Wow, I've never played the games but this premiere was so good. Exhilarating, heartbreaking, interesting, just checks all of the boxes. You can tell that the characters are going to be complex and the dynamics between them even more so. I'm not sure how accurate to the game these character portrayals are, but I'm hearing a lot of fans of the game praise this premiere so I am guessing they are pretty spot on. I was immediately drawn to the performances from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. In a world where video game adaptations have a bad reputation, this show already feels like it can change that. As far as what a TV premiere is supposed to do, this one absolutely nailed it. Early candidate for one of my favorite shows of the year if this is the quality we're going to get for 9 weeks. Immediately hooked, bring on the rest.
A lot of my concerns have been put to rest and I can make peace with a few of the details... Still not sure about Bella but a decent job this ep at least. A really strong opener, looking forward to how it all plays out this season.
It has the right 'feel' so far as well.
Full disclosure: I have never played through The Last of Us, but I have a general knowledge of the plot and world of both games. That being said, I thought this was a very good start. The pre apocalypse stuff was good, although maybe a little too long, and everything after the outbreak was pretty incredible. Really love the production design, you can tell this had a massive budget and a really talented team behind it. I was initially very skeptical of Pedro Pascal in the role of Joel Miller, but he did a very good job in this episode. Still not really loving Ellie's actress, but I have the feeling she'll grow on me.
Overall, very happy with this as a first episode, hoping the rest of the season will be at least this good.
I haven't played the games but I gotta say I REALLY enjoyed the intro in the 1960s as a way of introducing the concept. Perfectly terrifying and in a unique way.
the car scene, the first night of the apocalypse, was better than ever i imagine, that was amazing. this series has everything to go down in history
It’s so great to see my Fringe queen, Anna Torv, on this show. Love her.
Super strong start here. Tons of promise. I wish more of that edge-of-your-seat energy continued a liiiiiiittle more throughout the episode. The tension dropped off significantly after the time jump, but… we inevitably need to learn some stuff and character dive, so all is forgiven.
Excited to see what’s to come!
they captured the same emotion out of me for that Sarah scene and I'm grateful for it!!! they tweaked things here and there for the sake of cutting off some of the over-actiony sequences from the game but most of it was very well done, the whole episode was a nostalgia ride in a new upgraded form for me and I loved every minute of it
hope this season keeps this same energy
Quite possibly a perfect pilot. I’m calling it here and now, by the end of the year this show will be regarded as one of the greatest shows in years. Many Emmys are undoubtedly on the way.
My heart is broken and I'm in pain. Again. But the HBO adaptation is so beautifully done. It's like the game, but bigger. It's also slower, which allows sinking into this world. I know this world, this story well too much, and yet it hits hard every, fucking, time when I play the game and now, when I watch the show.
And I love it. I love it so much that it hurts.
I know it's just one episode, the first one, but I hope that HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us will keep this to the end of the season. Or even gets better.
It is finally here. Started with me smiling like an idiot in disbelief, then dreading that opening moment, to finally being in awe of how they're actually fucking nailing it. Yeah, we're in for a masterpiece.
The real horror of this show isn't the infected, but the fact that they won't even let a child have unclear skin so they poorly smooth it out in post-production like an insecure Instagram influencer.
I am biased as fuck because The Last of Us is my #1 favorite game and it has a special place in my heart. This episode was AMAZING and I loved everything about it. I am so happy this is being adapted so well and excited to see what the next episodes bring.
God Damn , it was so good . Gave me serious early walking dead vibes , instant goosebumps.
Brilliant first episode. It's my favorite game of all time so I was a bit skeptical going into this, but I am pleasantly suprised. Great performances all around (only not entirely sold on the Tess character yet).
9/10
Can't get too much better than what was dang near a perfect adaptation for the first episode, INMO. It was a huge bonus for Pascal to be cast in the tv adaptation, but I still was dreading what was going to happen to such a beautifully made game when placed into the hands of Hollywood. Everyone involved in the adaptation of LOU did phenomenally well and I don't believe any fan of the game (we won't talk about LOU 2) would be disappointed by such a great start into the introduction of this post-apocalyptic world our characters get thrown into. Well done! Hope the rest of the episodes can follow suit.
Great start into the show, as a huge fan of the game I feel like we're in really safe hands here! All the performances were fantastic, the first half of this episode is incredible and I'm excited to see where it goes (as the show seems to by adding in some small things here and there too from the game which is a pleasant surprise)
A solid pilot. Let’s see how the rest goes. Hoping it’s as solid.
Finally a video game adaptation that lived up to expectations. Following the original story very closely, having the same composer for the soundtrack, minimalistic but very interesting details like Joel's watch and his favorite DVDs and music genre. Bella Ramsey really lives up to the Ellie character, I was almost sure she wouldn't be able to but she proved me so wrong. The directing and writing of the episode was also beautiful.
I dare say one of the best starts to a TV show ever! Masterfully and beautifully done, really impressive what they've pulled off with this. It was definitely able to make me feel different emotions at the right times. I feel like I just want more right now.
Loved the whole intro!
Joel awesome!
Ellie does the job! So far so good… so excited for the rest of the series
As a lover of the games, this is a MASTERPIECE, the visuals are amazing, the actors are amazing (A fine choice for me).
I can live the amazing moments that the games give me all over again.
Did I talk about the visual? Damn
If follows the story game but don't expect to be exactly, try to be open minded and you ill enjoy for sure.
What is your thoughts about the very fist episode?
Phenomenal stuff. They have captured the essence of the game so perfectly, and rather than changing lots of things for this new medium - which is where most other adaptations mess up - they have changed very little, but rather they have expanded on various points to bring whole new layers of depth to this world. The performances given by the entire cast are fantastic, the sets and costumes are spot on, and it's shot beautifully in a way that perfectly captures the depressing and tense nature of this world.
The Last of Us has always been a masterpiece of gaming; it's a story that was always well-suited for television, and if the show continues to remain at this level moving forwards, The Last of Us should not just be remembered as an example of masterful storytelling in gaming, but as a masterpiece of storytelling full stop. 9.5/10
It’s wild that Sarah is even wearing the same exact clothes that she did in the game. The attention to detail is insane so far.
I also love how they used the actual voice actor to play the roll of a Marlene
This was genuinely way fucking better than I expected. Almost a damn near perfect adaptation of the game's opening act - one which adds depth where I didn't even know it was needed. I have a few complaints (like Sarah not having a Southern accent for some reason), but the fact that was the first thing that came to my mind should say how little I really have to complain about.
Stellar first episode. Genuinely can't wait for more.
Went in very reserved, knowing how most adaptations of my favourite franchises turn out, but this is certainly an exception. Very well done from top to bottom, great introduction to the world of The Last of Us and the characters we'll now follow on this journey. Can't wait to see the pivotal moments in the coming episodes. What a great start to this phenomenal story.
Game is 10/10 for me, this adaptation is 7 for me, not as hyped as others. Will see where it goes.
All the stuff before the message ‘23 years later’ was top notch. So grim, dark and great cinematography. And that granny neighbor was scary as hell.
HBO :handshake: casting a great young actress only to write her off almost immediately in a show featuring multiple time jumps
Can't talk about the videogame since I don't know it, but this is how you introduce the audience to a world: you take your time and allow viewers to feel with the characters, so that we empathize and get a connection - before the story gets going. And the fact that they took the first 35 mins for that specifically, and the other 40 for that same purpose in the new Earth, is a testament to that.
And that's a thing most series seem not to get: they feel the need to hook the viewer within the first 15 mins or else... who knows what.
With the result that the main advantage of the serial medium over the cinematic one - extended time - gets often lost in the attempt to stick to what we knew 30 years ago about television, instead of focusing on the storytelling possibilities 45mins-1h x 10 eps allow.
I love when showrunners understand this, hope they keep with the strong start.
-The first episode was straightforward, didn't feel like filler at all, it actually felt like it filled in the blanks with the first game
The acting especially with Sara, Joel and Ellie, these characters made it feel like I was at home with the last of us games
The classic game quotes were spot on perfect, it was like I was watching the cut scenes of the game
The cinematography was amazing, spot on, the level of detail in all aspects was perfect.
This episode felt like a movie, that's leading us into it's sequel
This is a solid 10/10 The acting was a solid 10/10
Can't wait for episode 2
I have played some of the game. Maybe until episode two I reckon. I thought this first episode was a bit boring until like the last 10 minutes. I think the rest of the series will be much better though.
It was OK. There's a same-y feeling with all these post-apocalyptic zombie TV shows and movies (the opening chaos reminded me of A Quiet Place 2). So the characters will make this show.
It's really hard for me to evaluate the episode, I've read some rave reviews but I'm not sure what to think of it. I have never played the game it is based on and I only heard about it when the show was about to air. The setting is meticulously designed and it looks like Pedro Pascal is great in his role, the scene when Joel's daughter is killed is quite moving (though from what I've heard about it in the reviews, I expected more about Sara). The parts with people being turned into zombies and devouring each other is quite scary, and I really liked the intro, playing on the theme of spores and fungi (though it does look a bit like GoT and HotD intros with things growing out of the ground and forming into shapes which mean something in the context of a given show). The showrunners don't do any infodumping which is a plus to some extent but on the other hand you have to deduce the rules the world of the protagonists operates on, which is a bit challenging for people unfamiliar with the game. I am not sure what to think of the show, it would be untrue to say I didn't like it, but on the whole, the world the characters live in is pretty depressing.
I really really REALLY wish the show doesn't steer into The Walking Dead direction. All I want is creatures and intense edge of the seat scares.
First half of episode one reminded me of the movie Greenland. I loved it. If I could rate that half alone I'd give it a 10/10.
The premiere episode of “The Last Of Us,” titled “When You’re Lost in the Darkness,” was nothing short of a tour de force. It exceeded my high expectations and then some, solidifying its place as one of the most promising shows of the year.
As far as video-game adaptations go, “The Last Of Us” hits every nail on the head. Throughout its feature-length runtime, the episode remained riveting and kept you glued to the screen.
A masterclass in storytelling, and every element, from the writing to the direction to the acting—everything—was excellent.
The character development in this show puts almost every other series out there to shame. In just the first episode, you feel a genuine emotional connection to the characters, and their struggles feel all too real. It’s a testament to how great writing can be when executed properly.
The world-building and VFX work is stunning and does the video game justice. The post-apocalyptic setting is haunting yet beautiful, with remarkable attention to detail. The cast all fit in perfectly, and even those I was unsure about, like Bella Ramsey, didn’t disappoint.
To conclude, the premiere episode of “The Last Of Us” is a work of art, and I can’t give enough praise to everyone involved in its creation. Everything is top-notch, from the writing to the direction to the performances, setting a high bar for the rest of the series. A must-watch for both fans of the game and newcomers alike, a true audiovisual feast for the senses!
01x01 - When You're Lost in the Darkness: 8.6/10 (Great)
Wow!
Bella Ramsey was the perfect choice for Ellie. Nico Parker was incredible! She's definitely her mother's daughter. Anna Torv was great too. Pedro Pascal... oh god. He's not only a awesome actor, he's charismatic and hot. What a man.
I liked this first episode so much! I definitely will keep watching. I recommend this a lot.
(730-word review) While this was certainly nowhere near as much of a masterpiece, unrivaled by most premieres, comparable to the greatest ones, as the majority seem to think, it was decent enough. The first half (up to the time skip) was better than the following half, which pretty much only had the ending going for it; the big moment before the time skip was impactful in a logical sense, but I wasn't emotionally swayed by it like with most people.
It's been a while since I last absorbed the game: and my memory of everything is clouded, but most of this premiere was almost a carbon copy of its counterpart/source material, especially leading up to the 20-year time skip. Some stuff after that was new or done differently. That could've contributed to my finding it decent instead of a masterpiece; you know, the fact that I already "experienced" it.
But I think stamping this premiere, and even this show as a whole despite only one episode (which so many have already done) with the labels: 'masterpiece,' 'phenomenal,' 'fantastic,' 'incredible,' 'outstanding,' and so on, is a somewhat significant overstatement. And that will likely incite massive disagreement towards me/that opinion of mine.
The opening scene reminded me of Craig Ferguson and Timothy Dalton because Dr. Neuman (John Hannah) sounded like the former, and Dr. Schoenheiss (Christopher Heyerdahl) sounded like the latter; a pretty irrelevant thing to mention, but I went for it.
The title sequence was good, and the theme song by Gustavo Santaolalla is always lovely to hear; equally immersive and invigorating: if it were to play every second of every episode, I would love that. There wouldn't need to be other score cues. It's so good.
The cinematography didn't stand out as much as I was expecting, given the majority's praise, akin to Jesus Christ himself returning, but it wasn't bad; the long scene inside the truck was the highlight. The most noticeable thing I noticed in that same vein was the production value, and luckily, the show's budget has been well-spent.
I didn't have any particular misgivings about the casting of Pedro Pascal and Gabriel Luna as Joel and Tommy; however, part of me felt better actors (generally, not concerning their acting) would've fit better. I'm pleased to say that I'm already on board with Pedro and Gabriel, especially the latter, for some reason: even though I should feel that way more about Pedro.
But (there's always a 'but') I'm still on the fence concerning Bella Ramsey and Anna Torv. Bella seems on the right track regarding Ellie's attitude, but something about how she plays her doesn't scream 'Ellie.' She also doesn't look the part, especially facial expression-wise, and her American accent/voice could be better, which somewhat, and I mean this in the kindest way possible, throws the performance off. And Anna doesn't seem to have a presence behind her performance, and that may or may not "be necessary" for Tess, but I don't remember; either way, she felt lacking and not at all Tess.
As far as the acting/performance(s) side of things is concerned, Nico Parker was the standout, and it wasn't that close. You can sum up her performance in one word: natural. Her chemistry with Pedro was palpable, which can't be seen yet with Ellie and Joel, although I hope it'll get there; it needs to. She should've lowkey been Ellie; it's a joke, everyone! I'm joking! Or am I?
Overall, being a new medium, this premiere was familiar, at least for me, resulting in a much lesser impact, as far as I'm concerned, than it seemed to have on most people. I feel that, by the end, it'll be the weakest or one of the weaker episodes. But I think that's a good thing for the people who are going into this blind, not having played or watched through the game, as everything it faithfully covered from the game makes for a compelling introduction to the show and what's to come.
Since most people already feel like this premiere was the pinnacle of television, they'll undoubtedly feel more strongly about the following episodes. I'm just hoping they'll be more appropriately up my alley and more compelling than I found this premiere, which wasn't bad at all.
If you've read this far, I'm surprised; if you've skipped to the end, I don't blame you.
Fantastic! Does the game justice in every possible way. Can't wait to watch the rest!
I think this the first time I have ever rated the first episode of a tv show a 10!!!
High expectations satisfied so far. Have to get used to Ellie but the rest of the cast is like a copy of the game! Tess is done really well in my opinion. The story is not exactly like the game but that's ok! The dead infected in the tunnels looked amazing and so did all the infected so far! Can't wait for the fist clicker to appear Can't wait for the next episode.
Fan-fucking-tastic wow. I've never played the game but I have heard how good it is. It's a relief that so far this doesn't seem to be subject to the curse of video game adaptations. When the source material is amazing though, it's a bit easier I suppose. But still a massive challenge to adapt a video game.
I didn’t have the pleasure to play the game, I watched some gameplays though. But this first episode is juts PERFECTION. Great cast! Absolutely love it! Can’t wait to see how it all develops. :eyes::star_struck:
Wasn’t sure after watching the trailer but the first episode has me hooked for the next one. Excellent filming and perfect music had me genuinely riveted on them fleeing their home.
A great start with a more impactful and intense portrayal of emotional and horrific moments compared to the game IMO.
Pedro does a pretty good job being Joel but, I'm a bit skeptical about Bella playing Ellie though, my fingers are crossed for the episodes to come. Can't wait!
First 17 minutes are visceral and amazingly bittersweet. The writers making you so attached to a character in under 20 minutes that I nearly cried losing is unmatched.
The entire episode was just perfect.
I can already tell this is one's gonna be a masterpiece
One of the best first episodes of a TV show ever
The Last of Us starts off strong with its first episode remaining faithful to the original game and what made it so special. From the visuals to the music and the dialogue, fans everywhere are grateful this adaptation has been handled with such delicate care.
And now what? I have to wait another whole week????
The opening credits remind me of House of the Dragon and Rings of Power
Important actors not listed here: Nick Offerman (as Bill!!), Ashley Johnson (original Ellie!), and Melanie Lynskey (2&1/2 men!!)!!!
Not as good as the games opening hours. But still HBO top tier quality.
Started off fine but then the exposition became really annoying and the long runtime started to become an issue. I have no idea why they tried to keep Ellie’s secret hidden, just made me irritated.
Love post apocalyptic stories that show the slightly before everything went to sh*t... and this was done expertly. Can't wait to see how the season proceeds.
I feel so bad about how internet trolls treated the actrice playing Ellie. If they’re as positive about this first episode as I am, I hope they think about their actions once again.
A really good way to Kickstart a show... Showed enough to peak interest but not enough to kill curiosity.
Solid start. :)
great first episode, great storytelling, great world building
Great intro and seems to be a good start to the series. Although I haven't seen the game this series evolved from I'm looking forward to following the story to the end.
Incredible series premiere. The 2003 storyline was so true to the video game it almost felt like playing the game again. Overall incredibly well done adaption. Can‘t wait to see the rest of the first season.
Fun Fact:
The movie Sarah puts

episodes are really fucking long
Loving the show! Great tension, good story, awesome cast!! Already can’t wait for next season!
There are so many similarities with the game. It’s very well put together. Loving every second of it. Keep it up!
That was some compelling tv. I was boohooing and griped. I'm not normally a zombie gal but this one has me hooked. also, I was just suddenly reminded that I watched a playthrough of the beginning of tlou like 6 years ago. all the car scenes right after the outbreak are shot exactly like how video games are. it was weirdly eerie.
Boring and not memorable. Adds nothing new to the genre.
Really great start to the show. I loved the game, but admittedly stopped playing. This makes me want to pick it up again!
first 20 minutes got my heart pumping and eyes wet. rest was okay. looks like second ones gonna kick some serious asss.
First 20 minutes and I love the nostalgia. Backpack like back then, the cellphone, DVD, oven with the analogue clock, the Bush picture in the classroom... I even wondered, if they had used old footage for the bus drive, The scenery, whatever
Liked pretty much this intro, but I don’t find it particularly original for this kind of show… let’s see how it evolves. Great quality overall though.
Amazing start. Love it. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
I like that it doesn't stray from the original story, but at the same time I don't;
I like it for people who haven't played the game, and don't in general, cause it introduces them to the universe.
But for gamers like myself who's played or watched it multiple times, it's a bit boring...
Hopefully, they will implement some new exciting plot points in this series and not just recreate the game in series-form, because then there's not really any point in watching it.
Typical zombie apocalypse, with a great cinematography. As usual the girl just pissed me off on how stupid she was in the beginning. Not very realistic on human behavior in these situations, but then again in every horror movie they act the same. Overall superb episode.
It’s still working my way through the first episode. After having some worries on some characters, I can safely say, Nico Parker knocked it out the park! Definitely had tears. Great mood, expressions and heart. This is my first time witnessing Gabriel Luna’s acting and instantly became a fan. Pedro and Gabriel nailed the voices and characters.
i wasn't really feeling that 2000s stuff but when they got into that car... let's see where it goes, pedro pascal..
The opening scene was the best thing of the entire episode, amazing.
Well, that was boring. I'm kinda glad I didn't play the games.
What a great beggining to the show. They have done an incredibly job in every aspect of the game.Everything seems to be so close to the best game ever that we couldn't ask for more.Perdo Pascal was the best choice for sure and Bella Ramsey is looking also promising for the rest of the show. Can't wait!
I was reticent to watch this since I didn't think there was any way it could improve on what the game did. After seeing the first episode I have to say that I think they're nailing it so far though.
All of the characters feel like they should. The atmosphere of the environments is faithful. One thing I would say is that there were a couple of times when they used music that wasn't in the game and it felt out of place. Other than that I think this has potential.
I can already see The Last Of Us as the next HBO series people will be waiting for.
We can split this 1st episode into two parts:
Act 1 (The Buildup)
For watchers unfamiliar with the game, they would usually expect this as another zombie movie with a predictable plot. With the amount of zombie or 'infection' movies released, people can be a little tired of the genre, but The Last of Us gives us a new approach to it by introducing fungi as the primary catalyst of the pandemic. The early sequence gives us a suspenseful feeling of uncertainty for what's to come. It really gives us a good buildup of what's about to happen to Sarah with the news radio, the watch shop closing early, and that old neighbor twitching.
Chaos breaks and we're brought into this car sequence that's very similar to the game. We're taken into the backseat, watching as everything unfolds before our eyes, except this time, instead of a car hitting us, the writers decided to make it a plane crashing in the field (which I think was a pretty nice touch). Sarah sprains her ankle and Joel is forced to carry her as they escape and get chased until a soldier finds them. Sarah dies... time skip.
Act 2 (Worldbuilding)
Episode 1 did a really good job with showing us how the world was after 20 years, and introducing to us the not-so-infected infected. It does a really great job of introducing who the main characters has come to be and what would be the driving plot of the show onwards. It leaves a great deal of the unknown outside the wall and at the same time, shows what it's like to be inside them.
Ending shot was just epic. I can't wait to see the next episode.
EDIT: Can I just say... that intro was so Game of Thrones.
I saw Ellie played by Bella Ramsey, and Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller. Perfect casting choices even Tess and the Marlene actresses were also great in their roles.
Very good first episode. I like everything and most castings. The only thing I felt was a bit out of place is the actress for Ellie. I recognize her from game of thrones for which she did a very awesome job but here she does not feel and look like Ellie.
I don’t want to give spoilers but just like the other people have said, this is the best thing I’ve seen since game of thrones. They’ve done research on the game and they’ve actually included one of the participants of the game to help develop this absolutely stunning masterpiece.
I watch it slowly as I don’t want it to end. They can build further on this series for sure and they can definitely make a season 2, based on the second game.
I just want more of this I never want it to end. This is one of those weird I would totally own on DVD in 4k.
have to say that although I wasn't too pushed on the trailer this was a really good opening episode.
Why did the daughter have to die right off the bat? Probably so Joel becomes a hard A$$. Great Show though.
I haven’t played the game, but did watch the game intro recently to get an idea of the show, but it’s hard to figure out everything without context from the game. I liked it a lot- the title sequence was cool, reminding me of GOT, Pedro Pascal was great as always, and i’m excited for more.
Let’s start a new journey hope to be along one:pray_tone1::pray_tone1:
If I’m a fan of the game, I think I would leave 9 stars. But, no matter what, 8 stars is good enough already. Expecting the next episode.
Episode 1x01 with tittle in Spanish "Cuando te pierdas en la oscuridad" no "Cuando te pierdes en la oscuridad", by original web from HBO
As a game fan I'm hopeful of this show
Amazing. This what television can be. Fantastic.
I'm sure that car chase scene is straight of the gameplay! Really love the pilot! Can get better with pacing but I'm really excited for this one!
Omg. I’m so excited :thumbsup_tone1::grinning::wink:
And that's how you do it. So true to the source material and it pays off. The changes they do make stick the landing just fine.
So good !
I love all the intro even if little bit different than the video game ( for understandable reasons)
oh boy this gonna be so good!!!, it's my favorite game and now I'm seeing it on series!!!,
really liked the first episode and it's makes u feel like u are playing the game again for first time
soooo excited for the rest of episodes
this was so good that you don't even want to finish the episode!
Amazing premiere, if it keeps this same energy HBO will have another masterpiece on their hands!
By Golly. Colour me impressed!

Wow wow wow what a first episode this is how TV shows should be made...
