Monarch: Legacy of Monsters 2023

after two episodes, the series feels very weak. The pace is slow and the acting bad.

I am watching the first episode, and while I am liking the story so far and the premise. The constant jumps in time are annoying. It's been an awful trend.
The fort episode has already jumped between times (1973, 2012. 2015 and 1959) in the first 12min

I’m not a monster movie expert but this is pretty good. The acting is decent, the pace is quick, the monsters and special effects are well done. Plus it’s a bit refreshing since there have not been that many monster movie series compared to zombies, super heroes, space operas etc Just finished the second episode and I’m eager to keep watching the next one when it comes out…

If you go in expecting there to be a lot of monster on monster action, then let me tell you this , it's a huge disappointment. In the 5 episodes that I have watched there is hardly 2-3 mins of monster action.

The acting is sub par , character development is weak. It's like a soap opera , where in every new episode they bring up a new topic.

Update (12/01/2024) : Just finished watching the finale. This show should've been called Monarch : Siblings with Daddy Issues.

The trailer was super misleading . And this was an utter disappointment. In the 10 episodes , there's probably only 10mins of monster action. This is a family drama , not a sci-fi series.

7 episodes in and I'm about to drop this. The story has become increasingly boring with a lot of sidetracking and bad dialogue. The 10 seconds of interesting sci-fi stuff is not saving this show. They're stretching it way too thin.

loading replies

Mediocre at best, a solid meh.

Started off alright, but now it’s just yawn.
The acting is particularly flat, borderline shocking in areas and the dialog is woeful.
I feel like I’m watching a handful of wood planks walk round aimlessly bumping into things for no particular reason talking about there eyeroll emotions.

And to top it off it’s just a drama fest concerned with mainly the female aspect, the male characters are just stand in’s or bait with exception of Russel, but he just seems to be a plot mechanic to drive the story along.

Too put it plainly, it’s not interesting, compelling or every remotely intellectual.

Essentially it’s just a big dull standard drama with a Godzilla skin. Typical Apple.

Couldn't stand it after the first couple of episodes. I think the show is very slow. The plot didn't feel interesting to me. Might be personal opinion but after watching 7 episodes, it didn't change. I'm out!

loading replies

I had to watch it until the end, hoping it would improve. Sadly it didn't.

loading replies

Not a bad show but too much family drama sometimes.

loading replies

Take my word this show is utter crap... Almost no time for Godzilla or any other monster and a story that seems to be written by a high school drop out... I love Kurt but even he can't save this junk show...

I was never excited for this show, I am not a monster-verse fan, I think most of their movies are mediocre.

But when I heard this is a tv show I was kinda intrigued, they had more room to try something new. This show has incredible potential considering the premise. It was a massive let down for me, and its pretty hard to disappoint someone who wasn't even excited for it in the first place.

Characters are shallow, the acting is cheesy and the main characters are too dramatic, for a monster show this feels more like a reality tv show, with all the unnecessary drama. Plot is way too basic, they had great potential to make this into a mystery show but failed terribly. The comedy is all over the place and flat-out cringe.

I don't feel like putting in much effort to write a more expanded review so I'm just gonna leave it here.

Was really looking forward to this, Giant monsters, Kurt Russel….what could go wrong.

Instead we get a tv melodrama reminiscent of low budget 90’s tv. Tedious and uninteresting, had to force myself to get through it. How did Kurt Russell agree to playing a humourless cuck in some kind of a love triangle.

This is the worst series I've seen in years. bad acting. bad character development (esp. May and Cate). too much flashbacks and sidetracks. too boring. bad writing. I regretted wasting time on this. 5/10.

I am surprised by the negative comments surrounding the show, I, for one, really enjoyed it and the finale was a fantastic ending. I am really hoping for a second season!

'Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters', is a show created in a very clever fashion, thanks to Matt Shakman, Matt Fraction and Chris Black, that combine the tensions of a family drama with a scientific adventure story, very closer to the classics from pulp literature.

Although there are characters that aren't valuable at all compared with the great plot of the story, this series allows us to understand how the MonsterVerse films are interconnected, giving an added status to creatures like Godzilla and Kong, in order to catch everything in a more compact way.

loading replies

if you enjoy wooden acting, terrible dialogue, and awful pacing then this show is for you. They even show a combined 2 minutes of monsters over the course of 10 episodes.

loading replies

I'm a big fan of the monsterverse, unlike my father, but we watched this series as a family and everyone loved it.

I don't know if we realize how lucky we are, we have the right to a weekly episode of a godzilla series with kurt russell? we don't deserve it but we devour it all the same.

the acting is very good, as is the story, I really liked the whole series and I don't think I have much more to say.

loading replies

Good action, cool twists, great cast, sometimes dumb, but sometimes surprisingly deep. I even cried a lil at the end. Much more fun than anticipated. Makes me even hyped a bit for the next movie.

loading replies

It's good, alright. Especially the vfx and sfx, they really focused on the senses, and that's just what a monsterverse series needs. Unlike the movies, I really liked the characters in this. It was well written, maybe even overly well written because the constant time jumps did get slightly confusing. The cast was brilliant. The acting was brilliant, but nothing stood out to me like the dialogue. It was smooth like poetry. One major critic would be the pacing, I felt like I was going in circles for the first few episodes up until around episode 5/6. I wish there was more monster stuff, but I get it. It's what they do, and I don't see it changing anytime soon. Finally, whoever casted Kurt Russell and his son as the same person needs a raise. I always think to myself why they don't ever cast real life relations, and finally, they have, and it worked perfectly.

just finished watching all episodes. i know theres alot of hate aimed at this series. i saw one comment about lesbians in episode 5. but believe me ts no where near as the woke shite being pushed out today. the series on whole was fast paced and enough of everything to be entertaining. lately i've found it hard to rate anything above 5 and thats being generous but this is a 9 compared. give it a chance and you will enjoy and look forward to season 2.
I will say this to the Gen Zs If you want to be entertained without all the WOKE shite being pushed. watch some of the old shows like X-Files, Quantum Leap, Twin Peaks to name but a few. just look for anything pre 2000. you'll not regret it

loading replies

The acting was so laughably bad in ep 9. Ugh.

loading replies

Such a shame, it had great potential.

Then it just devolved to what you'd expect from Apple + which requires lots of box ticking

loading replies

Why does May have a constant RBF? Don’t think she cared like that in the past stuff she’s acted in.

loading replies

This was really bad and cringe to watch

loading replies

I kinda enjoy the show, but my issue is that the monsters only get a few minutes of screen time. I don't want to see the budding, weird love triangle between brother & sister & May (Cora). I want to see Godzilla and the rest of the monsters. I am still watching though.

loading replies

A good premise let down by awful character development and dialogue. This monster show revolves too much around family drama.

AppleTV+ is killing the sci fi game right now. Loved the first two episodes.

[tv+] Connecting to the MonsterVerse from the events of "Godzilla" (2014), the story unfolds around the creation of Monarch in the 1950s, while currently establishing a generational plot. This double narration allows interesting parallels between the two stories. It may not be exactly the monsters show that many might be expecting, but by assuming its own limitations the series sets up a striking reflection on what life could be like for the tiny human living in a world threatened by gigantic monsters.

The safe scene made me turn it off and never watch any apple produced series ever again.

Caaaaaaaaaan’t wait for this one!

A somewhat tiresome teen drama with sulky, scowling, temperamental and selfish kids CONSTANTLY arguing with each other or gazing into the distance in search of their inner selves after said arguments (Kentaro Randa being by far THE most annoying), oh and yes, for 3 minutes or so, every 2-3 episodes we get the appearance of a CGI monster or flashbacks to the Godzilla movie just to tie us back in to what the whole story is SUPPOSED to be about. It has its moments but overall there's way too little advancement of the story for the amount of time you need to sink into watching the pulp. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be a high point but the appearance of Dominique "Naomi Nagata" Tipper in E7 made me shudder with more of a feeling of "Oh jeez, not her again". The story is pretty dull, the script pretty poor and the acting mostly so-so to second rate. From what I've seen of her though I do like Anna Sawai. I'll likely persevere to the end but doubt I'll be back for a second season, assuming there will be one.

The only thing right, that i liked were the VFX. They were batter than the films, no kidding.

SPOILER ALERT
SPOILER ALERT
There's something I dont understand. If the grandmother was in the other world locked up, how could the son and the grandson born if there was no mother to bring them to live? Does that make sense? I were they born with no mother to bring them when she was not even in that life?

loading replies

This could have been great...

loading replies

Even though most of the characters were annoying I liked this show, I think i might be in love with Godzilla:grin: . I love kong and skull island too but I am not enjoying the idea kong and big G are being in same universe, idk why

loading replies

For context, I'm only on Episode 6, but some things are obvious at this point.

The concept is great and could have very long lasting appeal if properly executed.
The general story and focus on multiple timelines is interesting and compelling.
The visual production value and special effects are top notch. The adult actors are very good. The diversity of monsters and inclusion of other mysteries is fantastic.

That said, the younger actors are very poorly scripted. I hesitate to blame the actors who might be capable of much more relatable work, but the end product is unlikeable brats. They have been written as immature, entitled, unsocialized babies. They are intended to be tough and independent, but come across as immature and emotionally fragile. They are unrelatable by average folks who show respect in interactions with others and bite their tongue in tight situations while considering all their options.

Hopefully the production company will do some reasonable review and editing of the writing for the 3 younger characters and fire the guy in his mom's basement to is currently writing these three.

Just start at the 30 minute mark of the last episode, that's when the only kaiju fight in the whole series starts.

Incredible so far after 4 episodes! It's everything I liked about Godzilla: King of Monsters, but with even more of a "Jurassic Park" stress-inducing edge-sitting feel. I wish it continues like this.

Monarch Legacy of Monsters - :heart:x7

I watched the first 5 episodes last night and was sadly disappointed in the show. It felt slow and just boring.
However, the last 5 episodes that I watched tonight were much better. The show really picked up some steam and became much more interesting. The entire concept is a really cool idea, and ultimately executed well. At this point, I'm ready for season 2.

How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!

This show/season took a while to get into gear but I honestly didnt hate it. Did not go into it expecting anything mindblowing or groundbreaking anyway so it was fine in the end? The last few episodes were pretty good actually and I mostly watched it for Anna Sawai anyway... and for that it was pretty good. ;)

loading replies

Overall, just OK as the story pace is slow and convoluted. I love the Kurt/Wyatt Russell casting!!! However, I do not like Anna Sawai as she seems to have just one "look" - frown/P.O'd look. She just doesn't seem to have range. She makes Ren Watane look like a good actor!!! I fast forward through her scenes (siimiar to how I just fast forwared Lori Grimes' scenes in TWD).

loading replies

With all them flashbacks how's the season 1 summary going to look like at the start of season 2?

loading replies

I gave this series a chance. I watched until episode 7. By now, it should be clear to all viewers that this was likely a thrown out project that may have started as a sequel to Godzilla 2014, but clearly developed into a CW teen drama. The title should be May: Legacy of the Randa love triangle aka next to nothing to do with Godzilla or monsters.

loading replies

just seen the first episode it looks promising

loading replies

just only seen the first episode and it looks promising

loading replies

Damn how short is Cate? She’s cute though.

loading replies

The underlying idea is interesting, very promising if developed in the right way. Unfortunately so far the acting performance is a bit weak, even by Kurt Russell, and the narrative solutions are quite banal. Let's hope it gets better with the next episodes.

loading replies

Pretty visuals, but mediocre writing. Feels really slow and bloated, with mostly nothing going on. There were moments when I thought this was written by AI. I hope the story picks up, but that will not help the horrible characters. As in most shows, the characters that should be the smartest behave like total idiots, and that repeatedly. Suspension of disbelief is not enough to take this seriously when there is no effort shown.
