The Handmaid's Tale

Season 4

What a poor season this is. Not many new things / pour action and long dramatic scenes. Only episode 10 was okay. Don’t look forward to the next season!!

Performances were on point (as usual), but this season really lacks in the writing department compared to previous seasons. It's not bad TV by any means, it's still quite good, but I think it's easily the worst season of the show. It feels as though the writers were more concerned with making June out to be a badass than they were with anything else. The finale left me feeling disappointed, and I felt that many of the characters did not receive a satisfactory or even definitive ending. If you've watched the first three seasons, then it's definitely worth the watch, but it's clear that the show was beginning to overstay its welcome, although I'd have probably said that back after season 2.

EDIT: Turns out I was misinformed. The show is set for a fifth season! I have mixed feelings about this news, however, as I feel as though the show has gone on long enough (perhaps even too long) already. But at the same time, it makes me feel better about the season 4 finale, since I now know that other plots and character arcs will continue on and hopefully be resolved at a later date.

This show continues to decline in terms of story. It feels like it needs wrapping up but seems like there’s plans to drag it out longer. I was just not interested or engaged with this season and went through the motions.
Nowhere near the heights of first season.

In regards to the Handmaid's Tale, Season 4 would be the lowest-rated in relation to the first 3 seasons. It's still an 8/10, which means that it's an exciting show that I still enjoy. It retains remarkable performances, with Elisabeth Moss being lovely as usual. I concur that writing may not have been the strongest, but with this season's setting, it's well-done to a degree. I was expecting a bit more, but with the open-ended finale, there's a lot to speculate and be excited for. I implore everyone to read the Hollywood Reporter interviews of the cast regarding Season 4, since there's interesting insight that helps to explain the mindset that drives the writing and direction of Season 4. Again, I am interested to see how June's story progresses in Season 5.

June’s selfishness really reached new heights this season. Bored of her character, bored of the close ups, bored of everyone bending to her will. They have some serious redeeming to do in S5.
