The first five years was a single arc, leaving plenty of time for stand-alone "monster of the week" episodes. With the seasons since, one season per arc, there left far less time for episodes that were only there to tell a single story. Many of us very much liked, and miss, the one-off episodes.

One of my biggest qualms about this show is its occasional lack of grandeur. For example, you’d think something as imposing as hell would be depicted as anything other than what appears to be my neighbor’s basement. And Crowley, the king of it all, sits on a throne that I could probably order online.

When such things are brought to such a basic level, it affects the stakes and the story — and how much we’re able to truly get seriously invested.

Hopefully we’ll get a bigger, and more epic, peek behind the biblical curtain as this story progresses.

What a cool episode! This brings back early SPN memories. I miss their short little monster hunts where we get the complete story in one episode and it wraps up and we move on to the next. Sure, they're "filler" episodes between the main plot but I love them so much. This episode was so satisfying, not to mention, it was just a really great horror story. It was tragic and dramatic and maybe a little bit predictable but that didn't take away from the enjoyment of it at all.

It's good to see the boys come back to ghost hunting, even though they're dealing with things that are so much bigger than that now.

Kill Rowena already. She is terrible, probably the worst character in this show, ever.

Not my favorite...but I think any episode with Rowena in it falls short of anything remotely good imho.

Despite what some people said in the previous episode comments, Supernatural has never been a monster of the week series. There was a central plot from day one. That arc finished in season 5 and after that we have like a central plot every season with filler episodes in between. Unfortunately, in this season (10) the fillers quality are terrible. This one was "ok" but still very predictable.

Despite what some people said, it is not one arc per season after season 5.
After the apocalypse, the angels fell (season 6) and with them, their relics, releasing also the leviathans (season 7) bringing havoc on earth I mean is the apocalypse. One of the relics is of course the god tablets (season 8) blocking all angels on earth and impeding them of returning to heaven, so the battle against Metraton ensues (season 9), making Dean get the Mark of Cain and making him get into that path we are now following (season 10). Each case makes Dean returns to his humanity and make peace with his destiny.

it is a big unique arch, is not "one separate plot per season"

Awesome! But next week's episodes looks like it's going to be epic, especially since we get to see Cas.
