This show is SO corny if you are a football fan. You can tell it's made by and for people who don't follow the sport. Having said that, the characters are lovable, so they make it watchable.
I really did not expect much from this show at all. Damn good ending! See you on the pitch next season.
[7.6//10] A nice end to the season. I really admire the choice to have the team lose the big game to avoid relegation,, even when all they needed was a tie. It takes some boldness in a show full of such feel-goodery to end things on a bit of a down note, even as Ted, and the show, try to keep that downness in perspective.
The flow of the game is done well too. Roy takes being benched like a champ and gets a hero’s farewell after his dramatic play to stymie Jamie at a key point in the match. The team using the Lasso Special” to create chaos in the form of an American Football formation to score their leveler is great fun. And the fact that Jamie breaks the AFC Richmond faithful’s hearts, but does so by making the extra pass that Ted always coached him to do, is wonderful poetry. I expected the usual sports movie cliches in this, and they’re certainly present, but also delivered in sharp ways and led to an unexpected conclusion.
Beyond the climax of the episode, there’s just a lot of nice moments at play. Nate gets promoted to coach (before saying another sort of sexist thing, which isn’t great.) Keeley gives Roy a shoulder to cry on when he needs it most. Roy entrusts his teammate with the captaincy and gives him a vote of confidence. Rebecca calls Higgins by his first name and brings his entire family into the owner’s box. Everybody gets these little grace notes to their arcs and signs of growth, which is a really nice way to build an episode that is, by necessity, lighter on story and bigger on stakes.
I especially like what they do with Jamie. His unwillingness to believe that Ted is being genuinely supportive of him, only to realize that his former coach does really believe in him, is a wholesome thing. We see contrast of his shitheel father berating him for making the extra pass rather than being the star, and Ted sending him a note of support and an army man, despite the fact that he effectively delivered a dagger to the team’s fortunes.
There’s the usual dose of triteness here. I’ve never heard the “It’s the hope that kills you” idiom, so Ted trying to slay it with his usual “believe” philosophy comes off a bit like a strawman. And the “be a goldfish” and “be glad we get to be sad together” points are nice enough, but fairly shallow as post-loss wisdom goes. Still, like Ted himself, there’s an earnestness behind it all that puffs some of this up.
As does Rebecca bringing him back for another year. The irony of her succeeding in her mission to capsize the team only to resolve to work with her handpicked ruiner to build it back up again clicks into place nicely.
Overall, I enjoyed this season of television. It’s sort of a goofy sitcom version of Friday Night Lights that succeeds better than that description might portend. I’ll confess, given the raving praise for it, I expected it to knock my socks off, and instead it’s been a roundly pleasant but not overwhelming watch. And yet, I’ve been pleased with it almost the whole way through, which is an achievement I think Ted himself would be quite happy with. On to season 2!
I kind of assumed from the very beginning that this would result in relegation, so it opens up the avenue for a comeback story later on. But I'll admit that they had me there for a moment, and thought they had made it.
I'll echo what a lot of other people said in that it's kind of crazy how well this show works. It doesn't seem like it would on paper. But it does? It's oozing with heartwarming earnestness, and yet it doesn't feel cheap or overdone. It's remarkable how well it threads the needle.
Dammit this finale brought tears to my eyes not once but twice! What a beautiful surprise of a show.
P.s. I've got SUCH a crush on Roy
Can’t wait to see you in the championship
Loved how they didn't just make an expected ending that's smart and not just traditional
How does this show make me actually be sad about a sport I don't care about at all, and then make me crack up laughing with the last shot so much?
Thank god it's funny as hell cause the things Americans do to football in this show are freaking hard to watch.
I thought having no relegation in your sport was a joke... I guess not. That's so weird)
Hope season 2 won't dissapoint.
Enjoyed the whole series. Really grew on me. Not a fan of football at all but an excellent, ‘feel good’ series.
I absolutely love this show.
The Lasso Special at the end made me smile big time. I’m now wondering if something like that has ever been done and if it would work
Absolutely brilliant end to a great series
So it was good of course, but I can’t say it was great and that’s because this is literally a Club de Cuervos rip off! Down to the Lasso play, the “cold hearted” boss lady, the dumb but likeable assistant, the hot girlie that’s part of the club, the same archetypes of football players, the same issues with the ownership, like I don’t understand why they don’t give credit to it?
And I ended up loving all the characters and rooting for them, except from Ted Lasso, like I get his purpose but also I don’t get him, I like him but the show could also thrive without him and that’s not like the best thing to say of the lead character?
Don’t get me wrong I like the series, I like Ted, I love the rest of the cast and I’m gonna watch s2!
A bit predictable, but still a good episode, and looking forward to next season ... I mean series.
I am a football fan. Started watching this show having zero expectation. Gotta say It's worth it.
only just watched this episode last night and it's exactly the same as Leeds united season coming to an end and Jesse marsch etc :sob:
ahh it was sad but i loved it!!
Good ending, we will see season 2
This show is like the sports equivalent of Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon and I love every minute of it.
