It's that kind of show you still want to watch, after months of finishing it. Almost as good as sg1, despite the horrible ending. Though you know, sg1 ending wasn't really great either
@dunpealhunter They made the ending that way because there was supposed to be a direct to dvd movie made that would have further went through the story. I believe they were going to have to get Atlantis back to the pegasus galaxy or something like that. Unfortunately, MGM pulled all funding to the SG franchises, and here we are.
Definitely miss this, SG-1 and Universe. Although I love re-watching SG-1 and Atlantis the best.
I Grew up on Stargate with its witty humour and epic action. It is the best sci-fi franchise in all of my tv viewings. I only wish they completed the Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe franchise'. Definitely one to watch from begining to end!
pity it ended
After so many years we watched all the series again. Stargate Atlantis and Star Trek Voyager are the best AF series
Like many others, I feel that the worst part of this series is the final story arc; it's incomplete and S05E20 leaves far too many plot points unresolved.
Otherwise, it's very good. The filler episode count is low; that could be because there are fewer per season than some other franchises, so ideas are not spread thinly.
Whether or not you're a fan of SG-1, you should watch this.
This is quite overrated. The acting so so so bad.
They really screwed the pooch on this one when they dropped the team leader/main character Elizabeth Weir at the end of S03--when the problem, if there was one, was with the scripts. They tried to replace her with Samantha Carter in S04, and Robert Picardo's character (which they had to retcon/rehab) in S05. Neither one came close to being an improvement. Jason Momoa is fun to watch, playing the Teal'c spot on the away team.
Average season rating: 7.6
I can't help but think that Atlantis would have been better off if its continuation film(s) hadn't been canceled. That was a major advantage in SG-1's favor, beyond having double the episode count.
In some ways, though, it might have been the better decision not to continue. Atlantis never quite managed to capture the same feeling of adventure that SG-1 had in its heyday. It's telling that my favorite characters (except for Ronon) weren't even part of "the team" that went out on missions every week. There was actually a ton of potential for character dynamics that went undeveloped because we almost never got the kind of "home front" episodes that really showed who SG-1's members were outside of their jobs.
Atlantis also never developed the individual characters to the same degree as SG-1 had in the same amount of time—which, admittedly, is a reasonable prerequisite for developing dynamics between characters. Flat characters can't riff off each other nearly as well—and Atlantis is chock full of flat character archetypes:
They don't seem like real people, except for (maybe) Rodney. It's really hard to relate to them most of the time, which was not an issue I had with SG-1. (Anyone I've not listed above is because they were even more forgettable than these.)
In short, I can understand why the show's ratings declined enough that it got canceled. Still worth the ride, but probably not a rewatch.
Spin-off series with a lot of potential. but the series is filled with disappointing episodes that feel like rehashes of other shows and series and some of the fillers (especially in it's first year) stink. Too many episodes also rely on either a crew member getting kidnapped, getting a strange virus or being trapped with a big problem to solve (or all Three situations combined). The main villains were memorable as they could suck the life energy out of humanoids but their looks was terrible as they looked like old tired Goth rockers who had been travelling a little too long on the tour bus. It also didn't help that they became more and more humanized after the series went on. My biggest problem with the series though was David Hewlett who were terribly annoying throughout and Joe Flanagan who felt like a poor-man's Richard Dean Anderson or Kurt Russell. The season-enders and beginnings were usually the most interesting episodes to see as they were filled with action and great effects. The series were also not afraid of killing off favorite (and not so favorite) characters permanently. The series usually got some great new additions to the cast too for each season, with Jason Momoa, (the lovely) Jewel Staite and the addition of "Stargate SG-1" regulars was lovely. Sadly, the final episode was anti-climatic and the fate of the show has never truly been resolved. Enjoy it for what it is.
That Canadian 'Scottish' guy's accent is truly abysmal but it's obviously his USP as uses it in every show . . .
Very tight match between SG1 and Atlantis atleast for myself.. If you haven't seen this one yet i highly recommend you to check it out!
SGA is amazing but i will always like SG1 more than this because of the AsGards and Daniel Jackson
One episode in and had to give up. Didn't like the characters and didn't feel like the plot grabbed me. How do these scientists know so much about this chair or stargate? I didn't buy it.
Don't watch Season 5 episode 12. Worst episode of the series. Almost fell asleep from boredom
It's Stargate- no need to say anything more than that! The Ending was...... horrible, tho~.
I liked this show, but the ending left a lot of questions unanswered. Like what happened to the Wraith in the Pegasus Galaxy? I much rather saw an epic battle between Stargate Atlantis and the Wraith that once and for all ended their reign over the humans in the Pegasus Galaxy. The ending we got with one ship going after Earth seemed to me like a cheap knock-off from Star Trek Voyager.

the best stargate series IMO
