Although I haven't read the books, this can get unwieldy at times from seemingly being a very faithful adaptation (the voiceover can get a bit intrusive). That nitpick asides though, the show is one of the very best of 2018, glorious on all levels in term of craft, world-building, and especially performances. To find two generation of actors who not only resemble each other so much to convince as the same people in different time periods, but who also give full, flesh-and-blood characterization to even small roles is quite an achievement. And of course, the four performers for the two girls are flawless in term of look and acting, syncing and evolving through time perfectly. Above all, it's the story of a beautifully complex, intimate female relationship given an epic scope, setting against period background of class differences and toxic patriarchy in a way that brings out the strong bond and subtle rivalry of their relationship all the more. Really can't wait for Season 2.
