[6.7/10] This season was important to the history of the show because it was the first to drastically change its format.
The men vs. women format was actually a unique idea at the time because it got away from the traditional The Real World vs. Road Rules backdrop and allowed for intermingling between the 2 shows on the same team.
While the men dominated most of the dailies as the season went on, there was a time when the women were outsmarting the men. One thing the men did do a better job at, however, was deciding who to vote off their team each episode.
The men decided early on that it would be best to vote off the man who had the lowest points and taking emotion out of the equation. There was a point system (I miss that) that would decipher who was doing the best at the challenges. The top 3 would form the Inner Circle and would decide who went home.
There was literally an argument every week on the women’s team about who went home. One woman may have had a personal issue with another woman outside the show or on another season which would lead to strong women being voted out over weaker ones. This was a huge reason why the men were able to trounce them.
A lot of first’s happened: First extreme sports host (Jonny Moseley), first lifesaver (this created interesting situations), first wedding, and first casting special.
There’s some stuff that went down on this season that would not fly today. When Puck (a White man) spit in David E’s (a Black man) face, most of the house backed Puck. It’s the only time in the show’s history when Jonathan Murray (co-creator of The Real World, Road Rules, The Challenge, and Bad Girls Club) appeared on camera. Puck was a production pet and the producers really did not want him to go home.
Do you ever wonder why players destroy their puzzles after solving them? Thank the men from Sexes.
During the final, the women solved their puzzle first when they got to that stage. The men, smartly, copied their puzzle after the women left. The women complained at the reunion that it was cheating, but Mark Long pointed out that the men still beat the women with over a hour to spare.
