"decoding the encryptions"? Did you mean to say "inscriptions", Dr. Mora?

Sadly, the flimsy writing of the plot line lets down the character development on display. We can grasp what's going on between Odo and Mora, but the way events play out feels clumsy. The writers were going for a kind of horror story vibe, I suppose, when it came to the idea of a shape-shifting monster of sorts roaming the station. At the same time, even crucial moments like Mora's outburst in Security (and Odo's reaction) felt hollow, the characters' motivations somewhat unclear.

I don't really know what to do with this one. Developing characters' backgrounds is always welcome, but it somewhat cheapens the process if the stories that drive it don't hold up.

Lots of the details about Odo's backstory are given here, and the highlight of the episode is his relationship with Doctor Mora. Mora acts like something of an overprotective parent who doesn't really believe their child is capable of doing much without their help. Odo's clear frustration to this makes for a compelling and interesting dynamic between them, and culminates in some quite lovely moments as Mora expresses how proud he's become of Odo.

The story surrounding all this isn't quite as good, and the initial excitement of a shape shifting creature causing havoc on the station becomes a bit dull once more about what's going on is revealed. It's the character moments that let this shine, be they about Jake complaining about doing his homework or Julian chasing Jadzia's affections.

I don't like the monster story part of this story. But Odo's origin story and the relation between Dr. Mora and Odo is interesting. Mora is also fascinating cause it's difficult to like or to hate him. Odo doesn't seem to be quite sure about him either. I also like the away mission and the subsequent research. It's fascinating sci-fi (with lots of strange techno babbling). Even the search for the escaped life form is quite entertaining.

I don't need the horror part of the story. I hate horror movies. This makes it a 6/10 of what could otherwise have been a solid 7.
