Whatever! I loved it and need a second season asap.
whole show was entertaining beginning to end. enjoyed the fight scenes, the pop in humor for consistent laugh taking the serious out in random moments. Was good acting and likeable characters. Loved it for the entertainment and how there's no pushed drama, I'm not a wanna be critic trying to break down a good series, was just a good mix of humor and action!
The episodes should be 30 mins each. There is too much filler garbage in each episode. A lot of time waste.
Amazing work. Very enjoyable to watch. The sound tract was definitely hot as well. Will definitely be looking for season 2.
The Brothers Sun - :heart:x8
This is a great show. A lot of unexpected fun & humor. Even thoughy this is a show about the Triad and all of their misdeeds - it is also quite a heart-warming, getting-to-know-you family story. A second season will be most welcome.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
10% Kill Bill, 90% Surf Ninjas. The criminals are all idiots. The arms dealers don't use guns. The cops are all beyond idiots. The romance is trite and most of the "twists" are either immediately predictable or completely implausible. Worst of all, the character of Bruce is cartoonish doofus, and not at all in a charming or likable way.
I really liked this show and would love to see a second season.
The amount of family drama that happens in this show is so fun to watch. Really good show.
Started off strong, but def didn’t stick the landing. The fight scene choreography was def the best part. I really wish they would have started the show from Bruce’s perspective instead of Charles” and we as the audience slowly got dragged into the triad gang life with him. I def don’t see Netflix renewing this for a second season.
Amazing cinematography! I enjoyed the soundtrack a LOT too, and the choreos were sharp as a knife in the fighting scenes of Charles, especially. Female actors were all beyond good too. Story might not be the best ever told, but it has a vibe of quality to it you can consistently feel throughout the series. Recommend for cinema lovers imo <3.
it's a fairly decent series and a fun watch...if you can get passed the 'Bruce' character's idiotic and ridiculous buffoonery :clown:
This was really refreshing, totally different from the usual stuff. It doesn't take itself seriously, and that's exactly what makes this brilliant. Now that doesn't mean the show isn't serious at all; it's just a serious-ish show with wacky humour added, which somehow makes it perfect.
Really sad it got cancelled, but at least the writers gave us closure. It doesn't need a second season… I need a second season because I want more of this!
From episode 6 it got to dramatic for me. Other than that there is some good action in it.
Fantastic show, I keep recommending it to everyone so can't believe Netflix have cancelled it :slightly_frowning:
Loved everything about it. Will definitely be back for season 2.
I wanted to like this show. I tried to like this show. But after I finished each of the 1st 3 episodes, I was like "eh" and had no burning desire to continue to the next one. Ultimately, it's just not a well-written show. Bruce is "clueless innocent" who always gets in danger and then is always saved by some deus ex machina. Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is given a stereotypical Asian "tiger mom" character and ever her skills can't get past that. And then the writers drop in side plots that they promptly ignore. If you're going to make a big issue of Bruce needing to get money to pay for his college tuition (as they do), then you can't just suddenly forget that you made that an issue (as they also do).
Then again, Brad Falchuk is a co-creator of this show and, before this, he's best known for co-creating shows like Glee, American Horror Story, and Screen Queens with Ryan Murphy. I don't like any of those shows, so maybe Brad Falchuk's involvement here should have been a red flag for me from the start.
Season 1 Review
I thought the show would be more action-oriented, and while there is a lot of action and fight scenes, the main fighting star here is Justin Chien (Charles). Michelle Yeoh (Eileen) plays a lot more into the mother character in this show. Underneath the drama of infighting in the Triads is a well woven tale of Asian American family dynamics. You have two brothers who grew apart from each other and on the outside seem different - Charles is someone who is more emotionally detached and harsh while Sam Li (Bruce) is more goofy, kindhearted, and soft. Charles played his character very well, adding a lot of humor in his surprise and candid reaction to any of the dark murderous moments in the show. It cuts the tension in several serious scenes. Among the brothers, they both share the same values of loyalty and love towards their family. The parents both care for their family in their own way, with the mom sacrificing and working hard to raise her child to be successfuly and happy while the father raises his child harshly in order to have a dutiful sun.
Bruce's character could be very annoying sometimes with how naive he is. Because he doesn't have the life experience as his mom Eileen or his brother Charles, they would have conversations where he will try to talk them out of being involved in the Triads when walking away from that life isn't so simple. I think a takeaway from Bruce's character is that while he is naive, we want to believe in the good of things and we are able to see him pull off good deeds by using unorthodox methods (mahjong auntie rescue, getting involved with the boxer/police/triad meeting, finding a middle solution when it came down to whether he would kill his dad, etc.). Some of it relies on luck, but luck is also needed for other things too. Bruce does have a point about the importance of being able to walk away from that life, but when you're so entrenched in that system, it's hard to see any other perspectives so there's a disconnect in him being able to communicate with his family.
The biggest miss of Bruce in these situations is the reality of Eileen's character as she begins to take her fate in her own hands. We often don't get to look under the hood of female mother figures. When they are in the hotel room after the triad meeting, Eileen has the most heartfelt monologue that I feel could be relatable to so many mothers - when do they get to express what they want? Yes her children are important, but how can Bruce think that the best normal life she imagines is one when she is cooking, cleaning, and working hard all to help him succeed? When does she ever get asked what she wants in life and when does she get to be her own person? As Bruce has grown up in the show, we finally get to see Eileen take the opportunity to move on into a new chapter in her life as well. Although it was initially resisted, it is an accepted dream by her son. An interesting turn of events. Some people might see Charles and Bruce as foils, but Eileen also adds a foil to Charles as she was his influence growing up. He is able to be good because she works in the darkness (eg visiting her husband in the hospital and giving him insulin).
Plotwise I feel dumb for not seeing who the Boxer ringleader was when they made it so obvious. Also can't believe Alexis also backstabbed Charles. All the romantic interests were fake! Best girl is June (who I didn't realize also played May). She's a lovable bad bitch!
Surprisingly I felt that I could relate to both of the brothers. Although I am softer like Bruce, I identified strongly with Charles' sense of justice. And I guess sometimes I can be emotionless like him too. Anyways, the ending of the season wrapped up very well. I love Charles' baking hobby and that he got to explore it for a while before he made the choice to go back with his mom to Taiwan. I feel bad his heart got broken, but I think he could find someone better that doesn't have conflicting interests with his life. If there is a season two, it would be a great opportunity to give him a new love interest with a different romance dynamic now that he is growing into a different person. It would be really cool also because you would be able to see how he handles that relationship under the advice/influence of having a mother figure rather than a father figure.
One other thing is that even though Eileen wanted Charles to pick his own life and let him go, there is a mix of both identity in his own life and identity in his family. Freedom is very powerful. Charles is still invovled with the Triads, but now he gets to be more of his own person rather than just a foot soldier. That was most evident in how under his father's influence, he would be "bros" with the Wang bros but didn't really jive with their humor or behavior. He only tolerated it to fit in and although he would defend them, his heart still ultimately lay with the family that let him be who he never got to be with them.
RIP Blood boots. I wonder what side he would have stayed on if he stayed alive. Probably would have been like Xing and maybe still died anyway, but they had their moments and when Xing got her revenge, it was very satisfying (lowkey was funny the way Bruce just shouted and pointed at him to be targeted).
i loved it ! i wish to have another season it's so good
An intresting mix of great action, family drama and the Triads. Looks like there maybe a season 2 coming. Overall a good watch with slow episodes and fast action episodes. :thumbsup_tone1:
WOW!!! SAM!!!!!! from Smile Squad to this. AMAZING SHOW!! Congrats
Gotta love it, refreshing and yes some episodes could be shorter or need to speed up the pace. But hey there is a vibe that I kinda dig. And love Asian chicks :sunglasses:
The script is very predictable, acting and the few fighting scenes were good. It would have been better to have Bruce Sun played by Sam Song Li as gay, and TK as his BF.
Alice Hewkin (June/May) characters were amazing
Justin Chein (Charles Sun) gave a great performance
With all that I will not recommend it
It's really pretty good. I like to find the flaws in scripts, and this one really didn't have many. A couple points seemed a little far fetched, but the characters are likeable and fun. Really love Michelle Yeoh. She makes the series.
Like that it ends on a high note. Asian films, especially old style Hong Kong/ Taiwan stories about criminals, usually don't have "happy" endings. Usually expect the "Parasite" ending. Was really thrilled this wasn't one of them.
9/10. Fun. Family first message. And sometimes family is those you choose, not those that are given.
There is not enough diversity in this show as white and black people don’t get representation. Shame on Netflix for forcing diversity crap down our throats on American made shows but when it comes to the Chinese shit, they let it pass… so racist.

The bumbling idiot trope is very poorly done here.
