Incredibly shitty potrayal of Mayan culture and religion. Just, thoughtless, harmful, and entirely unnecessary, They couldn't even be bothered to research an actual Mayan god, and the one they made up to be their "corn god" they named.... cacao. yknow, like, the word for cocoa beans? They could've gone with an actual Mayan deity of sports, or an actual Mayan deity of maize, both of which seem to exist, but no, who has time for research. On the other hand maybe it's better they didn't use an actual deity if all they had to say was that "torturing and killing everyone in sight" was the most important thing to the Mayas, along with maize. Y'know I feel like if we look at universal history that description could fit the Europeans pretty well.
The story itself is not Terrible but if they were going to make everything else up they could've just make up the culture as well and it would have been an all right episode. Every time they tried to do anything with a mythology that wasn't Christian they fucked it up, though, so maybe it's just beyond their capabilities.
