If you had to use one word to describe the first season it's definitely "inconsistent". The first 6 episodes were enjoyable and Episodes 5 and 6 in particular were excellent. But then just as you think the show has found it's stride and you're hyped to binge the remaining four episodes you get a whole new story, a major change of tone and a ton of new characters that at best you don't care for or who at worst actively irritate you every time they're on screen. So not only are you suddenly watching what feels like an adaptation of a poor YA novel, you're then left to wonder by the end as to what this show will be in the future, is this the promising show you watched in the first 6 episodes? Or is it the usual Netflix teen drama with a bit of extra angst?
One of the most wildly inconsistent and disappointing seasons of TV I've ever seen. Episode 1 was filled with intrigue and potential, but the following 3 episodes completely missed the mark and felt mundane and generic - none of the intrigue from the first episode carried over. Then, just as I thought the show was going to stay that way, episodes 5 and 6 were absolutely fantastic! Unique storytelling with great characters, acting, and writing. But then the final 4 episodes came along and were easily the worst 4 episodes of the show - filled with juvenile characters, poor acting, and straight-up bad/lazy writing.
The tone of this season was all over the place, it's like it couldn't decide what it wanted to be. Episode 1 had me thinking that I was set for a dark and mature season of television. Compare that with the final episode - something that feels like it could be pulled straight from a teen Disney channel movie.
I will give season 2 a chance when it eventually drops, but if it's just going to be more of the same then I'm not sure I have the patience to sit through another 10 episodes of this. As I said, there were a couple of good episodes, but those are clear outliers, and it's not worth watching the other subpar episodes just to see them.
I give this season a very generous 6/10. Would probably be more like a 4.5/10, but episodes 1, 5, and 6 pull the average up.
Neil Gaiman is my Zack Snyder. Can't believe this dude's garbage is getting adapted before Brandon Sanderson's.
Not as good as the graphic novels.
Been a fan of the graphic novels since my younger days and never thought I would actually see it in live action. I do have some nitpicks but as a whole it's a well-crafted season. Hope we get more and see the story in its entirety. I'm particularly looking forward to Season of Mists (Volume 4) and Ramadan (one-shot short story).
It's a very straight adaptation of the comics! So much so that I felt like I'd been transported back to when I first read them
2/10 because the premise was interesting.
Visually very cool and way beyond what I'd expected going from a drawn comic to a real people acted drama. Story follows the actual comics very closely
The show is trying to stay as close to the books as possible, that might be a hit or miss, we will have to wait to decide. That is why it is inconsistent for many people, because the graphic novel is like that. It has some very very high points and low ones.
This is the problem with DC their shows split into two camps outstanding and utter crap. The Sandman falls into that group outstanding joining shows like of Krytron, Doom Patrol, Superman and Lois, Constantine, Titans
I dug this show, it was very different and unique compared to other comic book shows I've seen. I really enjoyed the world building and the aesthetic, and quite enjoyed Tom Sturridge. I also thought Boyd Holbrook did a great job and I think he's one of the most under-appreciated actors right now. It wasn't a perfect show though, and the overall story feels half-baked and disjointed. I don't even necessarily think this show needed a cohesive story from start to finish, and it could have thrived by just focusing on the themes, visuals, characters, and world. It did do this at times and I think that was when the show was most interesting and enjoyable. But they also tried to tell an overarching story from start to end but put it on the back burner and it feels like they forgot about it along the way. I didn't care as much about this story and was more focused on the world they were building, and overall I think the show would have been better if it chose to either fully commit to a fleshed out story or fully commit to an untraditional style without an overarching story. In the end, the unique and interesting world carries this show for me and I quite enjoyed it, even if the story felt underdeveloped.

I loved it and I'm glad that Gaiman was involved. In my opinion the the start was (First 4 episodes were so good it made the next ones hard to fiollow) a lot stronger than the finish, and I do hope it picks up next Season.
But it's very faithful to the origin source and even on the books some stories are better than others.
All in all I loved it Hope you do too.
