What the heck happened? Prior to watching this, I read some reviews online; all praising this season. (Just a word of advice, never do that, it only affects your bias ). So I had pretty high expectations. And boy was I so wrong.
Say what you will but despite the shortcomings of the first season, this show was truly unique and felt fresh when it first premiered. I genuinely enjoyed the first season. The charming, charismatic performance with a fantastic score were all cherry on top. However as such is the trend nowadays, the popularity of the first season led to high expectations which led to the great disappointment that this jumbled mess of a season with countless inconsistencies and some 'questionable' performance by Ellen page(vanya) along with a subpar writing is.
Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions, in fact some of my friends loved this way more than the first season which also seems to be the general consensus of most of the viewers, however, it was a let down and a 5/10 'meh' for me. I just hope 'The Boys: Season 2' doesn't follow a similar route.
Maybe this redeems itself with season 3 especially after what happened at the end of season 2 but I remain pessimistic.
The first season of the show was really fun, without being especially groundbreaking. But the birth of this group of misfits with powers they hardly even know how to use had a special dimension that went beyond fucking entertainment.
In this second season, which follows the main plot of the second volume of the comic, "Dallas", there is a clear intention to maintain the good results of the first. But it is scattered, somewhat chaotic, with absolutely unnecessary plots that slow down the pace of the series (Ellen Page was already a casting error in the first season and seems even more lost in this second). There is also an attempt to introduce more "serious" issues, taking advantage of the fact that the action takes place in the sixties of racism (with a certain parallel with today) and political conspiracies.
It is a disappointing season, which step by step has been moving away from the comics (perhaps with the intention of making their stories independent to be able to continue in successive seasons, since the third volume is the last of the comics). But this independence is its biggest flaw.
Really love the choices of the music, very fitting for the different scenes. :thumbsup_tone1:
Season 2 felt like a bad rehash of season 1. It's not identical, and in many ways, it's a kinder, gentler (and weaker) version of the first season...but a lot of the motifs were the same. Which season does this describe?-- The siblings are uncomfortably estranged from each other while Five struggles to get them to come together in the face of an impending apocalypse, but they're all too preoccupied with their own lives (Allison, her family by marriage and career; Vanya, a romance of discovery, Klaus manic pixie hoboing around; Diego with an even dumber hero complex; attempted murder by the Commission; Reginald is a distant, mysterious, and malevolent figure...), coming together around the time that their stupid projects start to converge to create the predicted apocalypse. There's a fight scene to an unexpected, peppy song. There's a sibling-cutesy scene with dancing to another fun old song. Hmm.
At least we got to see more Ben, who did have some nice scenes. On the other hand, prolonged fart joke as a plot point. The choice of music was strong, but not as fun and varied as the previous season (obviously that's like a double-subjective opinion). Good enough to watch, but underwhelming and made me just want to go back and enjoy season 1 again instead
Continuations are rarely better or on par but this has been so freaking well done, in my opinion.
It’s like the first season was like one of those ghost or theme houses – one very well done and exciting but without an actual theme so you stumble adrenaline pumped from one room to the next, utterly confused but enjoying whatever is happening to you.
This one is more like an actual theme house, or park for that matter. Lots of surprises around each corner, sometimes you'll get a bucket full of water in your face and you probably don't leave the way you came in, BUT somehow it makes a lot of sense as you go along.
And it makes you want to go to the next house.
Better than the first season in almost every way. Enjoyable from start to finish, never felt like it was dragging. Lots of good uses of humour, some good twists, nice action, and a great soundtrack.
The Harlan/Sissy stuff is probably the only thing I really didn’t like this season. The Vanya/Sissy love angle felt misplaced and unnatural. There was zero chemistry there, and it made no sense. And the whole Harlan thing just felt boring and uneventful.
The most interesting part of the season was easily the stuff with Reginald. I hope they focus on him more next season.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable season of television.
There’s a vast disagreement regarding this season on both sides of the spectrum, but in my opinion, I highly enjoyed this season far better than the first, and I didn’t have very many qualms with the first. Character development was better this go around and the interactions between siblings were far more enjoyable, as well. Personally, I felt this was a win for both the cast and writers this season.
Pros:
- Diego and Lila
- this season wasn't as predictable as the first
Cons:
- the only reason it wasn't predictable was because I didn't know wtf was happening
- like for real, can these people pick a struggle
Worse than previous one. But there are some kick ass scenes.
I thought the first season was fairly entertaining and had the right tone for a superhero series (I am always in for dysfunctional families). However, the second season already saw a significant shift in tone. Just like most popular shows, they went full throttle with shameless meme material, fart jokes, and phoned in writing to stretch the plot for as long as possible. The plot is almost carbon copy (the world will end, but we have to find out how), just without any kind of subtlety or tension. The problematic relationships between the Hargreeves made the first season interesting, but the writers decided to use amnesias and new love stories to reset the situation conveniently. People we thought were dead have survived, and people who didn’t make it still manage to appear again as we can always move back to the past….pretty much it’s all as if the whole first season never happened. I think it took me over half a year to get to the season finale.
The Commission felt inexistent, and the Swedish dudes are so forgettable that it was almost like there was no real threat for most of the season. It gets slightly better in the last few episodes, though.
6,6/10 - personal rate for this season
I just realized that at least in this character, Ellen Page looks a hell of a lot like Ron Howard's brother Clint. It's the forehead...
I've just finished watching this season, and the problem I'm having w/ it is the problem I w/ all shows of this type: Whenever time-travel or magic is involved, anything can and will happen over the course of a season, but it can all be undone in 30 seconds by traveling back in time or using magic to sidestep the consequences. It makes the entire show hardly worth watching, as there's no real drama or suspense, b/c everything can be reverted back to the way it was or, at least, to a version prior to cataclysmic events having taken place. It just comes across as a really lazy way to write a show.
The biggest problem with this season are all the time travel tropes. If not for that, I probably would have enjoyed it more. I was fairly happy to see Vanya and Allison being so happy with their new found loves, but then of course they all pull some reason out of their a** on why they can't come with them to the future, even though it's obviously the best thing to do. But as the finale provided us with one of the biggest time travel tropes ever, it was probably better that way. Honestly, I hate time travel stories in which people change something and suddenly the whole future is screwed up. There is so much potential in this show, which feels a bit wasted this season thanks to it being so trope heavy. I enjoyed watching it mostly because the characters are interesting and unique, not because of the plot.
I liked this season more than the first one. I mean, both are really good, but I just enjoyed seeing a lot more interactions and bonds between this siblings. Klaus and Five are still my favs, but Ben and Diego got me in this season too xD Also, Allison was so much more enjoyable, in the first seaon I didn't like her that much, this has changed totally <3
A lot of people didn't like Vanya at all. Personally, I think that her akward side it's part of her character. It's a perfect representation of how they showed us she was in the first season, but without all her trauma lurking her, since most of the season she dosen't remember anything.
Also, The Handler is one of my faves too. Really great.
Just finished the last episode of season 2.
Really enjoyed it. Gets a little bit confusing, but worth the watch.
Hope season 3 will be announced soon. :thumbsup_tone1:

Vanya is the worst part about this season.
