Dull and boring; some scenes seemed to drag on at times. Silly dialogue. Too much disbelief when it came to what they would be fighting when alien lizards literally invaded New York 5 years ago. Everyone knows this happened and yet, even given all of their superpowers, the Hand is just too much to believe in which means it takes them at least 3 episodes to band together. A waste of Sigourney Weaver by making her the most boring villain imaginable and making Elektra (who is also extremely boring) the main villain at the end just so they could have this contrived "I'll fight you to save you" bullshit battle between her and Daredevil. Gross.
I will say seeing Danny Rand and Luke Cage fighting together in live action was great to witness. I will give the show that.
This was an amazing season and did not disappoint in the least. The writers did a phenomenal job of overlaying the individual story-lines and combining them into one believable mash-up without sacrificing their core beliefs just to get them all together in one room. It was also great to get to know The Hand a bit better and witness their internal struggles. (Now to learn more about The Chaste after all the nuggets of information dropped within...But I digress.)
As with each individual series, this one starts slow introducing the basic plot lines and converging them through solid exposition, and gradually increases in momentum until it's climax, ending with a neat and tidy wrap-up that will leave viewers wanting more. A lot more.
The devil of Hell's Kitchen
The smartass detective
The righteous ex-con
The kid with the glowing hands
Seeing four characters in one show where each one of them giving us the hype of belonging there and having their own world, yet when their four worlds start colliding into each other they maintaine their individuality amongst the team, and behaving as one when they knew that they now have each other's back.
The show served the introduction of the team gathering pretty well. Haven't got any room for unnecessary hours of watching, so when you watch I guarantee that you will watch an Eight Episodes packed with only useful plot points. The colors OMG. I am sure that you will notice them real quick.
I loved the Show. They couldn't have done it better than this.
First of all, I want to point out that I think that the Marvel/Netflix have been very inconsistent in terms of quality thus far.
The Daredevil series has been great (although I will admit that I wasn't the biggest fan of season 1), Jessica Jones was quite good, Luke Cage was a mixed bag due to the second story arc, and Iron Fist, well, enough has been said about that show.
I knew beforehand that this series was going to be produced by the guys who did Daredevil season 2 (my favourite season out of all the Marvel/Netflix shows), so naturally, I was quite excited going in.
Unfortunately, I found this show to be a mixed bag.
The team dynamic works quite well, and the dialogue they have (episode 4 shines in this regard) was well handled (Jessica Jones has some wonderful zingers). Krysten Ritter shines again in her role, closely followed by Charlie Cox and Mike Colter. Moreover, it was really fun to see that they also brought most of the supporting cast back, and they found a good way to balance them and the main characters. For instance, Cox has a smaller presence in the first few episodes, but the show makes up for it by giving him a bigger part in the second half of the show. I also liked that the makers didn't take the easy route of Claire calling her superpowered buddies in order to unite the characters, but instead they found another organic way of doing it. The story itself was serviceable, but quite generic when you really start to break it down (Whedon's first Avengers film operates in a similar regard).
During the previous paragraph, you might've noticed that I conveniently left out Finn Jones when I was praising the actors. I've already discussed him at length during my Iron Fist review, and even though I feel like he improved as a character with this show, the actor has little presence on the screen. Surprisingly, another performance that I wasn't a big fan of was that of Sigourney Weaver. I don't quite know if it was her bland character, or Weaver just phoning it in. The former is more likely, as I found that the entire 'Hand' part of the show to be very weak and difficult to care about, as it was so vaguely defined as an organization ('wanting power everywhere' is just not relatable, unless you truly care about the illuminati). The final important character in this show is Elektra. She is a bit of a difficult case. I thought she was very fun during the second season of Daredevil, but here she is kinda turned into a Winter Soldier-esque character that doesn't get much to do besides being an evil henchman most of the time. Elodie Yung still does a very good job as the character nevertheless.
Finally, some of the problems that have plagued all of the shows are also very prominent in this show. The pacing has been improved thanks to the length of the show (it's only 8 episodes), but scenes are still too drawn out and some episodes just feel long. Furthermore, it feels like the stunt team from Iron Fist has been transferred for this show; meaning that occasionally the stunt work is quite good, but most of the time, the makers are trying to mask poor stunt work with quick edits. And oh yeah, some of the CGI in the final episode is laughable (you'll know it when you see it). All of these problems can be fixed, if Marvel/Netflix would just spend more money on these shows, which could also help with upping the production values. That's something Jeff Loeb should be thinking about.
5/10
P.s.: The Punisher show looks great!
So both Jessica Jones and Deadpool have the cure for blindness, interesting...
After successful first seasons of their Marvel series, Netflix brings them together for The Defenders, an action-packed superhero team-up. When Danny Rand (aka Iron Fist) tracks a secret criminal organization called the Hand to New York he teams-up with Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Daredevil; who have all had encounters with the Hand and want to protect the city from their nefarious schemes. While it tends to focus more on Iron Fist and Daredevil, it does an impressive job at bringing in and using various characters from all four series. And, the fight scenes are incredibly exciting and intense. The performances are also pretty good; even Krysten Ritter (who’s poisonous on Jessica Jones). Plus, Sigourney Weaver makes for an interesting and compelling villain as the leader of the Hand. One of Marvel’s best series to-date, The Defenders shows once again what a rich and captivating cinematic universe Marvel has created.
While the individual episodes were fairly good. The season as a whole went nowhere and had very little content. I much prefer the individual hero format for the Netflix/Marvel shows and would be happy if this was the first and last team-up series we see.
The real problem I see, is the obvious downward slide in the Netflix/Marvel seasons. Every new series is noticeably worse than the previous one (with Jessica Jones being the exception, as it was on par with the first).
That moment when in literally every interview and every panel and every article the praise for Sigourney Weaver from the cast and crew is endless. Then the season airs and I'm like ????????. She was described as villain at times and as a complex character at others, but honestly, she was neither. From start to finish her character was on the same bland and uninteresting rhythm. In general, I think the season needed smarter and less repetitive scripts and better directing. But it was still entertaining with really cool scenes here and there and a rewarding end.
It's cool to see that each character has its own color and that every scene that they're in is tainted in that color. This gets funny or rather colorful when they're all together in the Royal Dragon in episode 4.
