More action and less of the main story. But some great humor, kiddo is just great. That little moments between him and Mando are what made this episode work for me.
Absolutely gonna be in the minority here, but really goddamn loved this one. It's not perfect - it really does feel like a random, odd detour this early in the season - but in terms of more standalone episodes this is easily the best one they've done. It's a bonkers, wild ride of an episode with some genuinely fantastic humor, as morbid as it can be sometimes. Everything with The Child is fantastic here, probably his best showing in terms of both humor and personality. It's also a great showcase of the family-esqe relationship that they have been building over the course of the show, and it's heartwarming while also keeping it light in spite of the life or death scenario.
Outside of that, the effects work here is spectacular, especially the puppetry. The spider sequence at the end is also wonderfully creepy, feeling like something in line with the inside the asteroid sequence from Empire Strikes Back or even the Rathars chase from The Force Awakens. This entire episode felt like Star Wars in the best way possible, even if it was a little out there and skippable in terms of the main narrative. I loved it.
When the lady calls out Mando for not honoring his word, baby yoda looks at him like Damnnnn!
Great, well-conceived yet simple episode. It is not filler as some people have labeled it in the comments — the results are going to show up in the next episode undoubtedly. Last season there were a few episodes that were truly filler in that you could have removed them without any impact. That's not the case here. Not every episode needs to drive the main plot forward; sometimes there are detours along the way. And it's nice to see you don't need a lot of Jedi lightsaber tricks to make a great Star Wars show. Nice to see some X-Wings and the Krykna, which were the stuff of nightmares in this, excellently animated. This episode is very reminiscent of ESB, and also Alien. Fun to see the Razor Crest limping through space after all that. Baby Yoda murdering babies was a bit disturbing, but one has to remember he seems to be a little bit evil; still TBD on that…
They should really put a trigger warning for spiders in this episode...
I don't usually write reviews but after seeing all the negative ones I had to.
I absolutely loved this episode and it may be my favorite plot yet.
The thing Mandalorian is doing so well even if it still so finding it's exact footing is it's staying small scale story wise. This is not about the end of the world, or the emperor or the death star or anything. It's simple. And that's what makes it so good. Star Wars cowboy bebop is perfect.
Another thing that really works is the rpg quest type feel they are going for. Mando has something he needs, goes somewhere for it, finds a conflict, has to make a trade, fight and then completed that quest basically. So honestly for me the slower they progress the main story and the more they take the their time with each episode the better. We get to know the characters more, we get to see more star Wars that we love, and we have less time devoted to upping the stakes higher and higher until it's absurd, repetitive and no one cares. For me I guess little side missions and detours are more interesting to me because it's something I never would have seen otherwise. And even if this seems like an unpopular opinion, it's not that strange, it's commonly said the experience lies in the journey not the destination. Right now I care about what Mando is doing and I understand what drives him. There's no guarantee that when we get to the next part of the narrative that stays true.
This episode was powerful, in that it communicated a deep relationship where we could only understand Mando for most of the episode. It gave us some excitement and adrenaline while putting Mando in one of the first situations where it seemed like he was in over his head.
And don't get me started on the egg eating. Are you kidding me? Genius. Cute and scary, someone even mentioned that baby yoda has been shown to be possibly slightly dark? Yet it's hilarious at the same time. Chaotic neutral as far as I can tell.
9/10 for this episode. Don't listen to the hate.
Gotta comment after seeing so many haters complain about episodes diverting from the main arc. That’s what so amazing about a Star Wars SHOW. We get to have a little fun outside the bigger picture.
To me, these aren’t filler. These sporadic adventures-of-the-week episodes give us some breathing room to understand our characters a bit more and play around in such an epic sandbox on the small screen. The big story will continue — and we’ll appreciate it even more.
We’re oh-so-lucky to have this echelon of television in our lives. Absolutely stellar.
Harry Potter's Aragog goes to space.
Also, how delighted would you be someone eating your fetuses by the dozens, while you are sleeping. Ain't that cute?
I really liked the Razor Crest and X-wing flight scenes. I hope there will be some more (action) scenes like this.
It's also amazing how repairable the Razor Crest apparently is - it's almost too good to be true... xD
This second season has been slow and what feels like useless. Another boring unnecessary episode that exists "Just because" without really contributing anything to the SWU or even the plot of the show. The plot and writing is getting bothersome too.
-Mando is just sleeping like its his job all of a sudden for the sake of plot, lazy writing......... then when the ship crashes he just completely resigns himself? for what purpose? He was doing anything to find other Mandalorian's now all of a sudden his ship got messed up and he's done? just out of "character" and random
Frog Lady and Mr. Frog are going to be pissed when they learn that the kid has eaten several of their eggs.
The episode was probably not very logical but fun too watch. First Mandalorian is accosted by some robbers but of course beats them (though he breaks his space bike because of him), then he contacts the mechanic lady who find out where he can meet some more Mandalorians but in exchange he has to escort a frog who wants to rejoin her husband and carries her spawn in a sort of an aquarium. They cannot travel above light speed or the eggs die. What could possibly go wrong? They get noticed by the galactic police who chases Mandalorian in connection to the prison break he participated in, he manages to escape them but breaks his ship and they are stranded on the ice planet. All through the voyage the baby tries to steal the frog's eggs and manages to eat some of them, and when Mando catches him doing it, forbids him from eating the frog's babies. Later on, the frog leaves to find a warm pool for her eggs, and when they try to collect all of them, the baby attempts to eat some more, but is forbidden by Mando, so he goes and eats the contents of some eggs that were lying about, and wakes the dragon, well, not exactly, rather a large group of spiderlings and spiders, followed by the mother of the brood. It was really fun to watch the group escaping from an angry Shelob and her family, though I guess she was only protecting her young ones, just like both Mando and the frog were also doing. Though from my Tolkienist perspective it was just fun to watch Mando fight with spiders ;) In the end, the guys from the cosmic police finish off Shelob and let Mando go free as he captured the other criminals involved in the heist (the ones he left on the prison spaceship). I guess everybody blames the baby for what happened with the spiders, but I guess the little one was simply hungry and nobody (especially Mando) thought about giving him something to eat, so you cannot blame the baby for consuming some of the eggs or the spiderlings.
Tread-freaking-well! Amazing. Fun stuff!
It seems like a kind of bottle episode, but an entertaining one nevertheless. Gave me the heebie-jeebies and made me really concerned for the titular passenger.
From the best episode of the entire show so far to blatant 'monster/bounty/plot delay of the week' filler. I don't understand how an 8 episode per season show can think having filler episodes is fine. Fast forward through this and you'll miss nothing (plot setup/plot diversion/Mando overcomes diverson so Chapter 11 can continue the plotpoint like Chapter 10 didn't matter).
The Mandalorian: Chapter Ten - Goodbye, Friends of Hagrid Mando (or, the one in which Baby Yoda commits light mass child murder)
Can't believe this episode caused a backlash over the egg eating thing when those eggs aren't even human and you schmucks eat eggs every damn day lmao
One of the worst episodes. No plot. They basically used Baby Yoda to make jokes about murdering babies. You can skip this episode and won't lose much, it is a filler.
Fun fact. There’s a giant ant like alien. Which is fitting. This one is from the director of the Ant-Man movies, Peyton Reed.
Loved all the effects, nice episode!
[7.6/10] This one felt a little slower and less engaging than some other episode of The Mandalorian, but it still tells a good story with some cool visuals and interesting dynamics.
The first thing that stands out to me is that this is, ultimately, a story of parents. Mando has become, more and more, Baby Yoda’s dad, chastising him for getting into things he shouldn’t, trying to get him to come over to the ship and “give me a hand,” in the exact way a parent would. Likewise, the Frog Woman is trying to protect her young (or at least her unfertilized eggs that can become her young). The scene where the three of them hunker down, with The Child cuddled up against Mando, and the Frog Woman cradling her container of eggs, draws the parallel nicely.
But it even extends to the ice cave spiders, who don’t really start attacking until Baby Yoda chows down on one of the big spider’s young. If I were to dig deep, I’d suggest the overarching theme of this one is the lengths that parents will go to protect their children, across species and across the galaxy.
Here’s the other interesting thing about the episode though -- we get to see X-Wing pilots as cops. It’s a fun dynamic, having Mando ask them “if there’s a problem” and only engage his beacon when threatened with being pulled over (or its space equivalent). We get the intergalactic equivalent of high speed car chase with the cops, and it’s unique to see X-Wing pilots as antagonists, which I like.
That’s enhanced by the ending, where they save the day because they recognize the good Mando’s done even if he technically ought to be arrested. The sense that these are “trying times” -- filled with uncertainty after the fall of the Empire, to where any folks doing good out there, even as free agents, are lauded -- helps with the world-building of this era in Star Wars history.
The actual set pieces are all cool, if not quite as stand out as some others. The chase through the clouds is pretty standard stuff for Star Wars, but still well done. The fight with the dozens, if not hundreds of spider creatures was tense and creepy, and the design work on the big spider in particular was superbly creepy. But the best one of them all may have been the opening skirmish with a group of bounty hunters, featuring some good fight choreography and a clever escape via tricking one of this attackers with his jetpack.
The smaller scale interactions are good too. I like that there’s a communications gap between Mando and the Frog Woman. There’s something very lived in about them having to convey important things to one another but Mando not being able to understand her. I like the cleverness of the Frog Woman figuring out how to reprogram the assassin droid to bridge that gap, but I also like how there’s something elemental about protecting helpless offspring, be they egg or adopted Yoda creatures, that connects them.
I also know that some people were upset by Baby Yoda eating a few of the eggs to which I say -- lighten up. I have to admit, the sheer animation of this adorable little thing sucking up those little eggs made me chuckle. The Child doesn't know any better; Mando chastised him each time, and the Frog Woman still had plenty left so that she could continue her line. I get people being a little weirded out by the melding of “This is a serious and personal mission to save this person’s family” and “Haha, green baby eat thing!” but that’s part and parcel with the tone of Star Wars, and while I can totally see poking fun at the asymmetry of it, I cannot imagine actually having a problem with it.
Overall, this is one isn’t quite the roaring success that the season premiere was, but it’s still a nice stop along the way, with some great design work for the spider monster and the Frog Woman, an interesting parenthood-focused theme, and a glimpse at what life in the New Republic is like for bounty hunters and scofflaws.
for a second I thought: facehuggers coming to your Star Wars universe .....
I recommend not to eat while watching :sweat_smile:
This show is just epic!
Last week was Tremors. This week was Arachnophobia. Next week... Gremlins 2: The New Batch?
This one has its moments, but it's way too much filler, especially for the second episode of the season. And after two critter-of-the-week outings to kick things off, I'm really hoping that we start to get an arc next week...
An interesting continuation from last week's episode. The cinematography and the visual effects for this episode were great. It's amazing how entertaining this show is with a limited cast and the perfect balance between story and action. As always, Baby Yoda continues to steal the spotlight, even though it's eating eggs it's not supposed to.
First episode of the season started off so strong and I was a bit disappointed with this one. Hopefully this is a setup for bigger things to come, but...meh.
why would he eat those eggs :sob::sob::sob:
"I'm sorry, lady. I don't understand Frog."
That spider chase made me think of Harry Potter.
Very disliked Dave Filoni's appearance. Do not want to see him in any acting roles. They have to always cast professional actors and completely forget to use their families, nieces, etc for acting roles. These are not your personal home videos. It completely takes you out of the story.
This episode is so bad. The poorest so far. Only 8 episodes and the second one is a filler.
This is a throwaway episode but still, I like it very much.
A big nothing of an episode. An expensive Alien rip off.
From probably one of the best episodes to one of the worst... I’ll say this once and never again. STOP GIVING WORK TO PEYTON REED! His Ant man movies are incredibly passable but they’re nothing to ride home about, but when you attach him to a show where the interesting directors that gave you some of the best MCU films like Thor love and thunder, and iron man. His work looks mediocre in comparison. This episode was poorly paced and boring in comparison, last week I was surprised how it was a 49 minute episode to watching this wishing the episodes were 25 minutes again. This episode was too convenient for my taste; from last episode opening on Mando finally finding the location of where Mandalorian are, after what seemed like a decent amount of time passing to him stumbling on another creature just handing him the answer to more Mandalorians location, to this constant return to this flat out unfunny joke... Maybe it just my parenting philosophy, but I would be doing far more the saying no a third time if my child was eating the only spawn left of an old women... like seriously... the child is 60 years old! Sure its a baby, but it’s not a dog... it has a mind capable of growing and yet you’re not holding it accountable? Ugh just annoyed me... other then that I liked the movement of the frog women, liked the creepy spider scene. And Amy Sedaris character is very entertaining.
Other then that it was a boring filler episode that felt like it dragged on, and for a show with only 8 episodes; that seems worrisome. The characters didn’t even feel like they grew in any way... the child was still eating eggs by the end, when he was the one at fault for causing the spiders to attack, and mando still seemed annoyed he had to taxi the frog women. Boring
8/10
Great episode
and was so much fun,
I really enjoyed this more
than the last episode,
I had a really great time.
Highlight was Baby G
locked on to those eggs
for the entire episode,
absolutely hilarious,
I could watch Baby G
swallow those eggs all day.
What a treat to have the
Mechanic lady in both
episodes I hope this
continues and we see
more of her this season.
The problem of knowing too much. Din could’ve asked the rebel patrols about the Jedi, and gotten a little information that would at least give him a key for getting the Child to a safe place. But he doesn’t see our flyboys in orange as friendly. And then we wouldn’t have a show.
I feel so deeply for the Frog Lady! Dignity and class exude from her.
Baby Yoda - absolute egg eating savage.
Not grogu eating the last of a species like it’s nothing
What the hell happened. I was browsing the internet. Seemed to be a crap episode.
Yeah I mean this is fun but where is this going...?
Lmao best episode. Amazing. Bravo
I know this show is episodic, but the episodes need to make some contributions to the overall plot, Favreau, especially when there are only eight of them! The episode is boring, but nice to look at. The scene with the fucking microphone hooked up to the droid carcass took me right out of it. Felt like I was watching a post-colonial church service. Frog lady effects were very good, but that just makes me feel like how much of a waste it was for such an uninteresting 1/2 character/plot device.
Stop revisiting the mechanic lady. Lying PoS qUiRkY characters are not interesting, and then being opportunistic and dishonest is not funny. Maybe it was just a casualty of the Corona schedule and they just tapped who was available. Still, she's a shit character and so was everyone else besides Mando.
Maybe we'll get some actual story next time.
Ps. More KotOR lore! Looks like shryaks in the cave. Ice shryaks? Nothing interesting about them, though, which just shows another lost opportunity when there could have been the hint of a trail of a Jedi given the nature of shryak caves. I certainly don't want to come back here, though. Mando's already made too many repeat visits to wherever the heck the first landing was.
not my favorite episode by any means Still pretty good
this episode is more of a breather giving us some nice little character moments most of the episodes is inside the ship
This show has made me addicted, every episode I watched I felt I needed more and more... It's just that the episodes are short and it's like finishing and getting the feeling of NOW!This serie
How the hell does Dee Bradley Baker voice all of these creatures?

Already gonna be a better season if the big picture plan here is to have one giant monster per episode.

The Good:
The Mandalorian has been consistently good with fleshing out the Star Wars universe by giving us scenes with people talking business, relationships and other very mundane topics and Chapter 10 is no different. It's these small scenes that make the world seem real, such as the "traffic police" scene in space, which would feel out of place in any other Star Wars related production.
Baby Yoda was shamelessly side-lined in the previous episode, so it's great to see him/her/it back in action, more adorable than ever. It's also intriguing to see Mando turn more and more into a father for the baby.
The Western vibe is strong this season. Mando's little side mission goes awry and leaves him stranded in the wilderness with a baby and a foreign frog. The way he has to find his way out of the pickle under his dire circumstances is a beautiful call-back to Western films of the past.
It's refreshing to see a mostly barren and empty landscape as the main setting since it shows that the vast galaxy also contains uninhabited spaces.
That giant snow spider is a pretty effective monster and one of the better threats this series has featured so far. That second half of the episode is brilliantly directed and shot.
The Bad:
I kind of miss the majestic score from the previous episode. This one is pretty empty on music for the most part and the melodies that do appear aren’t very interesting.
Two episodes in a row featuring giant monsters and plots mostly irrelevant to the main storyline. It's almost as if the writers were deliberately trying to milk the cow and stall the progression of the story for as long as possible before actually turning their attention to the main goal of the season.
Despite a breathtaking second half, the first half of the episode is the quietest and slowest yet in this series; it's also mostly devoid of any actual important story content.
By the end of the episode, not much has progressed or changed, and while the viewer feels sufficiently satisfied by the further fleshing out of the SW universe, they also feel increasingly impatient about moving away from what is shaping up to become a prolonged introduction to the season.
The Ugly:
"Sorry lady, I don't understand frog!"

I've never been this worried for a lady frog from outta space.
