. The quiet game that goes on in the secluded house of Peach is written and acted out perfectly. Joe seems like a regular psychopath with his wounds from the previous events with Ron and the car crash he was in. Also the concussion and his visions place perfectly in the big house where Peach and Beck are settled. Maybe the only thing that was out of place with Peach was the easy way Joe was able to get into her password protected laptop that she uses for work. Like...really...who puts such a password outside of movie world... sigh...
Beck's character is what should be expected in such stories. A poor girl from small town, wanting to succeed as a world famous author in the big city with most of the struggles we know she would have. The professor she works with is a sexual predator, the rich boyfriend doesn't have any romantic relationship with her, her friends are looking down on her for not being the same as them. There are some slightly interesting things happening here like her father addiction and (not quite) death, standing up for her professor and later on agent she was introduced to. Also there is the whole thing with the breakup with Joe and his obsession with her therapist. However I couldn't see anything about her that would make me care until the season finale and she remains a bit plain for me as a main character
Unfortunately there is nothing interesting in the back stories (which is probably intentional, so the main focus is on Beck and Joe), as these are just kinda there... The abusive ex-parole officer and the neighbors goes exactly as expected, Blythe and Ethan are just
there, whatever the names and stories of Beck's friends are unimportant. There are a couple of episodes featuring Claudia's friend Karen that were nice, but soon we are back to the main "protagonists". Also there was an episode showing that Beck is not the first time Joe went to great lengths for a girl and we are left wandering if Candace is still alive or if Joe doesn't keep his promise of not hurting anyone he loves
In general the first season was interesting and am looking forward to see where the story is going with Joe
4/5
Absolutely loved this series. A few episodes in I was considering dropping it, but thankfully Blythe wasn't anywhere near as big of a character as I expected her to be. Had they dragged her on I'd have dropped the series like I did with Dexter. There are some characters I just cannot stomach and she was one of them.
I never liked Peach and her cronies either, but they where built that way from the ground up so I can't fault that.
There are a handful of moments at best which are a little hard to believe, but the same can be said for anything in this genre.
Hopefully the second season is just as good, though I think I'll leave a bit of a gap before I dive into it.
It is mostly similar to Dexter series
Painfully hard-to-believe, but this train wreck in slow motion is still fun to skim-watch if only to see how the drama plays out. You're honestly better off sticking to the NoSleep Podcast for your fix of this genre of thriller.

Not disappointed by the ending. But the entire season, while entertaining, did disappoint all in all. The side stories I couldn't have cared much less about, pretty much all of the characters are unlikeable. They do get me to care about the protagonist a little, though, which makes it at least watchable.
Would not ever watch again.
