I have no idea why the writers thought introducing a male character to hook up with Vanessa just for one episode is a good idea - only one episode after Vanessa and Susan kissed! But it's SyFy, I should have known better. Queerbaiting at its best.
And Doc is really annoying since a few episodes... I liked her at first and thought she is a strong and loyal character. I guess I was wrong.
